Funniest thing I have read in a long time. Chad better be on the look out for those scary defenders. ESPN - Wildcat weakness: Destroy the vulnerable QB - AFC East
Are you sure this wasn't written by Rodney Harrison? Saying that Ricky's hit on Vrabel was dirty is still the funniest thing Ive read in a LONG time.
Well he brings up a good point, Chad is vulnerable out there and that's the reason I'd like to see a WR take his place when running that play. Pennington is fragile as it is, why subject him to unnecessary hits?
Yeah, but it adds a dynamic to the formation. If you put Chad in motion the D now has to worry about 2 players who can pass.
That's why you just take him out of the play. If he is knocked down, they don't have to worry about him and then have an extra defensive back to cover a receiver.
I think having Chad out there is what makes the play work. What would make it even sweeter is to have Pennington going in motion towards Ronnie Brown right as the ball is being snapped. Then the D has another thing to worry about. I think Chad is smart enough to get out of the way. He can just fall on the ground if need be.
It also allows us to run the no huddle offense which, I feel, had as much to do with our sucess last Sunday as the Wildcat.
It isnt really that big an issue- There are limits to what they can do to him. What is the plan? Stick a defender big enough to knock him down out in space? When is the last time you saw someone get knocked down by a jam? When has anyone ever been hurt by that?
No I know that. I was thinking him going from the shotgun position to the WR spot being illegal. EDIT: Probably should have read rest of Roman's post lol.
Yes send the scariest player over simply to hit the QB as opposed to defending the running play that's likely coming. Worst idea ever. I hope teams take his advice.
also. his big solution was to "detonate the quarterback". if he knows that you know the team facing whoever pulls this package out of the cards has got to know that.
This was Lee Corso's advice to Tom Jackson and the defense when they played vs the Wild Cat at Louisville years ago. Makes sense.
I think you just cannot have two guys in motion at the same time, or you cannot have a TE or a lineman shifting while another player is moving. I have seen many college teams bring a guy in motion, and then he stops and gets into a set position, and then they have another guy go into motion. I like all of the different formations college teams seem to use....I know most NFL teams don't try this "trickery" because they feel NFL defenders are too fast to be fooled by this, but Ronnie Brown fooled the Pat's D five times in a row.
I'd like to see them run a screen, Ronnie to Pennington... Pennington drops back and hits Ginn deep... Well, maybe on a post route or something...
Theres one HUGE major reason everyone is missing as to why we HAVE to have a QB in this formation to work...while we are in the huddle..defenses have no idea what we are going to come out in formation with....if their is no QB in the huddle..they can make defensive substitutions...because they know it will be a run play... This way we can switch back and forth....with no heads up to the D
I don't think this is really a good reason, because the formation has 3 RBs, 2TEs, and no WRs. It's easy to identify after the first time.
yea but this writer stole that from Jackson and Corso and acted like this was all his brilliant idea... chump.. go back to barfalo
I don't think it's that scary because if he either doesn't really do much and a defender tees off on a player just standing there I see a healthy penalty coming up. Also, any teams that blows up Chad on the play my gut feeling would that the opposing QB would have at least one Joey Porter smack on order for their own.
Maybe, maybe not...but one thing for sure, if they (the D) expends a special guy to 'take care of' CP when he's out there at WR, that's one less defender of the play...would taking out a QB be worth giving up a TD on the play ?? I doubt it...I think that would be the last thing they'd worry about...afterall, they can most likely use a safety or 3rd CB to just 'keep an eye on CP' and not have to really worry about him...Now if this was Tenn or Oakland or even Philly, then you might have to worry about the QB making a play, but CP?? I don't think so...
But when you have running backs and tight ends who can catch the ball, it kind of adds another variable to this formation so there are other options.
I wonder if Tim Graham has sent his resume to the Patriots? Yea, go ahead and detonate the QB so you can get a 15 yard personal foul penalty.
If you wanna take a cheap shot at a QB, you can just as easily have someone do it on a conventional play. In terms of legal play, there's not a whole hell of a lot they can do besides hope Pennington really throws himself into a block in a high traffic area.
No doubt there is some receiving threat there, but teams are tipped off as soon as the personnel package runs out onto the field. A no-WR, 3-RB, 2-TE package is going to throw up alarms, and surely did on the very first play.
Really whoever wrote that article was a moron. Like Sparano said, all Chad has to do is fall down or duck. If they want to put someone like Seymore or Vrabel out there to cover him then thats one less defender in the box. If they want to still try and "detonate" him it will be illegal. They could just as easily hit a QB after he throws the ball from a normal set, and it would be just as illegal. Having Chad in there just is an extra dimension to the play. Want to load up on DLs and LBs to stop it? Motion Chad back in and have Ronnie split out. Ill take Ronnie being covered by a MLB as a matchup he can win pretty easily. All Chad needs to do is take himself out of the play. If the defender comes at him just drop. If they ignore him run a little out pattern or something and throw him the ball lol.
Why not put Henne in ther for the Wildcat? He is more athletic, and a bigger threat to thorw the deep ball should the play be designed for the ball to somehow get to the QB lined up on the edge.
dumb article. he can clearly see whatever defender is trying to jam him. and he can't be tackled or slammed. he's relatively stagnant, and really only has to worry about watching a guy try and stuff him at the line. he is a grown man and a pro athlete. if teddy ginn has nothing to fear out there all game long, im not really concerned that CP is gonna get himself hurt by a CB jam.
He knows the snap count... He could fall to the ground. He could line-up a foot from the sideline and step out. IF...it became a problem having Chad out there, they could simply remove him and put in a blocking TE or WR. I do not see Chad being a problem out there... GO PHINS!!!
I don't buy his theory. The Qb on any team can be killed from behind on any, and every play by players MUCH bigger than any Db will ever be. Taking a jam by a Db for a few seconds is not really a big deal and it actually evens the playing field because the Qb is most likely not going to see the ball thrown his way MUCH but a defender will have to stick with him no matter what.
