There was 8:32 left in the second quarter when thousands rose out of their orange-backed seats to give the Dolphins a sardonic standing ovation on an overthrown pass.

Not just an overthrown pass, but an overthrown pass that covered 55 yards, give or take a John Beck step or two.

OK, the kid has an arm, and a lot of optimistic fans probably were thinking, "Cam, what are you waiting for? Turn him loose again and again."

Yeah we all gave a standing ovation for that. I am sick of these 2 yard plays every year.

    Back in Miami

The fans gave a standing ovation just for the attempt.
If Cam is going to start the kid then he has to let the training wheels come off. I didn't see a play action pass that I can remember until the second freakin half. We were running at a pretty good clip the first half.
Had 3 2nd and shorts that I can specifically remember. Perfect opps. for play action passes and none.

I don't see the Cameron offensive mystique, I see Wanny ball.

We'd be better off bringing back Wannstache with the play calling we've had the last half the season.

I'm really fed up with Cameron. I get the sense he's tanking the season on purpose. I know we've had some injuries but our offense was fairly successful for awhile, and suddenly we look like we've reverted back to the run on every down, never going down field that we had to suffer through the Wanny years.

I'm thinking the same thing FFIC. You can't win the Lotto unless you play. He'll at wost maybe we get a pass interference call.

He didn't say that at all. At least make sure you understand someone's point before you attempt to mock them for it.

I was really upset about the conservative playcalling until after yesterday. Once Cam loosened the reigns the turnovers came. Cam must be seeing some of this in practice. It isn't in his nature to be a conservative coach which is why it was so puzzling to me. But it is clear that we have major protections issues with our TE's and backs, and our WR's have a hard time getting open. This leads to Beck getting sacked, stripped, and leads him to force plays that aren't there. I would have liked to see them throw the ball once following the Porter INT where they went run 3 times, but the Dolphins got points out of it and in retrospect that is better than what happened the next time we were in the red zone which was a pick that led to a Jets FG. Cam certainly has work to do and has made some mistakes, but I'm starting to feel that the conservative playcalling might not have been such a bad thing.

I'll say one thing, Beck was about 2 "Blind side" shots from going to the hospital yesterday. He holds the ball way too long. I saw many times that the receivers were past the secondary and he either did not see them or is to afraid to throw to them.

A very concise explanation of Throwing deep:

If it's the first series you are throwing deep because -

You have viewed film that tells you the opponent starts the game in press man. The defense is sold old to stop the run. They do not sit back in a cover 2. They get after you from the first snap. You throw deep because you expect them to be in a certain defense.

As the game goes along -

You decipher how the defense has chosen to defend your attack. You gauge whether the defense is what you expected from film study or they are doing something different against YOU. Certain teams are more predictable than others (ala Wannstedt Dolphins). You are always trying to decipher what they are trying to take away. Defenses cannot take away everything. So they take away some things. One thing is always open. The defense is disguising that one thing.

The defensive coordinators running 34 blitzing schemes are the best at it. They are best at it because they have one less fatass linemen on the field. That creates other obstacles such as the requirement of a fatass lineman that demands two blockers on every play. The 34 coordinator has chosen to take way many different things by varying their front and secondary. They mix the linebacker assignments with their linemen assignments. They mix their linebacker assignments with their safety assignments. They change everything on any given down. That is because they have mastered NOTHING. Dave Wannstedt was a different approach. He chose to master one thing - "man". Cover 3 is the best Zone defense that compliments man to man defense. Tony Dungy chooses to master COVER 2. Basing your defense out of a COVER 2 allows you to concentrate on flooding zones based upon offensive alignments. A defense can't mast Zone defense when their focus in practice is man to man. Naturally it takes a different type of player to excel in a zone versus a man to man player. A zone player spends more time concentrating on film study. He is looking for routes based upon pre-snap formations. He is also reading the number two route to tell him the route that number one will run. It makes no sense for number one to run out and number two to run in (for example). That places no pressure on the defense. A defense becomes good at what they do. Some perfect disguise and some choose to perfect a certain coverage.

JOHN BECK HAS TO READ ALL OF THIS AND MORE.

Where is John Beck learning to do that? He has never played linebacker. He has never played cornerback. He has never played safety. The NFL QB has to learn to play all of the secondary positions. He has to learn why someone is aligned where they are. What are they threatening? What are they taking away? Does that match up with my film study.

    SNAP!

Now he is looking for confirmation of what he saw presnap. He has to learn to watch the movement of the secondary. He's not watching the receiver. He knows where the receiver will be (or at least he is suppose to be). The receiver has also been watching the secondary. He is suppose to be reading the same things as the QB in the LINEBACKER/CORNER/SAFETY (and lately the DE) relationship. They must be on the same page. That relationship alone takes years of practice. It is why you always hear about Peyton Manning throwing with his receivers in the offseason. They are building a relationship. They are learning to think what the other is thinking. By the way, the secondary is still moving and they are moving fast. The QB has to read but he has to hide what he is looking at. He's looking the safety off that is looking at him. The safety is disguising the fact that he has read the play. He knows where John Beck is going. John Beck thinks he looked him off. IT'S A GAME DAMNIT!

    THROW!

Any number of things could be causing the short passes that are frustrating you. The defense could be sitting in a cover 2. In a Cover 2, the lone receiver to one side is double covered. There is no threat other than that receiver. On the two receiver side the short pass is covered by a linebacker and a corner or quite possibly a safety and a linebacker. The corner would stay with the outside receiver in this case. It's called 2 man.

Or it could be as simple as John Beck trusts nothing that he is seeing.....

What I'm saying here is that you can't throw deep just to throw deep. There is a route progression. John Beck has to trust his receivers. He hasn't had enough practice with them. So he trust what he reads. He reads to long. The checkdown is always open. The defense is giving that to us. They give us the checkdown and they move in to tackle. It's very simple to defense our passing game. It has nothing to do with the play call. It's all about the development of John Beck and his receivers.

This is the exact reason why you saw the Jets using "single wing" tactics yesterday. They are just using it to score. The down side to using that method is that it does nothing in building the relationship of Kellen Clemens and his receivers. It does nothing for their development. In the grand scheme of things - It's cheap tactics used to move the chains or score. It's short term thinking.

WORD UP Totaly agree. Ive been doin my nut in for the last 3 games! we have had 1 deep ball in i think the whole 3 matches, i saw, Was in Wembley UK, Miami for Buff, and Philly for eagles game. Through the past 2 at pitt and the Jets, you can count the deep passes on one hand. CRAZY. Thats cams calling, and we all know as fans that isnt right.

    I HOPE HE RESIGNS.

look at the 1st year starting Head coaches of the league this year apart from cam. noticing anything??

anyone rem the last deep ball caught by a WR on our team? i think it was CC on that one handed catch while falling down near the endzone a year or two ago. thast the only one that stands out to me. we have ZERO WR on this team besides Ginn. NO ONE ON THIS TEAM THAT IS A THREAT AT TE OR WR or EVEN RB. prob the worst group of players ive seen play in decades. I rem i used to watch the lions hwen they were 1 adn 15 i believe and told my dad how does one become a fan of such a crappy team how bad are their days to go thru that for years. now its come back to bite me in the ***.

He holds the ball that long for two reasons. He was in max protection and should have a good deal of time (even though he didn't) and his WR's aren't getting open. He is a rookie QB so he may be a little slower on his reads, but the players around him are not helping.
