With the departure of Vic Fangio, the Dolphins are in search yet again of their next DC, the third in 3 years. There are a number of candidates that are available, some of which we’ve heard some about, others are flying under the radar I didn’t realize Wink Martindale was available. I think THAT’S who we need to go all in for.
Kinda surprised the Falcons went with Morris. Not exactly a great track record, plus there were better candidates out there, IMO. PS. Bellicheat might not get a job this year.
There's a theory floating around Belichick is waiting to see if Andy Reid retires at the end of the season and he'll slide in with KC.
Great coach imo, but I think he’ll get a HC job, but I would like to take that route of taking a DC that has been a HC. Ron Rivera would be nice and please no Staley…
Morris was a DC, and had a pretty good year with the Rams, and therefore could have been a target to replace Fangio. Past history shows that HC might not be for him. The Bellicheat nugget was just for fun.
Good point. Just remember his Carolina D that was really good. Just think a former HC would be a good thing for McDaniel.
If they want experience, I’d go all in for Wink Martindale. He’s a guy that’s a DC for life, they won’t have to worry about him keeping one eye open for HC openings, like you would if they hired a guy like Evero.
I get that Staley the head coach of the Chargers was bad, and that included his defense. But Staley the Defensive Coordinator lead a Super Bowl unit that was absolutely elite. I wouldn't be opposed to the hire. Ramsey also seems to be a big fan, so that's something to keep in mind.
Not sure Vrabel wants to be a DC, but the head coaching options are dwindling, and he hasn’t interviewed for either job. He’d be a guy you couldn’t count on staying for very long, though.
Here's an outside the box candidate. Clint Hurtt, Seahawks DC. Clint Hurtt enters his second season as defensive coordinator after serving the previous five seasons as defensive line coach, adding the title of assistant head coach in 2018. Originally hired on March 16, 2017, Hurtt joined Seattle after two years as the Chicago Bears outside linebackers coach (2015-16) and one year as the Bears assistant defensive line coach (2014). Hurtt's first season as defensive coordinator led to significant changes to Seattle's scheme with the Seahawks switching to a 3-4 defense. The changes helped lead to an improved pass rush, increasing from 34 sacks in 2021 to 45 sacks last season, tied for seventh most in the NFL. Uchenna Nwosu and Darrell Taylor led the team with 9.5 sacks each, becoming the only pair of teammates in the NFL to record at least nine sacks and three forced fumbles last season. Pete Carrols teams are fundamentally sound, they always tackle well, his scheme is not super complicated and allows players freedom to play within the scheme. And while we're at it let's bring Larry Izzo home for Special Teams Coordinator
What if Belicheat came in as our DC until the KC job opened up? And Brady became his boss in the front office? LOL, I have no idea what Belichek has to do with anything. For once I wondered what it was like to troll and now I know. =)
I PERSONALLY believe with McDaniel still being a relatively new head coach, the team needs to hire an established DC. That’s not to say that Dan Campanelli couldn’t step up if we were to promote from within, but then you’d have McDaniel navigating his way as well as a first time DC cutting his teeth. I’m still all for Martindale if we can land him. His defenses with the Ravens were among the BEST in the league year after year.
The biggest problem with Martindale (aside from him being fired twice in three years) is that he runs a much different system. That means we likely turn over virtually the entire defensive staff and may lead to personnel issues since we aren't built to run his scheme.
There isn’t anyone who can step in and make this work as is. It’s going to take players and a reinvestment into the scheme for players and coaches. This will set the team back at least for a while. Depending on who the new DC is it can also cost us players. Many veterans won’t want to be here with an inexperienced guy, while others won’t want to be here with a hard ***. We need a batch of. We coaches also that were recently let go. So we’re not going to be the same team as last year at all. So with that said I really do believe Ross should give McDaniel a safety net and say you got my confidence as coach what do we need to do to build your plan. If Grier is in the way than he should be let go but that would have happened so Grier will continue to steer this team. just rebuild now. I know many will hate it but just do it. We have way to many positions / free agents / coaches that need hired to be contenders next year and I don’t want to spend to cap limit once again to try and make this things work for 1 more year. trade away some player Hill, Mossert etc to get better draft position parlay those to get a rookie QB if McDaniel believes that’s needed. Keep TUA for one more year and let the rookie learn the system / compete draft or sign young Oline players, and a TE, 3 down RB. Draft or sign new corner, a safety and we need a MLB and 2 Defensive lineman / ends to compete
Sounds like Evero is being kept out of the running: https://www.thephinsider.com/platfo...the-splash-zone-1-29-24-defensive-coordinator
He was not a DC anywhere when he was hired by Miami. His last official job was as a head coach. This current guy is a DC on another team.
Ummm...It was my understanding that Vic was DC here and just went to Philly to be their DC? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's called a lateral move. lol
Couple of new names here…. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...tential-candidates-for-miami-job-per-reports/
I noticed Leslie Frazier. Nope, won't work. He was part of the 1985 Bears' "Super Bowl Shuffle" squad. We can't have a person who did end zone celebrations and choreographed dance routines as our DC. We need a rigid, cold, and unfeeling robot that does nothing but yells and chews on glass before he goes home and kicks the dog and slaps his kids around.
Leslie Frazier interviewed for coaching jobs with the Chargers and Raiders. He didn’t get either of those jobs and remains out of work. Frazier, who did not coach in 2023, has an interview scheduled for this week with the Dolphins for their defensive coordinator position, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. Former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich, Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Slowik and Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile also are candidates. Frazier, 64, was most recently Buffalo’s defensive coordinator from 2017-22. He took the year off from football, announcing last February he would return to coaching in 2024. Frazier served as the Vikings’ head coach from 2010-13, taking over as the interim coach after Brad Childress was fired and staying on in the full-time role. He compiled a 21-32-1 record with Minnesota, highlighted by a 10-6 record with a playoff appearance in 2012.
The Dolphins are taking a look at a member of the AFC South for their defensive coordinator vacancy. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Miami will interview Texans linebackers coach Chris Kiffin for the role on Friday. Kiffin joined the Texans a year ago after the team hired DeMeco Ryans as head coach. Kiffin previously worked on the 49ers staff with Ryans and Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel from 2018-2019, with Kiffin as the team’s pass rushing specialist. He was then the Browns’ defensive line coach from 2020-2022. Kiffin, 42, is the son of longtime NFL assistant coach Monte Kiffin and brother of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.
right, but the the question was why would the other guy do it? Vic did it because he did not have a job. The other guy has no known ties to the Dolphins or ever wanting to come here.
Except for the FACT that Vic did not have a job when he went to the Eagles.. The guy mentioned coming here has no known ties to the Dolphins AND is working as a DC currently.
Anthony Weaver is still in the running for a head-coaching opportunity, but he has also drawn interest for a coordinator vacancy. The Ravens defensive line coach will interview with the Dolphins for their DC position, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports. As Weaver toggles his status on the HC and DC carousels, the Dolphins are also preparing to interview Texans linebackers coach Chris Kiffin. That meeting will take place Friday, per NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero. Despite the Dolphins giving Vic Fangio a contract worth more than $4.5M annually — a deal believed to have the veteran coach positioned as NFL’s highest-paid DC — the team is searching for a defensive play-caller for a second straight offseason. The Eagles have since brought Fangio back to Philly. Weaver, 43, is the rare position coach to receive a second interview for a head-coaching position. The former NFL D-lineman has coordinator experience, but just one year of it; and that came for a 4-12 Texans team. Weaver has been the Ravens’ D-line coach since leaving Houston, and interested teams now have Justin Madubuike‘s monster contract year to factor into their decisions. Although Weaver interviewed for the Falcons’ HC job and remains in the running in a Commanders search that has since changed after Ben Johnson‘s surprising decision Tuesday morning, he has not interviewed for a defensive coordinator job during this cycle. The Dolphins are the only team to request an audience with the veteran assistant regarding a DC post. Weaver’s second Commanders HC interview occurred Monday. This is new territory for Kiffin, who joined DeMeco Ryans‘ team during the 2023 offseason. The son of famed DC Monte Kiffin, Chris moved up from the college ranks in 2018 to join Kyle Shanahan‘s staff. He overlapped with Mike McDaniel in San Francisco from 2018-19, when the current Dolphins HC was the 49ers’ run-game coordinator. Kiffin, who assisted as a 49ers pass-rushing specialist, coached the Browns’ D-line for three seasons (2020-22). As of Tuesday afternoon, here is how the Dolphins’ DC search looks: Bobby Babich, linebackers coach (Bills): OUT Anthony Campanile, inside linebackers coach (Dolphins): Interviewed Ejiro Evero, defensive coordinator (Panthers): Interview blocked Leslie Frazier, former defensive coordinator (Bills): To interview 1/30 Chris Kiffin, linebackers coach (Texans): To interview 2/2 Ryan Slowik, outside linebackers coach (Dolphins): Interview expected Brandon Staley, former head coach (Chargers): Interviewed Anthony Weaver, defensive line coach (Ravens): To interview
Babich was promoted by Buffalo and Evero's interview was denied by Carolina so those two are out. I do find it interesting that we are looking at so many options and taking this amount of time (at least through Friday and Kiffin's interview). I feel like if an internal hire was the lean you would just pull the trigger instead of drawing out the process, but who knows.
