    Amen Marty!

He could have done everything identical to what he did and left his helmet on until he hit the sideline as well.

    See comment above.

What if is a big term but what if there had been a flag down in the secondary?

Bottom line to all of this is doing anything you know is going to cause a penalty regardless of the game situation if flat *** stupid, unnecessary and makes me scream.

Besides doesn't him knowing the game situation and doing it anyway speak volumes to how much of a loose cannon he can be?

I love his intensity and fire but if you want that young team to stay disciplined and focused you can't have one of the team leaders drawing a 15 yard penalty that could be avoided by keeping that f'in chinstrap buckled until he hit the sideline.

    Stupidity is contagious.

I dont mind any action on the football field that:

    A) Is one out of pure, geuine emotion

    or

    B) Has no affect on the outcome of the game

I admit I thought about the Dwayne Rudd Cleveland game for a second, but I agree with a poster who said this is Old School vs. New School. With the exception of a few posters, there seems to be an age divide in the opinions on this matter.

Well, HardKore, you more then likely do not recall Bryan Cox's time in Miami, he was having a season similar to JP's, just racking up sacks and acting crazy and "us" fans cheered and "right on'ed" but the problem was, he just couldn't stop...each week or tough situation and out came a Cox outburst.

Eventually it became bad enough that he was sent packing, he was a heck of a productive LB, but the other stuff just was not acceptable, like TO in Philly..

I'd prefer it if Joey not go through the same thing.

Sorry, my fault, you know I just can't avoid a good "no fun league -vs- dumb showboater" argument

This thread wasn't nearly as interesting when I thought it was all about an injury that I've not heard anything else about.

I agree it was a stupid illadvised penalty that could have been worse.
I disagree he is trying to showboat to upstage the other players. His play on the field upstages most of the other players and he is having a career year so he doesn't have to upstage anybody.
I don't agree with his actions but I can kind of understand how his emotions can get the best of him at times. We all went through last season as fans of a 1-15 football team that we were all upset about and embarrased by. Can you just imagine this same senario from a very intense players pespective? How many of us did things as a result of our teams play last season that were illadvised because of our anger and frustraitions. I know this is no excuse for his actions but at some point you have a tendacy to let out those pent up emotions once you realize this is not the same team and has finally turned the corner to respectability. I am sure he knows he did wrong and his coach(s) reminded him of it. Do I wish he gets fined for it, no, because he is a Miami Dolphin for one thing, and he is an intense player who is on the verge of breaking some sack records and may be representing our team in the ProBowl.
I almost believe this thread deserves a 15 yard penalty for unsportsman like conduct for piling on after the whistle but thats JMO.

    pretty ignorant rebuttle IMHO...

So, you agree with some KNOWINGLY breaking the rules for whatever reason they see fit in any situation they see fit?

Yes, he has made plays on third downs before and has never acted in this way, obviously his emotions were flaring more than he could handle and more than any of those 3rd down plays, but regardless of its a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th down play, it is blatantly against NFL rules to throw off your helmet at ANY point during the game, aside from injury, for whatever reason. This has been a rule long before Goddell even got into the office. To adhere to and agree with blatant rule breaking shows a vast amount of ignorance on your part that is indescribable...

"Im pretty sure he knew taking off his helmet was a penalty"... [condoning Porters actions] with this statement goes along the lines of stupidity with that of Jason Cole's (or Greg Cote-dont remember which one) story about how Ted Ginn should call out Wayne and purposefully hold out before the OTA's even began after we drafted him... Completely idiotic.. And the fact that some here are trying to condone blatant rule breaking need to step back and look at why rules are set in place...

Perhaps we should all go out, get totally wasted, and drive home... If we make it home alive without killing anyone, then no harm, no foul... right!?

I think if they had called the delay of game penalty, they still would have penalized Porter for removing his helmet. I think the delay penalty would only have cancelled any penalty committed during the play.

    EXACTLY RIGHT.
There could've been a D-penalty flag thrown on the opposite side of the field from Joey, and it would've mattered.

Just like the drunk driver who says: Well, it's OK, I didn't hurt anyone...this time.

Porter taking his helmet off was a stupid thing to do. I'm sure the coaches and possibly a few players told him so. I'm sure he was thinking "I sack this guy and it's over" but a smarter player would realize that isn't necessarily true. He couldn't know for certain whether or not there was a defensive penalty. If there had been then SF would have been that much closer for a hail mary shot. It's not necessarily likely. He could get away with ripping his helmet off in the same situation and have no consequences probably 90% of the time but that other 10% he's going to look like an idiot. And then the same people who are defending him now would be ripping onto him.

How could you even take a chance of costing your defense 15 yards when it could end up costing the game? It's totally irresponsible and reckless. I dont care what reason you have, if there is even a slight possibility that it can change a W to a L then it's not worth it. He didn't even look to see if there was a penalty on the ground before he did it, he just bursted out without thinking and this is the problem. If he took a second to look around before celebrating, then I wouldn't have minded it at all... but he didn't.

I didn't mind too much because when I saw him do it, saw the field empty of flags I said to myself, "Phew, how stupid, but how COOL IS THAT! We win!!"

I enjoyed it, showed some emotion, but please look around and make sure you're not royally screwwing up our chances of getting into the playoffs after working so hard just to get into them.

I remember seeing Jack Lambert swing his helmet and flinging it about 50 yards towards the end of one of the Steeler games in the mid-70's. I think the Commish needs to get rid of a lot of stupid rules/penalties that ruin what is a great game:

    1. Tuck Rule: It caused more problems by changing the rule....if it comes out of the QB's hand and it is not a pass then it is a fumble end of story. You know what is and what isn't a pass and so do the refs.

    2. Breaking the plane of the goal line: Another dumb rule. Simplify it by saying it is not where the ball is at but where your feet are at or where you forward moment is stopped.

    3. Let guys use stickum and do away with the dress code as long as the guy has on the proper jersey, pants, cleats, pads, etc. You can't even wear a skull cap under your helmet unless it is the proper color and fits within the guidelines.

    4. Do away with the excess celebrations call. That's what makes it fun to watch.

    5. There are way too many roughing the QB calls. It's football...it's not soccer or tennis. If the QB gets slammed down that's the way it goes. I would not allow helmet to helmet hits or spearing.

Feel free to add your own rules you hate.

Set aside whether the helmet removal rule is stupid or not. That is irrelevant to the discussion. It's a rule on the books.

That established, the only two penalties that AREN'T stupid are:
    1) a defensive hold committed when a DB knows he is beaten; and
    2) an offensive hold committed when an OL knows he is beaten.

In the first situation, it's better to lose five yards and the first down than the sure touchdown. In the second, it's forgiveable to protect the quarterback (and, perhaps, possession of the ball) and sacrifice the yardage.

EVERY OTHER PENALTY IS AN UNACCEPTABLE MENTAL LAPSE. It is irrelevant whether "it matters" or not. What has kept this team in the playoff hunt is its discipline. It's not talent, because we lack that in comparison to our playoff rivals. And any lapse in discipline can promote further lapses. I'm all about enjoying the game. But you play the game to win it.

See how I segued nicely to KC?

You can't compare the class of a Johnny U with the mouth of Peezy. Two different approaches to the game. So long as Peezy can play at the level he's playing at now, the antics are fun to watch. The difference will come at the end, when Peezy can no longer take care of business and has to either shut up or be despised, while Johnny U was, and still is, universally admired.

Porter could very easily have cost the game with that STUPID move. There should have been a delay of game penalty called on San Fran. W/ the crowd noise as loud as it was, he doesn't hear that whistle and thinks the games over... Think he'd a learned after the New England game is what bothers me, Emotion is a wonderful thing but being able to control that emotion is more important. There are a thousand different ways to celebrate a big play, the rules state you leave your helmet on in the field of play, period.
Keep your helmet on Joey, we all know you re one bad mo-fo.

you left some stuff out Padre.. Shula hired Bubba Smith to babysit Cox in an attempt to keep him.. didn't work. I am stunned that there is so much argumnt over a really stupid penalty.. he was an ***, no anount of argueing is going to change that. It was a selfish, selfcentered act and has NO place on the Miami Dolphins team.

I guess he's just to selfish to care about that, and his followers just worship his stupidity anyway.. amazing.. to you, Joey is more important than the team, to me, he's not.
