So, did anyone else watch the big reveal show online yesterday? I watched every second, and came away pleased. It was what I expected it to be, and I got out of it what I figured that I would. Push Square gives a good rundown, with a lot of links, about everything that was talked about here:

    https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/06/round_up_what_was_announced_at_sonys_ps5_games_reveal_event

The games that I'm looking forward to were all pretty likely to be in production, but since we hadn't gotten official confirmation, or seen any footage, it was still exciting.

Horizon: Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart all look exceptional, and I expect all three to maximize what the new console can do. All three seem like they're going to come out at some point in 2021. Sackboy: A Big Adventure looks like it will probably be a good one too, after Little Big Planet 3 was a bit of a bummer. I'm also intrigued by Kena: Bridge of Spirits and Project Athia, and want to see a lot more.

For now, AC Valhalla still looks like the only PS5 game I'm interested in at launch, but that's ok, since it will play all of the PS4 titles as well. That one will likely take up a few months of my time, so no rush.

I've seen some uproar online about new consoles being released this year, and a lack of launch games for those respective systems. However, considering this generation is going to be more backwards compatible then previous launches, I don't really see the point in waiting to let people get their upgrades awhile.

Honestly, I feel that the launch window games for the ps5 look to be a lot stronger than the last two generations. I bought my first ps3 at launch, but didn't own any ps3 games for about six months. I played FF12 and that years PS2 madden because it was backwards compatible. And I held off on buying the ps4 for almost a year until DA:I came out. But ill get the ps5 asap to get AC:V, and then see how things play out from there. Plus of course the ability to play ps4 games is huge, and I'm sure I'll continue to play those too.

@Unlucky 13 So I assume you have your preorder in?

Sadly no. Watched the Youtube show, got excited, and when they said preorders would be go the next day, I got up at 6am and logged onto site after site to see that they were unavailable. Apparently, most of the stores opened the doors that afternoon ahead of time, and the preorders were scooped up in minutes.

So, who knows at this point. I'll keep looking every day to see if more become available. Back when the PS2 came out, I had a preorder, and still didn't get mine until six months after it was released. Worried that history will repeat itself.

Well Walmart had more preorders go up at 8pm last night, and it was communicated that it'd be that time and such. (though they did go early the day before as well)

I have a preorder, so we'll see how that pans out (nothing is guaranteed, as we've all seen orders get cancelled or delayed right?). Getting the disk version of the PS5 was the only real option to me. Yeah, the digital edition is $100 cheaper up front, but no buying used games, or loaned games, or trading in old games. Old school? I guess, but you'll pay more over the life of the PS5 DE as you are locked in to the digital store. Also, you'll need a bigger SSD very quickly as it fills up.

Is this the last generation of consoles with physical media? Quite probably, but I'll ride that horse till the end.

I'm disappointed that several games will be crossgen, like Spider-Man MM and especially Horizon Far West. Much like what happened with Halo Indefinite, uh... Infinite, the nextgen console version will be held back to some degree by having to be on the last gen consoles.

That said, I look forward to my PS4 games playing better on my PS5. No Man's Sky for example will really shine if the load times for hyperspace/portal jumps are cut down to several seconds. Even flying or driving along a planet's surface should be improved as less things pop into existence. Improved PSVR visuals will help with the wait till Sony rolls out PSVR2 (which I'm guessing will be late 2021 or early 2022).

Sony claims that the two different versions of Horizon are built from the ground up seperately. I guess we'll see how true that seems when the time comes. Either way, the new one looks fantastic.

I'm planning on seeing how some of the PS4 games run on the new system as well. However, I was sad but not surprised to learn that the new games are expected to take up about the same amount of space on the PS5 as they currently do on the PS4, so the relatively small hard drive will limit what we can do. I had given up playing ES Online because of how much space it needs, but I guess that won't be getting much better. Too bad.

As far as physical media, I intend to continue buying games that way as long as I can. I just do not trust anyone to keep downloads available for years down the line.

I'm guessing Sony thinks that we'll plug in a portable HD and store our games on it, while keeping the games we are actively playing on the SSD. When you want to play an older game, you transfer it from the HD to the SSD. Not quite as convenient as MS having the slots in the back of their consoles to add another SSD, but way less expensive.

At some point, there will be special SSD expansions sold for the PS5. At this point, there's no word on how big they'll be or what they'll cost. I'll eventually go down that road when the time comes.

Some illustrations to show just how massive the PS5 console is. I think that it should fit into my entertainment centre if I can use the horizontal base. Because there isn't any room on the top.

Wasn't any better for me ordering an Xbox Series X. I tried 6 different websites (some for as long as 30 mins), and was mostly met with cart errors until the inevitable sold out/unavailable.

Yea, I am the only idiot I know who tried and didn't manage to get a preorder in.

One acquaintance I have has 4 pre-orders. He's part of the ****ing problem.

Really infuriating. I was on multiple websites at one time and it didn't even go live when it said on two of them (Best Buy and Amazon). By the time Amazon and Best Buy did, after failing at Walmart, Target, Gamestop, and Microsoft (all of which allowed me to get one in my cart only to ****ing fail at checkout), I had enough time to to continually get errors attempting at those two sites before being met with sold out/unavailable.

That sucks. I'm hoping that with both consoles coming out at the same time, it will spread the demand around, and there will be more available later this year once they're out in stores. Fingers crossed.

At a minimum, the idiots who keep predicting that consoles are dead look really stupid.

Well unfortunately many of the people buying are probably just looking to resell. Meanwhile I actually want two (one for my upstairs setup and one for downstairs setup), and can't even get one.

Its a fair point. I despise the bastards who get them just to jack the price up and sell them online and a profit.

To be honest this generation of consoles just doesnt interest me much. Yeah they will look nice and be powerful, but power and realism arent the issues with gaming right now.

I'll probably stick to my ps4 and skip this gen.

The known lineup of games for the PS5 within the first year or so just blows my socks off. Obviously, we all have our own tastes, but when the PS3 and PS4 came out, they really didn't offer much at first that I cared about at all. But there are a ton of games for the PS5 that I can't wait to get my hands on as soon as I can. I'm also extremely interested in the faster load times and then the details of how all of the minor things will look ans function within the games.

Anything can happen, but Sonys hardware hasn't typically been very buggy.

PS3 wasn't as bad as the Xbox 360 but the hardware was decently buggy.

I know I had to return mine for a factory refund.

One reason I will never buy a console at launch again.

My first ps3 was awesome because it played ps2 games. But it did get a disc stuck inside, and I had to send it away to get it fixed. The second time it happened, they refused to fix it, even if I paid. They were deep into eliminating backwards compatibility at that point with the slim ones.

I've, thankfully, never had a buggy console but I also dont buy at launch so my odds are better.

I think the last systems I got near launch were the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast from my parents lol

It looks like the list of PS4 games that won't work on the PS5 is only ten long, and I've never even heard of most of them.

There always could be, but a bunch of different sites listed the same ones, officially from Sony. This is the list of the ten that are confirmed to NOT work on the PS5:

    https://www.psu.com/news/guide-the-ten-ps4-games-that-dont-work-with-ps5-rated/

And here's a list of titles confirmed that will. Its very long.

    https://www.psu.com/news/every-ps4-game-that-works-on-ps5/

But there could be some obscure ones that got overlooked, certainly. Every game that I own is on the good list. However, this is actually far less of an issue for me than I thought it would be, given that the PS5 release window lineup is so much stronger than the ones for the PS3 And PS4. I likely won't spend as much time replaying older titles as I thought.

No clue. The only game I play that seems to have a weird split is MLB The Show. It takes ages to install. I'm old enough to remember when games had multiple discs and you had to switch between them at certain points, though. I think the last one that I played was the Xenosaga series.

You bet! My first ever console was Pong, with a Sears label on the front. I was five years old, and my neighbors teenager didn't want it anymore, so she gave it to us. We got an Atari 2600 a while later the same way around 1983, and that was our only system until my parents finally got a NES for the holidays in 88.

This is some of the news that I've been waiting for. The PS5 tracks how long you've played every game, and you can check at any point to see the data for any title. And it also apparently will do the same for your PS4 games, although I wonder if that is still true if you play while not connected to the internet. For example, if I put 100 hours into a PS4 game in 2014 while never online, and then deleted the game to create space, does the PS4 still remember that, and then transfer that info to the PSN when I do connect? I guess we'll find out.

It depends on what you want, I guess. What are your priorities?

The graphics should take a pretty sizable jump, but the biggest thing will be the SSD and how fast everything loads, with little to no wait time. It was also revealed this morning that some games will install in about one second. After waiting hours for some PS4 games to install, and even going to bed while I loaded Madden or The Show, that's a huge upgrade.

The PSN apparently works much more quickly for the PS5 than it has for the PS4. I've had the same amount of data that would take a couple of minutes tops on my PC take an hour on the PS4. And that's with the PS4 hard wired and my laptop on WiFi.

Plus there are all sorts of fun added features to the system UI that make things deeper and fun.

I suppose the load times dont really bother me all that much. They seem fast already, not saying faster isnt better but I've never seen it as an issue.

I usually buy/download a new game before finishing the current one, right at the end so I guess faster downloading is way better but it's still never been something I've had issues with.
