Happy New Year everyone! This is it, the season finale! Who's going to walk away with the unofficial title of 2024 Pick' Em Champion? For total correct picks, I have a one game lead on Unlucky13 but for overall percentage, he leads me by .02% with Puka-head not far behind at 70.2%. Thank you to everyone who played this season. If everyone still wants to continue, I'll keep the Pick 'Em going for the playoffs. Final results for Week 18's Pick 'Em. As expected, teams that we didn't think should win pulled off stunning upsets and me being the blonde I am, it didn't dawn on me not to have a tie breaker for Sunday night's game since there is no Monday game. Somehow I have a feeling with yesterday's disappointment of Miami's season ending without a post season shot, no one really cares about a "declared weekly winner". Final results for the 2024 Pick 'Em for the regular season. Thank you all so much for playing and your patience. I really enjoyed this. The_Dark_Knight: 272 games 190-82 69.9% Unlucky13: 271 games 190-81 70.1% Fishhead: 271 games 180-91 66.4% Vmarcilfn75: 272 games 175-97 64.3% Hooligan: 270 games 175-95 64.8% Finatik: 247 games 166-81 67.2% Puka-head: 239 games 164-75 68.6% danmarino: 243 games 161-82 66.3%
So TDK and Unlucky exceeded that 67% level that the best machine learning algorithms tend to average over a full season. That's impressive. Puka and Finatik reached or exceeded that too, but not quite over a full season. A few percentage points difference is huge btw, so congrats on that. Probably useful to see what the average is across multiple years to see if you can do that consistently.
Yes I tried doing it a couple years ago and it was very difficult. Thanks for picking it up and running with it.
I, and I’m certain others did also, made picks based off of “want” rather than reality. I bet most of us could have done even better if we took bias and want out of the picks. I bet the spread on games all season, have for a while, never bet on the Dolphins or teams I hate and I always come out ahead each season.
Half a game, brother! You got me, lol. I don't remember which game I missed, but its all good, and I enjoy doing this.
Honestly, gut has always been a huge part of how I do it. Sometimes it burns me, but a lot of other times it pays off. I don't know how much I include "want" into that, but its inevitable that its some of the time, especially in tossup games. I also think that the NFL being more unbalanced right now than it has been in a while makes it easier than it was for many years. Ten teams finished with five or fewer wins this season, and just picking against those most of the time is easy money. We had a NFL record nine teams with 4 or fewer wins through 16 games this year before a few of them won this past week in meaningless games. Same on the other end with the five teams that won 13+. That's half the league right there. That was often the case in the 90s when I was doing this in high school and college, but then there was a stretch of ten to fifteen years where things got a lot more fair and even, and picking wasn't nearly so obvious.
It was a Thursday night game early on in the season. When I saw how close you and I were throughout the season, the competitor in me said, "oh hell no, I gotta stay ahead of Unlucky" LOL. Great job my friend...and great job to everyone else who played. I should have asked Finatik early in the season if he could have gotten with the powers that be to see if the winner could have been granted a year's membership to the club level. Give everyone something to play for other than bragging rights.
Maybe that could be the prize for next season’s contest. Hopefully, next year at this time we’ll also be looking forward to a playoff game involving our team.
Only you and Fish, out of those who played, aren’t in the Club. You two should check it out if you haven’t. MUCH better discussions and I never even lose my cool in there. Lol… And there is a lot of disagreements. It’s not an echo chamber at all. But because everyone is pretty reasonable it never gets out of hand.
Its a smaller group than it used to be as well. Probably a third of the regular posters in club now compared to when i upgraded back in 2012. Just a group of guys who all know one another talking football.
