Padres close to an answer on Peavy

LAS VEGAS — One day after voicing his most optimistic report to date about trading Jake Peavy to the Cubs, Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said he should know today whether the much-discussed terms are finally set.
The Cubs were to reply to Towers last night and again today, when the winter meetings will end.
Towers said his talks with Cubs GM Jim Hendry yesterday were the lengthiest of a process that began several weeks ago.

With the CC Sabathia sweepstakes over, I'm surprised we are taking an offer now, we probably could get more and better prospects if we waited.

BTW FFiC, any word about Mark Prior?

Mark Prior is a free agent now. There maybe some loyalty there since the Padres paid him last year for what was an injury year.

Sounds like the Peavy deal to the Cubbies is dead.

Padres have work to do after Meetings | padres.com: News

Towers expects to be busy between now and the Christmas holiday looking to fill needs, though he expects to find a few bargains after the first of the year. But if the team opts to retain Peavy and his $11 million salary for 2009, there won't be much money to spend on free agents.
The Padres are looking at a payroll of $40 million and have already committed $9 million to right fielder Brian Giles. Add in Peavy's $11 million and there's not a lot of money to spend.

Rule 5 activity: The Padres selected two players in the Major League phase -- Cabrera from the Rockies and Nova of the Yankees. The Padres like Cabrera's defense and speed. They needed middle-infield depth after trading Khalil Greene to the Cardinals last week.

Sandy Alderson is pretty much ruining the Padres, add in more pitching and no hitting and -0- speed...oh boy...another long season FFiC...

Former D'backs executive Moorad near deal to buy Padres from Moores

    Tom Krasovic (Contact)
    Originally published 03:43 p.m., January 2, 2009, updated 10:50 p.m., January 2, 2009

Fifteen years after Texan software mogul John Moores bought the Padres, Moores and his wife Becky have reached “an agreement in principle” to sell the club to a group led by Jeff Moorad, an Orange County resident with wide-ranging experiences in the baseball business.
Moorad was the general partner of the rival Arizona Diamondbacks the past 4 1/2 years and for 20 years prior was a powerful agent to baseball stars such as Manny Ramirez and Mo Vaughn.
If the sale of the Padres goes through, the price will exceed $400 million, according to a major-league source. Moores put up about $80 million to buy the Padres in December 1994.
“It's a jewel of a franchise,” Moorad said.

Any rumors/news on the Peavy front? I'd have thought with Burnett and Sabathia off the market, interest would increase in him and Sheets.

Brother they thought the Cubbies were still in it, but now that Bradley got that deal I don't think they have room. They were saying that Peavy deal wouldn't heat up again until the end of this month beginning of February if they do again.

We weren't really an old team before, now...looks like we start the cycle all over again..trade the guys heading into their primes for young prospects, try and pick up some cheapy FA's, and see what happens.

    Thoughts on Shawn Estes?

A lefthander, who can throw strikes, no matter how softly, can stick in the major leagues for a very long time.

There is something about Lefty's that allows them to stick in MLB for insane periods of time, no matter how poorly they pitch.

If Moorad in, CEO likely to leave

Major league executives expect CEO Sandy Alderson to leave the Padres at some point this year if Jeff Moorad takes over the front office.
Moorad has said he well regards Alderson, but major league executives doubt Alderson will stay beyond 2009 if Moorad comes aboard because the two are used to doing similar jobs.
As general partner of the Diamondbacks, Moorad reportedly was active in negotiations for prominent players such as Eric Byrnes and Russ Ortiz, and his duties were comparable to Alderson's present duties.

This would be the best news for this organization. Sandy has no clue what he is doing any more.

    Padres plan a gradual transition

It is unclear how much operating capital the Padres will have if the sale goes through. The sale price will exceed $400 million, perhaps by a large margin. Moores has ordered the payroll slashed to $40 million for the 2009 season, barely more than half of last year's Opening Day payroll of about $73 million. As of now, the Padres are about $5 million over budget for the 40-man roster, having committed $31.2 million to eight players.

Who do they expect to go watch this overgrown minor league team play baseball?

And boy, did Moore pull a fast one on the people of San Diego, a brand new ballpark with the promise of competing has now slid back to the mid 90's padres...without the Kevin Browns or Trevor Hoffman's of the world.

    Per Rotoworld:

The Padres have reportedly re-signed Mark Prior and added Chris Burke on a minor league deal.
Prior never contributed after signing a one-year deal with the Padres a year ago. He'll attempt to make it back from another shoulder surgery this season. Burke picked a good situation, as the Padres have terrible middle-infield options at the moment. Still, he was awful last year for the Diamondbacks.

Sandy Alderson just doesn't get it. Yes we are in a recession, but families will come if you put a good product on the field.

    http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/jan/16/padres-tickets-below-two-million/?padres

Team could draw fewer than 2 million because of low season ticket sales

Sharp declines in Padres season ticket sales could result in home attendance dropping below 2 million for the first time since the 1994 season was cut short by a labor dispute.
Season ticket sales were at about 15,000 entering the 2008 season. Now they are well below 10,000, creating the potential plummet in attendance.
Club CEO Sandy Alderson cited several factors, foremost a national recession that he said is depressing several clubs' sales.

Being a Padres fan right now has moved me past recession and into depression.

I think there is some Ivory Tower thinking going on right now, they just dumped pretty much every high salary player they could, with more cuts to come, and now it is a mystery why Season Ticket sales for an overgrown minor league team are down?

    Bell files for arbitration

Padres reliever to assume Hoffman's role in 2009

Bell, who will be the closer for the Padres this season after Trevor Hoffman signed a one-year deal with the Brewers this week, made $420,000 last season.

This is how very sad our organization has become. This should have never come down to this at all.

    Wow...:pity:

FFiC, if you are left handed, and can throw strikes, you should go tryout for the Padres, this is shaping up to be one ugly season for us.

No closer, no speed, no depth, and little power with Rookies mostly playing.
