Just pondering that in two consecutive years, we traded two different first-round draft picks, both of which we got from the Texans, to two teams who both used them to draft potential franchise QBs. One was Jordan Love, the other was Trey Lance. I guess the Packers still think Love will work out but this is his fourth year in the league and he doesn't look very good from the outside looking in. Lance is a backup on another team and couldn't displace Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant. It would only have been funnier if the Dolphins had wound up with Lance as a backup.
VERY hard to get the QB position right. We tried for 25 years before we finally did. I wanted us to trade whatever necessary for a QB in 2017 after Tannehill's injury, which by luck would have led to either Mahomes or Watson, but in the end we did it. And we were really lucky to pick a QB in 2020. Most drafts don't have even one very good QB. The 2020 draft had Burrow, Tua and Herbert, which might end up being the greatest QB draft in history, eclipsing the 1983 draft with Elway, Marino and Kelly.
That's what, 10 super bowl appearances and 2 rings between the 3 of them? I don't see that happening with the 2020 group unless Herbert leaves SD and goes to a contender because there's no way that Tua and Burrow will get to a combined 10 SBs. I hope I'm wrong and Tua plays in 10 SBs with the Phins and wins 8 (just to throw shade on Tom B) to become the GOAT.
It's a tall order, but their careers are young. Other than high level performance over longer periods, the key stat there is number of SB wins. If this group (mostly Burrow and Tua I think) can win 3-4 over their careers combined, there's a good case to be made. Will be fun to watch.
I really like Purdy, so don't take this comment the wrong way, but he's currently overrated due to San Fran's system much like how Kaep and Garappolo were. None are bad quarterbacks by any means, but they were surrounded by talent and a system that moves the football. I think he's an average starter on an exceptional team. Thank goodness they drafted him though! In many ways, it saved that franchise and I will always be a big Purdy fan due to where he was selected.
Probably the most bizarre high drafted QB in decades. He basically played one year at a lower division school, against a bunch of guys who couldn't make D1 schools, let alone would ever be considered prospects. Why the 49ers and other teams were enamoured with him is just so strange. Its basically one step above taking a kid straight out of high school.
Trying to find a diamond in the rough in this kind of situation that you use a 6th or 7th round pick on is worthwhile. Sometimes it works, and if not, no big deal. But doing what they did is outright mismanagement.
Which is odd, given all the other smart moves they made - the McCaffery trade in particular. Someone in that organization was convinced he was special.
I hate to say it, but I think Burrow is the modern day version of Marino. He’s had his one and only bite at the Apple. He’ll go on to have a fine electrifying career but his ticket has already come and gone. Herbert? Unless something happens to turn around the Chargers, he’ll end up another Jeff George.
