I was responding to a comment about Durham Smythe, he is the one dimensional blocking TE. I'm optimistic on Smith.

We pounced on him almost as soon as he was released. Two things about signing Smith that I like:
    1. We have already figured out how to handle our salary cap.
    2. Tight end play was clearly identified as an area to upgrade and rather than wait to see what options shake loose, Smith was seen to be a priority target. His signing so soon also means he wants to be in Miami. The $10 million also means he's going to be in the game plan.

Your genius never ceases to amaze. I'm SO glad I was proven wrong and we were able to keep Wilkins, Baker, Howard, Hunt, etc... You were right man sorry to have ever doubted your genius.

Yeah, as if anyone expected them to keep an old X or a mediocre Baker at their cost. Willing and Hunt are still Dolphins. We’ll see what they want for money and whether or not the coaches think they’re worth the price.

One thing is for certain, however, none of these guys are or will be cap casualties so you’re batting 1.000 on being wrong.

Wrong again. They don’t have the cap space to keep anyone. Or so I’ve heard. Lmaooo

Based on what other guards are better Hunt is about to get seriously paid

Yeah, looks like the OG price point has gone up. Hopefully things like no income tax, playing for a playoff team, and having a great HC will sway some of these guys to take a little less. We will see. The price point is the price point, both Wilkins and Hunt are set to get a good payday, and the Dolphins (hell all teams) will be spending on those positions no matter what, but depending on what each want and what the market says they’ll get I suspect the Dolphins would rather sign them than pay nearly as much for other players.

    SO Cal
But weren't you saying before that X needs to be gone since he lost a step? Now you're arguing we should have kept him? I'm confused.

Don't be confused. Trolls are contrary to anything that may be seen as a positive for real fans.

Hopefully, as hitman8 said, the Dolphins can represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this season. lol

:sidelol: really?! He better return to his pre injury form. If not he’s the worst punter we’ve had in quite a while.

Yeah, X was overpaid to begin with, but we don't have anyone to replace him thanks to Grier's horrible drafting at CB.

Yeah, most probably none of them are coming back to the Dolphins. Saying we're letting them go because we don't think they are worth the payday is a copout. We can't outspend other teams, period.

No one will pay X or Baker what the Dolphins were paying them. Both were paid accordingly while they were here, now X is old and Baker can be replaced at a cheaper price.

    cry harder

In all honesty, we really don’t know what Cam Smith can do. He never had an opportunity to play.

Lol i loved xavien, but i hope hes not salty about the release.. the dolphins took care of him the whole way. I understand his frustrations, he was the best corner on the team and at one point making less than Jones.. but the dolphins restructured a contract that still had years in it just to make right with him.. a contract they didnt have to revisit at all.

his time is done here.. we got enough depth back there.. and he was getting cooked a few times during the end of last season

Hunt is the one I don't want to lose. Don't wanna lose Wilkins either, but at least bring Hunt back. We can't afford to take a step back with the O line.

Here’s something I hadn’t read re:Wilkins and the Dolphins attempts at signing him before the 2023 season.

“General manager Chris Grier said a few months ago that Wilkins and his agent agreed that the team’s summer 2023 offer was fair. (Wilkins’ agent, David Mulugheta, generally hasn’t addressed his client’s contract issues publicly in the past, and Wilkins declined to discuss the matter consistently last season.)”

“But Wilkins decided that he should be paid in line with other defensive tackles who had much higher sack production than his pre-2023 sack numbers.

Wilkins had 11.5 sacks through four seasons before producing nine sacks last season.

    ▪ Wilkins bet on himself and produced the career high in sacks, though his overall tackles plunged from 98 to 65. His 10 tackles for loss tied for 52nd in the league and fell from 16 in 2023.”

    https://amp.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article286259755.html

All of this handwringing around here isn’t justified. If the Dolphins had paid Wilkins what he was apparently asking before 2023 most here would have criticized Grier for paying too much based off of Wilkins career numbers at that point. Wilkins balled out on a contract year, will it last? Who knows, I think it will, but paying him upwards of $25m AAV may just not be worth the money. DT’s not named Aaron Donald aren’t really game changers. And for $25m AAV the Dolphins could get two really good proven DT’s if they want.

Saying that, I do hope Wilkins returns, but the ball is in his court. They CAN pay him that much if they want because there will be plenty of cap space with an extension. (His cap hit over the next 2 years would most likely be less than $12m per year). The question will be if they WANT to pay him that much and also whether or not they feel like his production can be replaced.

We ran into the business part of the league here. We weren't shortchanging him or demanding home town discounts, but Wilkins wanted top dollar, bet on himself and won. He's gonna get paid. Probably not Aaron Donald money, and probably less than Jones will get, but around or slightly more than Quinnen Williams got.

And man, that's A LOT for a DT. It hurts, but you let that go. Also worth pointing out that Baltimore used heavy rotations at DT and DE, so we will probably seek to moneyball those spots. Bring in 2-3 DTS and another DE/Edge or two at low prices and just keep rotating them and hope having fresh guys gets us similar production to Wilkins.

Jones’ deal is crazy. He gets $95m the first three years guaranteed! That’s $31.6m AAV.

Wilkins isn’t Jones and if he thinks he should get anything close to that he’s crazy.

The Dolphins and Armstead are working on an "adjusted" contract. Interested to see what Grier cooked up here.
