Offensive tackle Austin Jackson has reworked the final year of his contract with the Dolphins.

According to multiple reports, Jackson agreed to reduce his salary in exchange for guaranteeing over $5.4 million of his compensation for the 2026 season. The Dolphins also added void years to the deal and the move will wind up saving them $8.5 million under the salary cap.

Jackson remains set to become a free agent in 2027.

Jackson has been in Miami since being selected in the first round in 2020, but he was limited to 14 games over the last two seasons because of injuries.

Can someone explain void years? Is that years after the contract finishes that he's still getting paid? Or does it mean we cancelled future years so he can re-negotiate after this season?

Fake years that are expected to be voided to temp spread Cap hit from bonus money. Bonus is spread across all years of a contract. 2 years with a $10M bonus counts $5M a year to the cap, even though the player gets the money right away, add 3 void years and that becomes $2M a year. Like all guaranteed/bonus money the cap hit gets recalculated as soon as the contract length changes. Cut the player and all outstanding is immediately added, with the caveat of being able to split between two years if post June 1.

Okay, so....wow. I'm following what you're saying, but what does it mean for Jackson? Is he signed for one season or not? Maybe the "void years" part only applies to payment and not actual roster time.

One season, but lets them move the cap hit to next year too. I find that Spotrac is a good site with NFL contracts as it makes it easy to visualize.
