Yayy! We can beat a couple teams we shouldn't in the regular season to pretenders with 11 wins, to get smoked in the playoffs. Again. I don't believe you can simply add on to this team. Not with the issues and lack of depth we have.
If Tua doesn't improve and McDaniel doesn't improve, then you are correct. But neither of these are impossibilities. In the meantime, you add and tinker. Teams can and do find players. Whether it's a mid/late round pick that goes off, or a veteran given a new opportunity that thrives, they are out there. Imagine if we had Puka Nakua at our #3 spot for example, or Sam LaPorta at TE. Achane's effect was large and should only improve - we found him round 3, ironically pretty much the only guy we've gotten out of the last two drafts at this point. Though I do think Cam Smith with an offseason will improve - Fangio is notorious for not using rookies and it's his call. If he is retained, it's another reason I expect we invest in the offensive side in the draft. OL, TE, a #3 WR, all are big needs. Get some vets to fill out the defense and then just pray the injury thing doesn't repeat.
Idk bout anyone else but the more I watch Edgerrin Cooper LB from Texas A&M, the more I feel we need him on our Defense. Also go get Tez Walker WR UNC. Draft our Guard or Tackle in the 1st round.
First thing that needs to happen is Grier needs to go but that won't happen until next year. So we are stuck in limbo for another year. Looking forward to a first round playoff exit next year at best.
I wonder - assuming we stick with Fangio - if we even bother taking defenders in the draft. He has a well known rep for not liking rookies, like we saw with Cam Smith. Otherwise he's an interesting prospect, we could use some players with an edge. WR I like Michigan's Roman Wilson in the middle rounds. The OT/OG from Washington (Fashanu iirc) is an obvious round 1 fit. Which means he will either be long gone or we will draft someone else. I mean sure, but that's not happening. I'd like to see Marvin Harrison Jr. in this offense too.
wilson does like to catch with his hands which I like but I feel like Walker has more upside. I feel like Wilson will only ever be a slot guy yet he does look like he would be that annoying WR that always gets open when the defense needs a stop. The kid from Washington is a good one but I just don’t see the physicality. One guy I’ve been looking at is the Tackle from Houston named Patrick Paul. He may also be in the 2nd round too.
Harrison is gone in the top 5 picks. Bowers could slide a bit if the second tier of qbs (Nix,Penix, etc.) go earlier than expected and the WR run starts early. If Bowers were to slide into the early teens, I’d move up and get him. An unlikely scenario, sure, but not impossible.
Chubb and Phillips will both miss about half the season. You could restructure Howard, but if going to play zone again might as well let him walk.
Lack of depth? It was mostly the depth that played this season and they made the playoffs with it. Also beating the "bad" teams consistently is something Miami hasn't done in 20 years so I don't know why people are downplaying it.
Cam Wake tore his achilles at nearly 34 years old in October and was back by June. I'll be surprised if Phillips isn't back by camp time. Chubb might start on PUP and be back by week 5 I think. As for X, Miami just needs to eat the contract and get out of it. He's not worth a 1/4 of what he's due next season. That was a bad extension imho and doesn't really leave an out to help the team.
Agreed but we had like one of the most expensive rosters in the NFL and looked lost against winning teams most of the time. With all the resources we had, this is quite disappointing and the way things look, I don’t think next season is going to be any better…
That would be ideal because it would expose the truth and force a rebuild. I think it’s more like fools gold like we’ve had the last 2 seasons where we win 9-11 games but still aren’t even remotely close to being a contender.
Uh, we had an epic late season collapse, because of all the injured starters. We held on to a playoff spot, and lost the division. Our depth is awful. I'm not downplaying beating bad teams. It was actually encouraging to me to see us beat down bad teams. But we got dominated by good teams.
We were oldest team in playoffs and that was before we signed those DEs. I am also hearing g Fangio might be bailing. We will have no defensive line next year after Wilkins walks.
I just realized we don't have a 3rd or 4th pick. We are ****ed! How Grier has a job is beyond me. New Gm should come in and see what we can get for Hill after coming off a career year. The rebuild needs to start now!We are not winning **** next year.
It’s really incredible that he still has a job. He’s either the best salesman ever or Ross is the biggest billionaire idiot of all time. Maybe both are true. This guy literally blundered 5 picks in the first 2 rounds of the 2020 draft. The whole draft was littered with elite players and he managed to not find one.
Miami's 3 best OL played less than 50% of snaps this year. Eichenberg played over 800 snaps, most of them at the only position on the line he hasn't failed at yet (think PFF still graded him dead last in the league), Ramsey missed 7 games, X missed a few, Phillips missed a bunch, Baker missed 5 games, Waddle missed 3 games, Tyreek missed essentially 2 games, Mostert missed 2 games, Achane missed 5? games. I could go on. I don't think there is a team in the league that could have dealt with the injuries Miami had, they were signing guys off their couches 5 days before a playoff game. To finish 11-6 with all that going on would lead me to believe that the depth wasn't that bad.
I watched a lot of other games via NFL + and often i would think the other teams looked better then us. was hoping i was wrong
I think the Ten game is where i lost faith. In spite of their record, they’re a tough team and this team doesn’t respond well to physical teams. I remember the play where Snead basically pushed Hill to the ground in KC and that one play pretty much summed up this season and team.
Phillips got injured in November, 1 month after Wake. If he follows the same recovery schedule (and he is 9 years younger) then he would be ready for July. That's 2 months before the season starts.
Not worried about Philips and Chubb with the way that modern medicine and rehab has evolved. They are both physical specimens and should be back earlier than expected.
So what is your prediction? Wilkins most likely gone,Chubb and Pbillips coming off major injuries, baker gone,Howard gone?40 mil over cap. A Gm that has no clue missing 2 draft picks
Ironically our best playoff showing in the last 2 decades was with Skyler Thompson leading the charge. I don’t think we’ve been competitive in any other playoff game.
I fully expect the Dolphins to be challenging for the division again and to win at least 11 games, barring catastrophic injuries like this season. They might let Wilkins go, sounds like it and he's not worth the reported $24M he was wanting last season. Sieler is producing at nearly the same level for less than half of that. You can probably re-sign Hunt, Williams and AVG (or be very close to it) with the money Wilkins wants. Howard being gone isn't really a loss, he's been bang average at best for 2 seasons now (and injured a lot), they can replace him in FA with a mid tier guy. They need to upgrade the depth on CB though, Kohou cannot be starting, Apple should be gone, Needham looks like he has lost a step. I expect Phillips and Chubb to be back at full strength, maybe I'm being optimistic on it though. Cap space isn't really an issue for the upcoming season. Ogbah, Baker, Jeff Wilson, Crossen and possibly Sanders gets you to near cap compliance. Tua's extension and then you can restructure a combination of Hill, Ramsey and Chubb as they are due nearly $65M in guaranteed salary which you can convert to signing bonus easily. Same with Sieler, he's due $8.5M in guaranteed salary in 2024 you can push his number down the road as well if you really want to. They might extend David Long and get his $6.7M number down. I don't think the situation is nearly as bad as some think on this board, I see it as they need to make some moves that they can, it's not a wholesale retool job.
Takes a year to get back to normal after ACL Chubb got hurt end of season. He won't be back to himself again until 2025 and as for Phillips no guarantees he will ever be the same. And u bash Howard but look what happened when he went out.how did Apple and Kohu do?And do you really think Seiler will put up those numbers again when all the attention. Is on him without Wilkins? This defense is ****ed.
