Sam... cmon bro, that was uncalled for. I read it and am interested in who wins this battle.. it would totally suck to make the "beta" choice on my next electronic buy.

Thanks for the article. I've read this kind of articles before and the whole " DVD vs. Bue Ray format DVD " has been debated since 2005. The people like me who already own about 100 DVD will be affected. I wouldn't want to go out and rebuy again the titles what I own. Remember when the Laserdiscs came out in the 1990's and the whole thing went the toilet. This will affect all of us in the end.

See I have an HD-DVD add on for my 360, and I have rebought a couple movie that I had on dvd. I would never rebuy them all, but some of the movies I want to see in the better picture because I like them so much.

I really hope Sony doesn't win a format war because it will just encourage them to keep doing this crap. You'd think the company would have learned its lesson after beta. Industry-wide standards are better for everybody but the obstinate company that won't compromise. That company is Sony.

I think the most likely solution is going to be the dual-chipset player, but even that annoys me because Sony still gets its way at least a little bit if that's the way it goes.

Doing what crap--inventing a laser diode and forming an industry-wide standards group to create a format to be read by said laser? Gathering more meaningful supporters in that group than its competitor?

    Yeah, bad job by Sony.

And yet, Beta achieved "industry-wide" use. For example, news companies used (and still use) Beta for filming and archival purposes, thanks to its superior-to-VHS video quality.

The format failed in its attempt to become the choice of consumers, but it still found a niche for itself.

I've never understood how some people can passionately hate a company.

Warner and Fox going with Blu-Ray is great for consumers, because it means there's finally an end to this idiotic format war. Get rid of HD-DVD, focus on bringing Blu-Ray's production costs down. By the time Blu-Ray gets down to a more affordable level, demand for HD content will be widespread enough that Blu-Ray will be ready for widespread adoption.

I don't care about Sony either way except when they pull garbage like this. There was a perfectly good body that worked very well to everyone's benefit that settled on a standard for DVD. Sony walked away from that because they're greedy. If Blu-Ray wins, it justifies their behavior.

Is Toshiba greedy for setting up a rival to the Blu-Ray Association, yet working with Sony on developing and manufacturing the CPU in the best-selling Blu-Ray player on the market, the PS3?

I'm glad I missed the "personify and demonize a company of your choice" boat. Seems to be all the rage on the intertron.

It was a joke. Anybody who knows me knows that I am not here to bash anyone...and I didn't.

Great post. This is just capitalism/consumerism at its finest. Let the best format win and then work on lowering the costs of the winning format. Personally I like Sony and I like their products. For the most part they make quality electronics.

Personally I'm waiting to get into the HD market for a few more years. I'm waiting until someone wins the format war (which is looking more likely now) and manufacturers evolve the technology to the point were fast moving images such as sports and action movies don't appear blurry in HD. The new 120Hz monitors are getting there...

I have both Blu-Ray (PS3) and HD-DVD (Xbox 360) so I really didn't care whether it'd be a long stalemate or someone wins. That said, I sorta liked the idea of an HD-DVD/DVD Combo format that was seen in movies like 300 and Bourne Ultimatum. It allowed me to use it in high def but also on older players that don't support HD-DVD (i.e. laptop DVD drive).

Same for me. Consumer Reports basically is saying the same thing, dont bother until the thing is settled and prices drop.

I agree, I haven't made the choice to buy between a Blu Ray and High Def for that very reason.
