Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports Patriots quarterback Cam Newton had some words for Dolphins players, who didn't back down. After New England’s 21-11 win, Newton wrote on Instagram that the Dolphins “tried to snatch my chain and the game.” Miami defensive linemen Shaq Lawson and Raekwon Davis both had similar responses to the post. “We don’t want that weak a– chain,” Lawson wrote. “Man ain’t nobody want your fake a– chain s— was weak anyway,” Davis agreed. Newton and Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins exchanged words on the field after the game. That led to some pointing and shoving, and Wilkins then grabbed Newton by the collar area. You could see Newton scrambling to make sure he still had his chain afterword. In an appearance on WEEI Monday morning, Newton said the chain represents his children and their birthstones. Newton was also asked how Bill Belichick responded to the incident. The skirmish reminded us of a past chain-yanking incident in the NFL, though it didn’t quite escalate to that level. The important thing for Newton was that the Patriots got the win. Whether it was his fault or not, Belichick undoubtedly spoke with him about avoiding that type of conflict.
Newton doesnt back down from those kind of things. He only backs away when he sees a live ball on the ground with a championship on the line. But there are many videos out there of Newton getting into it with many guys in the NFL. I guess when youre built like superman you can do those kind of things.
I believe he THINKS they wanted his chain. I dont believe anyone tried to snatch it. First thing as a HC I'd do with a guy who was snatching chains on the field is bench him, the second thing I'd do is talk to the GM about cutting/trading the player(s) I cant imagine any HC being proud his guys snatched a chain.
I thought that whole exchange was pretty hysterical...watching it live I had no idea what Cam was flipping out about. He's usually such a mellow, laid back guy that it didn't make a lot of sense to me- I figured someone took a low blow at him or something. Cam runs his mouth a lot (mostly in fun) but you'll rarely see him snap like that. Leave it to Miami to try and steal a player's gold chain on national TV....LMAO!
Philbin had a rule against that. I remember him telling a player to take off his watch on hard knocks lol im shocked belichick doesnt have that kind of policy but hes trying to come off as a more loose kind of guy this season to try to repair the bad guy reputation Brady’s PR team has been dishing at him.
Wearing jewelry in a football game seems childish. Whatever happens probably should have happened. Dez Bryant twice lost diamond earrings that were estimated to be valued at $50K. SMH. If you didn't learn the lesson the first time, you deserve to lose it the second. A security guard found both of Bryant's studs.
