I know some will disagree with me, but I have seen enough from Mike McDaniel our issue started last year down the stretch when teams learn to defend against the offense leading to an epic fail in December and the playoffs. McDaniel has again and again failed to adjust and stuck to his usual play scheme. This team has underperformed, and I believe it's because of McDaniel inability to adjust to other teams schemes Hill and Waddle made a mistake signing new contracts as their talent is being waisted here in Miami. The biggest issue is this team might need to go into the rebuild period as it's built all wrong and this is on Greer who needs to be fired too.
Sad but true.It ain't working.Cast blame where you may but the season was over after Tua was hurt and the back up QB was a non factor.
I don't care what happens to McDaniel. No matter who we bring in to replace him will get three years, fail, and we'll hire someone to replace that failure.
Why do you assume the next coach will fail? I personally believe that some people thought this team and players were better than they were, and that is why some might feel like the sky is falling. I personally didn't think they were as good as others here, so to me and some others, what we're seeing isn't surprising. They are who we thought they were. Get rid of Grier and McDaniel. Get GM then let GM pick his coach. That's the best way to have the best shot at success.
The damning part to me is the fact that this team got worse this year after all the changes we made and fat contracts we handed out. Even if you take away the games Tua was hurt, when he was back this team was still far worse than last year. Yes, there's some key injuries (phillips, chubb, armstead etc etc) but that's kind of the point. It's a problem when you spend so much time signing players with long injury histories. It's just the nature of the game, but Grier thinks hes smarter than everyone else. To not have depth behind those kinds of players is ridiculous. QB depth for example.... that alone should cost someone their job.
Emotions are running high right now, understandably so. Our season is all but over and the question now becomes, what now? I just finished watching the game on DVR…pesky Christmas shopping lol. Well, watching this game there was one element and one element only that was the detriment to the team today and that was the offensive line. The Texans defensive line manhandled our offensive line, getting off blocks to drop Achane and Mostert for minimal gains, pushing the blockers back into the pocket causing it to collapse and running around them to pressure the quarterback like they were turnstiles. With that anemic of play, it’s no wonder why our offense was completely shut down. There’s no doubt we have great talent at the skill positions on the offensive side of the ball. To deny that is ludicrous but like building a house on a poor foundation, sooner or later the house will crumble. You can get by on sheer talent playing subpar teams but once you start playing playoff caliber teams in crunch time, if you don’t have a COMPLETE team, you’re going to falter and the fault for that lack of a complete team falls on the shoulders of one Christopher Grier. Grier has had the reigns of GM since 2016. For 9 seasons, the Dolphins have fielded teams that HE’S assembled. And in those 9 seasons, the Dolphins have had one of the worst offensive lines in the league. His solution? Well, start building up the offensive line by signing defensive players like Kiko Alonso and Brent Grimes. Sure, that’ll help the O-Line. Then, let’s draft Laremy Tunsil only to trade him away a few years later. That’ll help it. Then the next season, let’s sign an aged guard in Ted Larsen who ends up on IR. Then let’s sign another aged guard in Bushrod and use our first 3 picks of the draft to pick even more defensive players. Dawkins would have been a great player to have, even Ramczyk, but no no no. We don’t need any OL talent. I could go on illustrating Grier’s complete disregard for the offensive line but it would make this post longer than it already is. Today, McDaniel had a backup LT who actually played pretty good and a backup to a backup playing RT to protect Tua’s blindside. How did that work out? Not too good. Bottom line, Grier has got to go. He’s had 9 seasons to build a winner and he’s failed. Ross’ return on his investment has been met with a negative return.
The assumption Res is even if something ridiculous like firing McDaniel were to happen, as long as Grier is the GM, McDaniel’s successor will fail. That why getting rid of Grier is THE most vital move the Dolphins have to make.
Well I don't agree that it's ridiculous. Grier needs to go, and McDaniel then also needs to go. Hell, maybe after the dust settles the new GM rehires McDaniel.
Why do I assume the next coach will fail? Idk maybe because it's been the pattern for the past 25 years? It started long before Grier was the GM too. JJ, Wanny, Saban, Cam, Philbin, Gase, Flores, and finally McDaniel. McDaniel was supposed to be a run game specialist. The architect of SFs run game. The next genius. We can't run to ball for sh!t. McDaniel is in over his head.
I guess I'm not THAT fatalistic haha. Seriously though, if the rebuild is done right, I think it's exciting and gives hope.
Hate to say it, but no matter what happens I think Grier is safe. I think only if Tua fails does Grier get canned. McD is a different story. Ross fired Sparano after 3.75 seasons, Philbin after 3.25 seasons, Gase after 3 seasons, Flores after 3 seasons, and now McD is in his 3rd season with potentially a losing record and no playoff wins. Odds are pretty good he gets fired if you go by Ross' history.
I'm against Vrabel. He inherited a team that went 9-7 two years in a row, did little to improve it the next two years (9-7 both years, though in the 2nd year they had that playoff run), then had 2 really good years and then 2 really bad years to end his tenure. He never built a consistently great defense (average rank = 12.5) and his offenses were worse (average rank = 18.5). Most of the candidates are OCs or DCs. I know it would be nice to have an established coach, but it doesn't look likely looking at the list of candidates. It'll be yet another gamble.
Disagree. McDaniel deserves one more year. He needs a OL and defense that can tackle and cover consistently. He doesn't draft, that's on Grier for failing to improve these units.
Nice try. You've only said that to put the Tua fans, who are also Grier haters, against Tua. You don't happen to run psy-ops for the government, do you? Did someone just say 'drones'?
Maybe I have, in that case. Apologies to cbrad if so. There's that many Tua haters on here, it's easy to get confused.
Other than the obvious, horrible OL performance, the team as a whole looked surprisingly slow. A game of this importance and they appeared to be dragging a$$. No excuse whatsoever. Texans wanted it more, MUCH more. That's disheartening when the playoffs were on the line. Did MM lose the locker room? Certainly looks that way.
I just think you have to let the new GM decide the coach. I'm not against keeping McDaniel, but that needs to be the new GMs decision (if we get a new GM)
If McDaniel lost the locker room then he needs to go. I just think we are likely to have another winning season with him and I'm not ready to toss his success away when he has been working with flawed teams.
I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s lost the locker room. Not saying it’s not possible, but I think his players really like and respect him. That could be lip service, but I never saw the team talk highly about Flores, for example. Maybe I missed it if they did. I am more than willing to give McD another 2 years. In Shanahan’s first 4 seasons in San Fran he had 3 losing seasons. Granted his one winning season was a SB loss, but after that he had another losing season. The next 3 were lights out with 2 NFCCG appearances and 1 SB appearance, but their record is the same as Miami’s right now. It’s hard to be the Chiefs and Patriots before them.
I haven't seen any evidence either but it has been brought as a possibility on this board. Agreed and he has been successful so again I'm good with keeping him at least one more year
He’s done enough his first 2 seasons for me to not want to blow it all up because he’s going to miss the playoffs this year because he lost his starting QB for a good chunk of the year. Lot of knees jerking in this thread. When you factor in the odds of a replacement doing any better you don’t get rid of a guy who has given 2 playoff seasons.
several of us were saying that the Dolphins would be worse, but there are those club people saying the team would be better\stronger\faster
I think I would lean towards keeping. McDaniel, if you look at some of the plays and film the OL just gets destroyed. Hard to play that way. Assuming that is on Greer of course.
