I just saw this breaking on minor news sites that Miami gabbed rookie Cam Miller off the Raiders practice squad. That seems like an odd move for January and he's on the active roster as of today. Doing a little homework, he was great at North Dakota in college but didn't impress this year in pre-season. Someone will be cut today to make room for this signing.
That’s an odd January move…AND to be on the active roster. What would really bake your noodle is if Tua was relegated to the practice squad.
Basically it means that as long as they want to keep him on the active roster, he's under Dolphins control through the 2028 season. I would expect that he'll be a contender to be Ewers backup next season if that's the direction they go.
If that were to happen it would be, to me, an open admission that Tua is physically broken, either the hip, arm, or brain...or all three.
I think it's just likely that they're shutting down Tua for the year. And if they have no intention of playing at all, then they probably just want someone else to be the emergency 3rd QB.
That is absolutely possible. But Miller does have enough potential upside and team control that it could be more. This isn't a 30 year old guy who would be a UFA in March.
That is true. But he's also a super late around draft pick who was signed off a practice squad of a team whose QB room is far from stellar. Then again, maybe we're both right and they just figured that if we're going to grab a 3rd QB, we might as well find one with some kind of potential.
I like Cam Miller more than I like Quinn Ewers. People want to tie 2026 to Ewers after one game are setting themselves up for a Will Levis experience. We need to acquire as much young talent as possible at the quarterback position and it needs to be an open competition. Don't get me wrong, I like Ewers, but he's a long ways away from being a surefire starter.
I personally like Ewers more, but I do agree with you that we've seen two games and it means very little in the grand scheme of things. He could be great...he could be a complete bust. There's no way to tell without meaningful reps and I'm thrilled we're getting him that experience. Even if he's not the guy, it's still a good thing that we're seeing what he has early. For Cam Miller, it sounds like he's just inexperienced at the NFL level. His preseason tape isn't great, but Oakland drafted him because Brady saw some qualities he believed that could be developed. I trust Brady's eye more than my own (obviously, duh) so it's certainly not a bad move. Two young prospects in the stable is always better than one. This might also mean that we won't draft a QB this year. The move could have been as simple as Miller having more upside than any of the mid or later-round QBs in the upcoming draft, so we were proactive and saved a draft pick for something else.
Oh I think the odds of Ewers being a mid-level starting Qb in the NFL in 2027 are slim. I just want to get through next season with him, earn a high draft pick, and then draft our long term starter. And then maybe Ewers can be the backup for a while after that.
I agree man. Not so much on this site...But on social media, I'm reading comments from room temperature IQ fans proclaiming that he's already our guy for next season and beyond. Some are comparing him to Marino. I'm trying not to let it annoy me because it's what fans do, but people really need to hit the brakes on this guy. How many times have we seen this? Most recently with Will Levis in Tennessee. He played a couple of good games and the next thing you know he's on the cover of magazines and people throughout the area are saying he's going to be great (I live in TN). I don't see it with Ewers. I don't see franchise superstar quarterback. He's got some charisma, he can throw it, but he's missing the hunger. (This next part might upset some of you). The kid had a silver spoon upbringing. Everything has been handed to him his entire life and you can see that clear as day. A lot (not all) of guys like that have a limit to how great they want to be because they've never had to fight for anything. He's already playing with house money. He doesn't have to worry about feeding his family, or making a better life for himself. I think that ultimately became the issue with Tua as well. Again, I'm not saying that's the case with all these privileged kids. Peyton Manning was great, and continued to be great even after he got his bag. A lot of these guys come into the league already having everything served up to them on a silver platter. Dan Marino came from a working class family in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. That was part of what made him so great. There is no comparison between Ewers and Marino aside from they both play quarterback. Maybe my judgement on Ewers is a bit biased and harsh, but I don't see "it" when I watch him. I see a kid having fun, having an experience, and trying his hand at the sport. If he fails..."oh well, I'm already a millionaire and I went farther than most." There's something about him that I don't like and the only thing I can pin it to is "spoiled rich kid". I could be totally wrong about him and if so, I'll gladly admit it. In the end, the only thing that matters is can he play the position at the level we need him to? Like I said, this is a personal preference and I'm not going to let it cloud things too much for me. Again, I realize that times have changed, I also understand that most of these athletes have it pretty good growing up. It's not as if Ewers is the only one (Arch Manning says "hold my beer"). Me personally, I don't like his brand of person, but I'm a Dolphin fan for life so I'm going to support the look that he's getting. If he helps us win a Super Bowl, what does it matter?
The chance of anyone other than a top 3 draft pick being mid level NFL QB or better is remote. Even then getting a top 3 pick who is both good enough and durable enough (Luck, RGIII, maybe Burrow) is far from a given. Tanking a season on the hope that 'our guy' will pop up in the draft has a long history of failure. Ewers' big mystery box is whether the footwork problems that caused inconsistency in college can be cured. I'd rather hope that Ewers can be coached up than suck for a season gunning for a top 3 pick
