If the Referees are not going to call it..why have the penalty? Why have the 30sec clock? If they are just going to ignore it BLATANTLY..I mean..running plays a good 2-3 secs after the clock expires..why have it in the Books? How do they decide when to call it? Ignore it at certain times and call it at others? Twice in the Miami-Baltimore game there were BLATANT plays run AFTER the clock expired on BOTH sides..not even close. Same in the game today with Baltimore-Tenn. Just let the Teams stay at the line of scrimmage all day...who cares? I am being sarcastic but its down right scary how badly they just blow this call week in and out.
After the clock hits 0 there is always a bit of time before the refs call the flag. With that being said it should have been called against the ravens.
The clock shown on TV and at the stadium is not the official clock. The refs use a stop watch, if I'm not mistaken.
I don't believe that for a second (no pun intended). When is the last time you saw a clock tick down to zero at a half and the ref announce without checking replay that there is still time on the clock. And I an not talking about those situations in which the game clock operator "forgot" to stop the clock, I am just refering to the everyday garden variety when it looks to the fan that it is zero on the game clock, but the "clock on the field" shows something different. I watch a ton of NFL games and have never seen anything but the TV and game clock being the official clock given there isn't a known problem with the game clock.
well, if they're going to start making changes, i assure you that this isn't the place to start. There are much worse calls being made that change the games far more.
While I totally agree with there are more important changes to be made..this one is so easy to get right..it scares me that they get it wrong so often.
Week 1 the Jets blatantly got away with a delay of game penalty at a pivotal moment in the game against us. I thought it was just because Brett Favre was the quarterback.
Did you just see the last Delay penalty on the Panthers. It hit 0 and they were right on it..but then how do you miss the ones where several secs go bu the zero???
Because the clock you see is not official. Also if I'm not mistaken there is actually another second allowed after it hits zero. The ref checks the ball + his clock in that second and then throws the flag.
I missed both games tonight. I agree that they let it slide a bit too much...a few times this year there were 2-3 seconds after it hit zero with no call. Those are obvious, the official clock and the clock we see can't be THAT out of sync.
yea u hit it head on.. during the ravens game the announcers explained the "league rule" and they said that the refs have their own "play clock" and it usually runs a second delay compared to tv playclock
I've seen it happen numerous times this year when the QB takes the snap well after the clock hits :00, it has to get fixed. Easy fix: Make the in stadium clock the OFFICIAL clock. Have one of the officials solely responsible for it or hire an official who's only job pre-snap is to watch that damn clock. As SOON as the clock hits :00 he blows a horn or a whistle or something and the play stops. No arguement no debate. The NFL is a billion dollar industry but the integrity of the sport is being compromised by this. Hiring another official would cost nothing and it would fix the issue permanently.
You are correct. Until they explained it today I thought they always screwed that up too.They said something about turning their head first, THEN look at the ball. If it isn'tsnapped then they throw the flag. Hence, the appearance of a delay. BUT, they do it the same for EVERY team. HH

My question is, why complain about something now that has pretty much been the same all along. Granted it seemed a bit excessive this time but we see it constantly, the clock hits 0 and the snap comes a bit later. It was said on one of the games last week that the ref has to look at the clock and then look back to see if the ball was snapped or not. Seems to me the problem is with the ref's position. It seems pretty simple for him to be in such a position to watch the clock while able to see the snap peripherally or any other early movement. Even so, even if the flag was thrown, they complete the same plays, whatever, Stover hits it from 48 instead of 43. Kick was plenty long and stright even to clear from 5 more yds. bottom line is that the ravens D shut them down and Joe Cool made the plays he needed to in order to win.
I don't think its a big deal of a penalty... What cost the Titans the game were the TO's... and the poor coverage on D...not the "Non-Call"... The Raven won the game, they made the plays that counted...the Titans had the mistakes that hurt them... Case in point... on the last Raven FG drive, after getting the Ravens to a 1st and 15 to go (at the 50), the Titans commit another penalty "Offsides I believe," and gave them their 5 yards back... Those 5 yards seemed to be the difference in the FG...again the Titans mistakes... Kudos to the Ravens... I see them going all the way to the SB... I feel better to have been losing to this team twice this year, at least we lost to a team going to the Conference Championship game this year...
I am in no way saying that the outcomes of these games hinged on Delay of game penalties. It just seems that there has to be a better way to get it right..or at least stop showing the clock at home. It just gives an idea that someone is screwing up badly.
I don't see why they just don't have an NBA-esque 24 second shotclock buzzer and big red light. Surely you'd get the calls right then.
Of all the minor things the refs don't get right, delay of game is the least of my worries. The offense is not given an advantage by snapping the ball 1 or 2 seconds after the play clock seems to expire. I'm fine if the NFL wants to institute a buzzer in order to eliminate human error. Which would make more sense than making those plays reviewable.
Yea, when the play clock expires, we could have the goal posts flash neon yellow and fireworks shooting out of the top of the pips. We could have bells and whistles going off and, and, and who really cares. The officials will give the offense a sec or two. If people want perfection then get rid of the players and get rid of the officials and we can program robots to play and referee these games. We should be more worried about players missing tackles, blowing blocks, running wrong routes, QB's overthrowing a receiver and so forth.
Right, if the DOG is that darned important, then just rig up a buzzer in the ref's ear that goes buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz when the clock ticks 0.!!
