Now, before anyone gets too sensitive or defensive, this is not about Tua. This is not about replacing him. This is about trying to find a good developmental project who can be a back up in the meantime.

Even all the Pro Tua guys here have said that they think we should be looking to draft a QB every year just in case and we all agree that we need a better back up. If nothing else, we all realize the injury factor with Tua.

I wanted to draft this guy last year, but somewhere like where NE got him in the sixth round.

This team doesn't do good with drafting QBs and cultivating QBs for future possibilities. In recent years, they haven't even really tried at all.

I think if Mcdaniels and the coaching staff are good at what they do, they should welcome a chance to develop a guy like this.

He also fits the mold of the modern day QB. He's big, strong, mobile and has a strong arm.

Now, I'm not saying it would definitely work out, but I think, given this bad QB class this year, this would be a better option to find that developmental guy.

He showed some decent flashes this past year in the limited time he played. I know it was preseason and in the regular season, it was against the Bills backups, but he's a backup and he looked pretty good. You could see some good potential.

It probably won't even be possible and I heard the Raiders are interested in him, but who knows? I don't have any faith that they'll do it, but I think it's certainly worth a try.

I don't think you're wrong on trying to develop someone. I also don't think it every really works. Two things can be true at the same time.

Of all the QB's drafter after say the 3rd round, there are a handful of QB's that could be starters vs. the hundreds and hundreds that have been drafted over the past 2 decades. Even the 1st rounders and 2nd rounders the % that actually contribute as meanifull starters is very very low. You can find the outlier like Purdy, but that is almost impossible to do. We have enough holes that I don't want draft picks in the 3rd or 4th maybe even the 5th round used on this exercise. The deeper you get in the draft round the more likely that someone won't be found goes up exponentially IMO.

If New England has ANY inkling that Milton could be a good QB, why would they trade him to us in the division?

Why would a team desperate for a reliable and stable solid backup QB trade for a guy who is the opposite?

We should absolutely replace Skylar with a developmental prospect, but if we aren't bringing in a QB who can win NFL games to be a backup we are doing something wrong.

Yes, trading him in the division is an obstacle. The QB class this year is underwhelming and so are the available backups. I think he can be a stable guy given good coaching and development, but also having the potential and possibility to be something a lot more in the future. When you are on your back up, those chances too are low that it will lead to success. I think he’s way better than a Thompson or Boyle. You sometimes have to try these shots. Yeah, they often don’t work out, but it is good to try and I think there is some good signs for this guy for some of the reasons I previously mentioned.

He has more upside than Thompson or Boyle, but neither of those guys belong in the league to be frank. I wouldn't really care about a late round pick, but I'm not going into the season with him as the primary backup.

That’s fine. Get a vet, though there are not many good ones to be had and as I said, so many teams need a QB. My point was more than just getting a back up as I mentioned. The team can do both. Just please, not a Jacoby Brisett again. lol
…and I do think he can be a good enough backup for the reasons I previously mentioned, but there can be a much bigger
    payoff.

On one hand, I see the vision. On the other hand, I'm still iffy on taking a New England backup QB.

We need a solid veteran backup. Grab a QB in round 3 or 4 to develop.

Yep...Definitely need a backup. Sam Howell is the guy I wish we could get. He'd get it done in a McDaniel offense.

I looked at Milton coming out of Tennessee, I wouldn’t invest into him but we do need to find someone to develop besides a 7th round pick like Skylar.

Some have mentioned in this tread and in the Minshew thread that they would rather sign a vet and and or draft a developmental guy in the mid rounds.

    Serious question:
It's a good thought, but who are some of these 3-4th round QBs that you think would be that good option to be that developmental guy?
I don't even like any of the top prospects in the draft. I kind of like Will Howard later, but he'll probably get drafted too high and I'm not exactly thrilled with his game anyway.

    ....and the vets?

Do we want to spend a 3rd or 4th rounder when we need O line help, LB and CB help might be a better question. I know we need a back up but we need so much more.

LB help?! If they resign Dodson?(the guy from Seattle), were quite good there although I wouldn’t mind something like a Roquan Smith type at MLB. We need OL, DT, S, CB, TE before I maybe get to LB‘s. But hey, that’s not what the thread is about, so I‘m a little queasy about this regime picking a QB mainly cause of Grier, I think McDaniel is good with QBs, look at Tua.

Well, you quoted my response and my question was a response to what others have mentioned. Simple question. Whatever.

Well in your response I quoted you stated "Serious question: It's a good thought, but who are some of the these 3-4th round QBs that you think would be that good option to be that developmental guy?

    So it was pertinent.

Hopefully folks realize that finding a solid QB1 in the draft is incredibly hard given how the league currently operates and expects 1st rounders to be day-one starters. But at least when you give a QB 34 games (2 seasons) to figure the NFL out, the entire offense is built specifically for them and what they do well. Most will wash out, while a few will thrive.

Now look at Skylar. He's sat the bench for years and brought in when Tua goes down. He's not getting weekly reps, he's not working with a playbook built around his strengths, and he's not experienced with our other starters. Everything is working against Skylar and his chances of looking great. And we get a narrative that our front office just can't draft a QB.

Skylar was a great prospect. He did okay, but he's not the guy. Rinse and repeat.

Backup QB is by far the hardest position in the league, and in many ways it's the second more important position. The odds of hitting are incredibly low due to lack of reps, etc. We must keep drafting a QB prospect and let him compete...or bring in more Fitzpatrick/Matt Moore types. That's the only two routes.

Yeah, I know, my man, I’ve suffered through that rinse and repeat thing for decades. lol. I was just offering up, imo what I thought could possibly be a better solution. I prefaced it with expressing my doubts of it happening or working out. Then some mentioned to just draft a guy later on. I then just asked who this later round player is that they have in mind.

Right, too often people are saying something that is correct in general, but when pressed on who they specifically should target, they can't answer because in reality, there isn't anyone really available who fits the things they say we should go after.

I mean, also it's because how many people really watch more than like 1-2 games of even higher profile guys? Most Canes fans have probably seen plenty of Cam Ward, but did you see more than 1 game of Kyle McCord? Riley Leonard? Kurtis Rourke? Probably not. You listen to draft pods, follow some guys on Twitter who tell us about other guys, show a few highlights.

Personally, QB seems more or less a total waste in the first 3-4 rounds. Still mostly a waste after that but players in that range in general are so whatever. Using a third on someone like Will Howard makes me want to barf, especially with the needs we have.

Just grab a Zack Wilson or Gardner Minshew or, most likely, Mac Jones. Maybe nobody is interested in that weirdo Russell Wilson as a starter and we can get him for a cheap contract.

I'd rather have Russell as a backup than any other of the aforementioned. Especially Mac Jones, since I believe that, as a QB evaluator, Bill Belichick is highly overrated.

He definitely is, but remember that Jones was reportedly the favorite in San Fran for a long time until Lance's running won them over. McDaniel was part of that staff. Plus Jones was Tua's backup in college, so it's a natural progression. :chuckle:

We could do worse. He isn't lighting the world on fire, but as a backup he can win a few games. Think of last season, if we had gone even 50-50 while Tua was out we would probably be a playoff team. Jones could have won that.

That said, Wilson would work too, though I wonder if DK may be asking Pittsburgh to keep him. Not sure if they were bros on Seattle or not. But if Wilson goes back to Pitt, then maybe Fields is available.

My first choice for backup QB would be Zach Wilson followed by Mac Jones. Zach Wilson was in a terrible situation to start his career. Aaron Rodgers came in and wasn't much better. Mac Jones had Belichick but was also on a garbage roster. I think either of them would do very well in Miami.
