NFL Network's Michael Giardi reports teams have called the Dolphins about Josh Rosen.
The Dolphins are reportedly "in no hurry to trade him." Rosen's trade value has to be close to nonexistent at this point even with his miniscule cap hits. He couldn't beat Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job in Miami last season and has been a well below-average passer whenever he's been on the field (career 5.7 yards per attempt with 12 TDs and 19 INTs). Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reported in February that it's "likely" that Rosen remains on the team, but he'll probably serve as the team's No. 3 quarterback behind Fitzpatrick and Tua Tagovailoa in 2020.

    From PFT:

The Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa fifth overall. They still have Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has made it clear he wants to start. So where does that leave Josh Rosen? That’s apparently the same thing some teams wonder.

Michael Giardi of NFL Media reports the Dolphins have received calls about Rosen’s availability. Giardi adds that Miami is in “no hurry” to deal Rosen. It’s more likely the Dolphins haven’t received an offer to their liking. The Dolphins also have Jake Rudock in their quarterbacks room.

Rosen, 23, has yet to find a home after two seasons in the NFL. The Cardinals made him the 10th overall choice in 2018 but traded him to the Dolphins for a second-round choice a year ago after Arizona drafted Kyler Murray No. 1 overall.

The Dolphins now have Tagovailoa as their quarterback of the future, so Rosen’s future obviously is elsewhere.

Rosen has gone 3-13 as a starter, passing for 2,845 yards with 12 touchdowns and 19 interceptions while playing for two of the worst teams in the NFL over the past two seasons.

I hope they don't make any snap judgements and trade him for nothing. His contract is on the cheap just keep him. Nothing wrong with having 2 young QB's on the roster.

It was worth a try to see if he could be salvaged. If we could get a 4th or even a 5th I say you take it.

With our luck we'll trade Rosen to the Titans to be their backup QB and he will pull a "Tannehill" once he gets on the field.

I wholeheartedly disagree. This is likely Fitzpatrick's last year and Rosen is the ideal backup at $2M a year. Develop the kid for a few more seasons and then decide what to do with him...there is zero rush to recover that late 2nd round investment (which was essentially free in the first place due to a trade).

The only way you let Rosen walk today is if it's a Minkah-type situation where he wants a chance to start in 2020 (which won't happen anywhere). But if the kid wants out, then a trade makes sense out of courtesy. Otherwise, he's a Dolphin until he's not.

If we don’t keep three qbs on the active roster then I would think he requests a trade.

I agree. We are talking QB here, so I don't think we should rush to get a late-round pick either. Rosen has the physical tools. It's probably the processing and reading defenses that have been tripping him up. Tua is my guy, but I want to see what Rosen can do with Gailey and his system. Maybe it will come easier for him and he can play naturally and not overthink things too much. Down the road when Fitzpatrick hangs up his cleats we might be happy to have Rosen around.

Most here probably don’t remember when it was the back-up quarterback was the holder for field goal attempts and point after TD tries. I never understood why teams abandoned that and went to the punter being the holder.

At least with a quarterback on the field, you always had additional options instead of just kicking the ball. I say keep Rosen, develop and bring the QB back on kicking plays.

The problem with keeping Rosen is that, unless Tua is hurt, then Rosen can't -- and shouldn't -- get anywhere near enough reps in practices and games to develop in such a way that he has more value in the future (when he's older) than he has now. And I don't think he should be the player the Dolphins have in reserve in the event Tua is injured or has trouble regaining his form after his past injury.

So in my opinion you trade him now and salvage what you can for him. Perhaps a bidding war between two or three teams could get the compensation up to a fourth-rounder, and I'd jump all over that.

I sincerely doubt if any team has offered anything more than a conditional 7th round pick for him. The other teams are just ringing to see if the Dolphins are willing to sell him for a fire sale price. Just because other teams are ringing doesn’t mean any team is genuinely interested in offering substantive compensation because they see Rosen as their QB of the future.

See which teams lose a QB to injury and if they are willing to give up something. At this moment, there is no way we are getting anything of value like Pauly said. 6th round flier at most, most likely a 7th.

If they trade him that means the dolphins are confident that Tua is healthy enough to come in relief of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Right now its pointless to trade him away.. keep all three..

Agreed. I would guess that if anybody were offering a 4th or better they'd consider it. They may or may not take it at this point before camp, but it would be a consideration. If they did take it then you know they have zero belief that he'd ever develop. At this point there's still hope he can show better in a simplified offense. (BTW if he doesn't learn this offense we should probably stop calling him 'smart' at least in relation to football. Reality is that he has struggled to pick up several offenses in college and the pros).

Now if teams are offering a player then that's different. Sometimes teams at this point are looking to see if you're willing to swap problems or disappointments. Obviously there's the variable of whether Miami likes the other team's problem. But for Miami, Rosen isn't really a problem. He's cheap and provides depth and has at least some small hope of development. Some of the same personality traits that don't make him a leader also don't make him a problem. He's just a guy who blends into the background behind Fitz and Tua. As long as he's putting in the work, which he seems to be, and not complaining, which I haven't heard any, there's no urgency on Miami's end.

I would think the offer would be more than a 7th

You do not even waste someone's time calling them to take a 7th for a player that makes nothing and potentially will be relied on if Tua is not cleared to play this season.

There is no downside to keeping Rosen... So there is no chance a 7th rounder is being discussed

So you think we’re gonna keep 3 qbs on the active roster? Cause if not what are the alternatives to keeping him?

Either redshirt Tua and put him on IR.

Rosen to the practice squad?? Nope, that ain’t happening..

Keep three qbs active for the sake of pure development reasons.

    It’s either #1 or #3

    Its #3

I dont agree with the notion of sitting Tua the entire year if he is 100% unless we are somehow in playoff contention and the games matter.

It is physically impossible to heal beyond 100% and he needs to see some game situations even if he isnt starting at any point.

It remains to be seen if there's a pre-season or, anything resembling a normal regular season. If so, give Rosen the majority of the snaps in pre-season to raise his stock in case another team loses a QB. Let Tua sit for the first half of the regular season and learn while the o-line gels. Give Tua mop-up opportunities in the second half of the season. No reason to rush him in. Best case, we trade Rosen to a QB needy team for multiple draft picks or, Rosen backs up Tua after Fitz retires. It would be stupid to give him away.

I don't think the guys running the team are going to be comfortable giving Rosen snaps that their QB of the future -- the one their jobs are largely riding on -- could be taking, so that Rosen's stock rises from what's probably currently a sixth-round pick to what could likely be no higher than a fourth-round pick, neither of which is likely to net a future starter. Surely the team isn't going to let the speed of Tua's development hinge on the possibility of acquiring a mere fourth-round pick for the guy who's taking his reps.

That was certainly the Ron Wolf strategy.

I wouldn't mind seeing Fitz somewhat replicate what Don Strock did when we drafted Marino. Strock hung around as Marino's back-up and mentor for about 3 years. And nowadays QBs are playing longer than in Strock's day.

It is interesting that a talented highly touted first round pick like Rosen was thrown to the Wolves last year on the worst O line in football.. and when he got pummeled people said he was trash because of it.

Now we have people wanting to sit Tua until the O line gels so he has time to throw and will be protected.

Not picking on you specifically. I have seen this sentiment made over and over.

People forget that early last year Fitz' numbers were worse than Rosen's Yes the O line was that bad.

The O line play was dramatically improved for Fitz' second stint as starter last season.

I completely agree- we need apples to apples comparisons of the three quarterbacks in a real offense. Writing off Rosen is short-sighted and I personally think Arizona made a mistake of trading him after basically paying his entire contract. Miami shouldn't make the same mistake since it could actually be Rosen that's our QB of the future.

Why bet only on one horse when you have two in the race? We definitely need to carry three active QB's on the roster since we know Fitzpatrick will retire within the next few years.

I do not see Fitz playing more than 2 years max. This is his last season with Miami.

And honestly... If Rosen looks good in Camp/Preseason... I could see Miami trading Fitz away to a team that had a QB injury and needed a quality starter.

The problem with Rosen has always been inconsistent accuracy and too many late throws. It was a problem in college, AZ and in Miami. You can see that on film and that's independent of OL play or WRs. The supporting cast argument matters to people who scout by stats, but using film you see the issues Rosen has always had.

I was adamant that Rosen should not start last season b/c he has shown himself to be a guy who does not process or pick up systems quickly (hence the late throws). I've always argued that every rookie QB should sit for a year. Some can overcome it and some can't, but there's never any harm in sitting. I didn't believe that Rosen was one of those who could overcome it. I felt that his best chance for success was to have him sit and absorb for a long time. (I actually think Tua is one that could overcome it, but there's no reason to rush him and add risk). Sitting would increase the number of times Rosen would know what to do and be able to throw in rhythm. When he does that his arm talent shines and he looks good. IMO that's why so many had him rated so highly and why he was over-drafted.

I don't agree that the OL play improved much throughout the year. IMO Fitz adjusted. The offense improved b/c Fitz got more passes out on time. I think the clearest comparison was the Washington game where you got to see Rosen and Fitz with the same supporting cast against the same defense. It was a night and day improvement.

It is an interesting argument that Fitz being a veteran was able to make adjustments to his game easier than Rosen to get the football out faster to make up for the ****ty line.

Also I have for years advocated sitting rookie QB's teach them your system... Coach them up in practice. Work on footwork and delivery..... When they step on the field they are highly polished and have a better chance of success.

Sadly there is so much pressure to play because of rookie contracts teams only have a QB for a few years on the cheap. They are not going to waste one of those cheap years sitting the player on the bench

I think if anything Rosen benefitted from failing last season. He got to work on his game and to learn the system. The Miami coaches praised Rosen for his hard work and said several times that they could see a marked improvement in his game and approach. Sitting and learning from a guy like Fitz had to be beneficial for him.

Rosen fans kept pushing for Rosen to start, but IMO it was a no-win situation for him. He simply wasn't ready. It was embarrassingly obvious when he couldn't pick out the Mike during the broadcast. He'll have a new system to learn again this season. Now this is clearly Fitz' team so there will be no back and forth unless he's injured so hopefully Rosen will get to sit the rest of the year once pre-season is over. I've even seen a post from a Rosen fan hoping to trade Fitz and start Rosen. That is just ridiculous unless you're hoping for Rosen to fail again. Like I said last season, the best thing for Rosen would be for him to sit and learn.

I always thought that was the advantage Miami had this year and why it was the best fit for Tua. Flores is not under pressure to get the rookie QB on the field. Ross pushed to get Rosen out there last year when, according to reports, the coaches felt he wasn't ready. Hopefully Ross learned to trust his coaches. With Tua you also have the injury cloud. I hope that Ross and everybody on the Dolphins understands that putting Tua out there too soon is far worse than having him sit too long. This is about the next 10 years not the next 3 months.

It seems that Tua's recovery is going exceptionally well (he has always been one to recover quickly, before the hip injury I believe he had only missed 1 game in his college career) so he'll probably be medically cleared sooner rather than later, but IMO it's not about him getting medically cleared or giving Miami the best chance to win right now. It's about giving Miami the best chance to win for the next 10 years. I want to hear that Tua looks like the best QB in practice (like he reportedly did his freshman year yet still sat until the championship game). Like at Alabama, you had a confident coach who went with the veteran he trusted even though the young QB looked better in practice for almost the whole year. In one of my fantasies Fitz and Miami would play well all year and unexpectedly end up in the SB where Tua would replace a struggling Fitz in the second half and pull out the comeback win.

I think the time Flores and coaches have had to work with Rosen last year when he was not starting will help him tremendously. Fitz has played for Gailey before so he has that advantage... But Gailey was hired back in December. So Rosen has had plenty of time to get film and study books from coaches. Rosen has a working relationship with Fitz... He has had this time to learn from him also.

Rosen will not be going in as blind and unprepared this year.

For the record I would like to see Rosen out there to see if there is any improvement. I do not want the coaches to just play him. Play him only if he has earned it.

And honestly I think there is no way Flores lets him play unless he works his *** off and earns it. Not even in pre-season. Flores is not giving anyone anything they have not earned.

I definitely think Tua should sit, strengthen and learn for this coming season. We need to first get him another thorough examination down in Miami, but either way, I definitely think he should sit for awhile. Even if he is medically cleared, it would still be best to sit him and let him learn and get stronger. Fitz played well last season and, imo, deserves the chance to start and should start. He's a great guy to learn behind. There are so many nuances to the pro game compared to college. Fitz is a smart guy and a cool guy. Fitz knows Gailey's system. IMO, it's a perfect situation for Tua. The new OL guys will need to time to gel. There's just so many good reasons for him to take some time and gradually work his way in.

The thing is that IMO there is absolutely no substitute for game experience.

In practice noone is trying to take your head off as you roll on a bootleg. Noone is trying to lay you on on your back as the QB.

There are tons of practice warriors who tear it up and fade when they hit the field.

Imo even if he isnt starting I'd like him to at least see some game time as the season wears on.

    This is a fair point.

However not all game experience is equal... On a great team late in a game when you have a lead giving a QB snaps is different than the pressure of throwing a green as piss kid out there to the wolves on a ****ty team where he will take a beating trying to learn a new offense

The problem with the last 6 or 7 games is that Fitz was the absolute leader of the team... There was no way Rosen was going to start no matter what he showed in practice or how much he impressed coaches in the film room.

The team gelled around Fitzmagic... The defense started gelling at the same time the offense started gelling.

I posted this last week somewhere else... The last 6 games the defense gave up 20 points... The previous games 37! So they basically cut it in half.

We had a positive point differential of 29 for the last 6 games.

When you have a dramatic turn around like that where every player on the roster believes and believes in the coach... You do not consider putting the kid in to get some experience.

At the time I was super pissed off because I wanted the Dolphins to have the #1 pick... Those late season victories in my mind were hurting us more than helping us. We ended up with Tua anyways so now Flores looks like a mastermind. This is a hard working team that loves the coach and believes in the system. This is a team that from the starting gate this year will compete and win. Last season we were the worst team in the NFL and one of the worst teams in the last decade... We were an embarrassment... losing games 43-0

Flores coached up many players and got them to play the best football of their lives.. He used players differently and put them in situations where they could be successful.. We have not had that sort of coach in Miami in 25 years.
