I'm assuming you're using XP, so let's start with the obvious:

    - The home of Spybot-S&D!

    Removes spyware and malware

    - Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir

    Free anti-virus software

    - CCleaner - Home

Cleaning tool for unused data trash and registry trash as well as autostart crap (be careful with messing with the registry though; best stay clear if you don't know what you're doing)

    That should get you started.

    Download and install these programs

AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista

    CCleaner - Home

Then restart your computer and press F8 to get you into safe mode, then run those programs to clean your 'puter.

Remember 33. Only use one anti-virus program otherwise you are wasting your time. Always clean in safe mode and delete all system restore points , turn off restore and turn back on when clean then create new point otherwise they will come back.

Have fun you have a lot of work in front of you.

    Good luck mate.

I always run in safe mode. That way nothing is running. You will clean more up that way but it will work in normal mode if you don't want to do it that way.

Please just make sure to only install one antivirus. The malware bytes program I posted will run side by side with your antivirus software so no worries there.

Did you run CC cleaner? That will help you dump all the temp rubbish that could be bogging you down.

It could very well be that you have a lot of unnecessary things running at start up.

I use this program to control these issues. It allows you to turn off anything you don't want to run. Be careful not to shut down any dll's or registry items you may need.

    AutoRuns for Windows

Also while you are in safe mode you can go into add/remove programs and delete any software you don't need.

I can totally understand as I have dealt with these buggers many times.

Your desktop has been hijacked I would think. It sounds like smitfraud or virtumonde to me and these nasties are often hard to clean if you are not trained to do so. I really can't help without seeing the log files but one thing I will say is be careful what you download as there are many instances of rogue software out there.

I've tried my best but if you look around you can find free help out there.

    It is a maddening process.

I did a quick check on the net and a few different sites suggest doing a system restore to regain control of your desktop. My question would be, do you know how far back to go since the last time you had "control", and will the restore bring back the viruses?

I'm glad to hear things are running quicker for you.

I'm still thinking it might just be a smitfraud variant. One mean bugger indeed.

This might give you an idea of what you could be up against.

By chance did you get the Desktop back yet. Can you change the background?

Check your browser. Can you change your homepage?

Two big items when getting back.....

If you haven't done so... Go out and grab yer Windows updates if possible...

To give you some idea for future reference, restore points do not have any bearing on virus and malware infections. You can not clean a virus by going back to a certain point. All you are doing is setting your pc to an earlier time. The virus will remain no matter how far back you go. You wouldn't want to restore to get the desktop back because it won't help.

One thing I will say is I sure hope for the OP's sake that he disabled system restore while cleaning the infections. If not they will be back because they are still in the restore.

Go to Programs/Accessories/System tools/System Restore/Settings. Check the box that says turn off system restore. After you have cleaned the system turn it back on and create new point.

I mentioned this as very important in my first post in this thread.

I would re-clean it but that is totally up to you mate.....

That would be the first option for me self of course but I'm geared to do so. I have everything I need on the external drive so I can reformat and be up and running with everything in 30 to 40 minutes. It is really a quite lovely setup.

You would be amazed at how many don't have things backed up and have no choice but to clean. That is when they call me. Keeps me business running.

Or you could save yourself several thousand dollars and download a linux distro. I'd recommend ubuntu for beginners..

But wait! There was a mac somewhere I saw for about 600.. it looked like a little box.
