Goose Gossage, from my hometown of Colorado Springs, made the Hall of Fame today. I have met him a few times at his kid's baseball games and also at a volleyball match. He is a big guy but always has the time to talk to other people. It's nice he finally got in. :ffic:

It took nine tries, but Goose Gossage finally made it into the Hall of Fame.
The former Yankee closer, who notched 310 saves during a 22-year career, became only the fifth relief pitcher to be voted into Cooperstown by the Baseball Writers' Associated of America.
Gossage is now part of a Hall of Fame bullpen that includes Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley and Bruce Suttor.
Gossage, who played for the Yankees from 1978-83 and in 1989, was the kind of closer that doesn't exist anymore in Major League Baseball. He routinely worked two innings or more to save a game.
Ace relievers, including the Yanks' Mariano Rivera, now rarely work more than an inning, relying on set-up pitchers to get the team into the ninth inning.
"Now it takes three guys to do kind of what I used to do," Gossage said before the vote.
Gossage, 56, lives in Colorado Springs, Col. When Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn were elected last year, Gossage was third with 388 votes (71.2%) — 21 votes shy of the 75% needed for election.

I think Jim Rice rubbed some of the media the wrong way in his day and that is why he is not in. Blyleven should be in as well. Andre Dawson had some really good years in Montreal and with the Cubs. I hope I can visit Cooperstown some day.

Still can't believe Rice, Dawson and Jack Morris have been waiting so long.

The one that amazes me is Big Mac (Mark McGwire 128 23.6%) he duplicates his exact # of votes this year as last year.....a statistical improbability for real.

I'm on the fence with Rice, his home/road splits as well as his early retirement hurt him. Dawson isn't in because he spent a lot of years in Canada and his career OBP is a pathetic .332.

Morris doesn't deserve to go into the Hall of Fame. The guy is living off of Game 7 of the 1991 WS, which was a great game but if you take that away he has a career ERA of above 4 in the post season and really the only arguement the guy has to get in is because of his post season stats. If Morris got in he'd also have the highest ERA of any pitcher already in the Hall.

I didn't know that last part.

Dawson and Canada just kills me. Like Tim Ranies. I started a separate thread because I was hoping to keep this about Goose.

Agreed about Raines. I'll post my comments about him in the other thread so we don't hijack this one.
