The Steelers have some big decisions to make at quarterback for 2025. On Tuesday, they made one that will be far less consequential than others.

Skylar Thompson signed a futures contract with the team. His agency announced the move this afternoon.

It makes him part of the 90-man offseason roster. Which is more than what the current quarterbacks on the rosters will be, unless they re-sign. Each one — Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen — will become a free agent in March.

Last year, the Steelers moved on from Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph, hitting the full reset button at the most important position on the team.

Time will tell whether the Steelers clean house again, or whether one or more will stick around after his first season in Pittsburgh.

Thompson, 27, was a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2022. He has 10 regular-season appearances, three regular-season starts, and one playoff start, from 2022 at Buffalo.

That’s good - it takes the decision out of Grier and McD’s hands, since they had some bizarre love for the guy.

We're on the road in Pittsburgh next season. If Skylar makes the team it could be an epic showdown for sure.

Very loose definition of epic there, T4L.

PS. It certainly couldn’t be to pick his brain about the Dolphins’ playbook, so this move is definitely puzzling

Maybe we can bring in Fields lol. Steelers don't seem to know what to do at QB.

He will get cut during training camp. Somehow get back on our practice squad and wind up starting a game next year.

Imagine if all of a sudden he turned into a good QB? I think I'd give up watching football. Hahahaha

That's what I almost felt watching Darnold this year. Guy has been an epic bust until this year (remember he was picked 3rd overall). Thankfully he showed everyone some of that bust-ness in the last 3 games for Minny (including the playoffs). Something just wasn't right with the world of football seeing him do so well. Now things are better lol.

He hasn't done that well either, but he did start off with a 93.7 his rookie year, and in year 3 a 95.9. I get what you're saying, and I totally agree his 106.8 this year is just not right, but it's not Darnold level crazy.

I actually like Baker Mayfield. I think he’s a good quarterback, I think he's one of those guys that finds a way to win in this league. It damn sure wasn't his fault that TB took the loss Monday night. He took the Browns to the playoffs, he's had the Bucs in the playoffs the last two seasons. Not a hall of fame guy, but he's good enough to win with, especially if you have a good offensive line and defense backing him.

Darnold was a big mystery. He was a prodigy coming out of high school. I'm glad he found a home in Minnesota. If not there, he'll get a job as a starter somewhere else.

As for Thompson....I wish him well. I never want to see him in aqua again though. Can't believe people actually suggested that he was the best option for this team.

I liked Skylar and saw a lot of potential in him his rookie season. Sadly though, he didn’t grow into a viable, reliable backup.

Wish him well and who knows, like Darnold, perhaps a different offensive system will play to his strengths and he’ll have a successful career…just so long as it’s not against Miami.

Donald will be interesting for the Vikings. Do they sign him long term even though a rookie first round pick is there? Do they release a QB that led you to a 14-3 regular season ?

I think Darnold’s stock actually goes up if he remains in Minnesota as their backup. If that kid they drafts stumbles or is injured again and he steps up once more, the team is his.

You have to feel sorry for Jets fans (OK maybe not). First they suffer through watching Geno Smith have a renaissance and now Darnold. Next thing you know Wilson will figure out football on some other team.

I would take a flyer on Wilson if he becomes available. Rodgers didn't look much better so maybe he was just in a bad environment with a lot of pressure on him.

Have you guys looked at how terrible the Jets have been at QB in the last 15 years?

These are all ratings for the entire year for the starting QB!!

    Sanchez era
    2009: 63.0
    2010: 75.3
    2011: 78.2
    2012: 66.9

    Geno Smith era
    2013: 66.5
    2014: 77.5

    Fitzpatrick era
    2015: 88.0
    2016: 69.6

    McCown era
    2017: 94.5

    Darnold era
    2018: 77.6
    2019: 84.3
    2020: 72.7

    Wilson era
    2021: 69.7
    2022: 72.8
    2023: 77.2

    Rodgers era
    2024: 90.5

Absolutely pathetic. LOVE IT. Hate the Jets.

I wouldn't want him as the primary backup but would take a flyer as a third string developmental guy.

Worst organization in the league (along with Chicago) for developing a young qb.
