On this date, 247 years ago 56 British colonialists officially committed treason, affixing their signatures to the official draft of the United States Declaration of Independence, citing 27 grievances committed by King George III against the people of the 13 colonies and justifying the cause for independence.

After much deliberation, the 2nd continental congress voted unanimously to break from Great Britain and form the United States of America.

While no country is perfect, while no government is perfect, no nation in the history of the world has achieved so much, so quickly and has done more good for so many.

I’ve been all over the world. I’ve seen the living conditions of the people in Asia, the Middle East, in Africa. I’ve seen the squalor and the lack of the very basic necessities of life. When you see the things I have seen, it genuinely makes you appreciate the things we as Americans are blessed to have.

May we never take for granted the blessings we all have to live in the greatest country in the world.

    Happy Independence Day!

    Happy 4th

What’s the best movie to watch about this date? Or even the discovery of America in the 1400’s?

Happy belated 4th to all of you over the pond. Hope you all had an enjoyable one.

Isn't there a politics section of the forum? Would make for some good discussions.

There used to be once upon a time. If you think THESE threads get nasty, it was absolutely bloody in the old PoFo.

I do miss the open discussions however.

Many, many years ago...serving aboard a US Naval ship, I was designated to attend some training onboard a RN ship in Nato. It happened on July 3, 4, etc. The RN had a few different ways to celebrate. The four going on watch gave me their tots. Unfortunately, they did not tell me that this was about 150 (or more) proof, and I drank about 10 ounces of rum. To this day I cannot stand the smell of rum, even in a cake.. Unfortunately, some time later, I had not happened to share that with my newly wed wife. She made me a delightful (according to our friends) rum desert for a celebration. Fortunately, a number of my friends did tell me it was delicious, and they managed to not only eat all of the cake, but also drank all the rum. It was not a 'quiet' birthday party. Next year, we had several fifths of some very good bourbons appear on our birthday table - and it did not at all inhibit the hilarity in the celebration. It did, though, create some good arguments, and worse headaches.
