That is true, but then again, that is a very specific genre and subgenres.

Its what I play. And with the next Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age games years off, I'll take what I can get until then!

Final Fantasy XV is still getting content updates. Honestly I might prefer that over ACRPG.

I intend to check out all that FF15 has to offer when I get my new internet connection soon. I actually have a pretty deep backlog between updates and DLC with that one, AC Origins, Horizon Zero Dawn, and a handful of others that I'm going to check out.

Good piece about features that used to be in AC games that no longer are. I always loved the city/community development aspects of a few of them. I love that when its part of any game, and will spend all the time and in game currency I have available on it.

The game itself looks awesome, but I'll be getting it later.

I have to hand it to Ubisoft, they have really taken things to an entirely new level with Origins. A few years ago, who would have thought that they would be the maker of the best action RPG in a several year span?

The game is enormous, and extremely well done. It takes everything that they've ever done well with the series (with the exception of the modern era and precursor race ideas) and blends it with a game very similar to The Witcher 3 in scope and content. I'm 43 hours in, and I feel like I'm still just scratching the surface. I've only visited about a third of the map, and of the places I've been, I've only really explored about a quarter of those.

I've spent the last ten hours on this tiny, optional island in the corner of the map, where I found one side quest that led me to several more, with some good characters and a story of its own. I absolutely love that sort of thing. Its the best part of video games.

I have a lot to do, but so far the game gets a 10/10 from me. If you play it, do so as Kasandra, the female character. She really feels like the intended hero, and is really well done.

AC Valhalla has been revealed as the newest entry into the series. It has the Viking setting that has been rumored for a long time, and the trailer will be revealed tonight, April 30th. Hopefully we'll have a lot more info soon.

-The trailer is pretty awesome, but doesn't show any game play yet.

-The game is planned to be a launch title for the new consoles. If there are PS5's available to be purchased, this has locked me in as a day one upgrader. On the flip side, if I can't get my hands on a PS5, I'll probably wait on this title until I can. Either way, I likely won't be buying it on the PS4.

-The player will control a character named Eivor, who can be either male or female. You will be able to customize hair, tattoos and war paint, along with the long boat, which I presume will be similar to what you could do with the ship in Odyssey. There are conflicting reports as to whether there will be more naval combat or not.

-The player will have a raven instead of an eagle, but it will function mostly in the same way.

-The modern day story will continue, with Layla Hassan as the character in that section for the third straight game.

-The game will encourage players to explore to uncover more content that's not obvious.

-The player will have to make choices at points in the game that effect how the story plays out and what happens with the game's world

-There will be a settlement of some kind that you can build and expand

I thought it was "slightly" too large...I noticed by the end of the game I had yet to hit many of the smaller islands around the perimeter. I didn't use my boat a ton either because the quests would send you sailing from one side of the map to the other....or you could hop to a teleport point, run to a dock, and summon your ship with the NPC on-board. I tried to play in 60 minute spurts so traveling for 20 minutes just didn't happen very often.

However, I wouldn't say the map was to big at all....I'd be okay with it being even bigger since what made the game great for me was exploring in general. What I hated was the quests that have you run 500 yards in three different directions, only to finish that 15 minutes of running to have to move another 1500 to get another triple-part delivery quest. I really wanted the option on some quests to threaten them to stop wasting my time and do what I need...

Even at the end of my NG+ playthrough, after spending over 250 hours with the game, I never got bored, and never ran out of things to do or to explore. The game's world is so immersive, and just has stuff everywhere! Its really the template that I hope other RPGs follow on the next generation of consoles. The amazing amount of data that they crammed into it just makes a lot of other games seem pathetic now. I really want Ubisoft to keep pushing the envelope, and force the other developers to follow suit.

I always liked the AC series from the start. But now that they've transformed it into the biggest, most awesome continuing RPG series out there, I'm flat out in love.

Yeah I think we're going to philosophically differ on this, as I believe the series has become sort of a cynical bastardization of itself since its peak. For background, I've played AC1, AC2 (and associated entries), AC: Unity, and AC: Origins. For further background, I believe AC: Brotherhood was its peak and I'll be speaking with rest of my post through the lens of Origins as opposed to Odyssey, so correct me if I'm overtly wrong on anything that might be in the latest title.

The series now is more intent on chasing the open world approach of The Witcher 3, featuring a map lush with "?" marks that, after a while, feel like the same tasks over and over again, just in different locales. Except with The Witcher 3, there's a great deal of unexplored or unfamiliar lore that is deftly fleshed out throughout its sidequests and exploratory sections. Sometimes, there's not, and that gets boring.

The latest ACs have just been mining notable periods of history because it lazily provides a framework and setting from which to plaster another map full of "?" marks so they can say they have a 60+ hour game. Oh and of course, an open world provides a better format for further monetization.

Most of it ends up pretty boring because we know plenty about the Egyptians, Greek and Roman mythology, and now Norse mythology. They've been done to death. Now, they're on the coattails of shows like Vikings and Game of Thrones, and previous games like God of War. This is the developer that, IIRC, refuses to do an Eastern setting for an Assassin's Creed title, meanwhile developing titles in periods that have all been so overused and overexposed. All of this while filling their open worlds with more fantasy elements (Medusas, etc.), instead of the political elements that were central to the history of assassinations in the first place, and which made the earlier entries so interesting.

You could argue that the animus aspect of the story keeps the canvas wide open but I've never given a **** about it, and actually can't stand the parts of the game where they take you out of it.

I guess I just much prefer the entries where you're an actual assassin weaving covertly through a crowded cities and condensed maps than a running a horse over a wide open map, and then busting out a 2H axe when the situation gets hairy and you've blown your cover (if people actually play these games stealthily anymore).

In other words, I think it's lost it's own way to sate more and more gamers. We need an open world! We need RPG elements! Set the next one in this setting because people responded well to X and Y! Let's have limited-time missions so people keep coming back to spend in MTX!

It's not my place to tell Ubisoft which game they should make because they're trying to make as much money as they can. They just lost me along the way. I just don't really feel like an assassin in an Assassin's Creed game anymore, if that makes any sense.

I understand where you're coming from. As you said, we just have a different preference. I've played all of the mainline titles too. I can still remember watching a special on G4 back in the day where they previewed the first one, and I thought how cool it looked. They've always been fun. But starting with AC3, back in 2012, I felt that they sort of ran out of ideas and jumped the shark with the American setting, and then Black Flag. While I enjoyed the modern day aspects of the games still, the historical ones were pretty lame.

I felt that Unity was a weird title that might have actually ended the series. It seemed thrown together with no real direction. Syndicate was a definate improvement, and it was clean and tight, though small. But again, it felt like more of the same, and perhaps they had done all that they could with the traditional model.

Then Origins came along, and it was wonderful. And Odyssey just took that and made it more awesome in every possible way. Ss you said, its a Witcher 3 clone in a lot of ways, but that is specifically what I want. I love it, I can't get enough, and I badly, badly wish that there were more games like it around, because I'd play them!

As far as other titles with similar settings, I don't know what all is out there to be had. I've never played another game set in Egypt. I don't think I've ever played another game set in Greece. And I know that I've never played a game in the Viking setting/Norse mythology, so I'm very much looking forward to it.

For sure, but then don't be an ******* and dismiss the Japanese culture and setting claiming it's been done to death. Funny thing is, Egypt was denounced too in this statement. Guess the potential glow of the coffers got the better of Ubisoft on that one.

I wish that Ubisoft would do an Asian setting too. They seem very determined not too, for whatever reason. Broadly speaking, Western games seem to almost never be set in East Asia. I wonder if there's some sort of unspoken rule in the gaming industry regarding this.

Twenty years ago I started playing MMO's with Dark Age of Camelot, which was probably 5x the size of Odyssey. That was multiplayer so it had to be huge, but a lot of the time it was farming solo/duo and the amount of options of areas to explore was a big part of what made me fall in love with those types of games. So I completely agree....bigger maps are always better and they did a god job of keeping it interesting with quests, bounties, clan members, etc...it made every area relevant since you didn't know what you'd find.

Well, huge maps are almost always better than small ones. But its not just the scale. I mean, FF15 has a giant map that takes ages to get across, but its mostly a vast, open, empty desert. Its not even full of enemies to fight, let alone NPCs and quests, and things that you can interact with.

I have no idea how many different towns and cities are in Odyssey. It just totally crushes any other game I've ever played in that regard. And the various caves and dungeons are similar, but all unique as well. Combine that with the ability to climb onto or over almost anything, and its just spectacular. The amount of different things to interact with is astronomical.

It is interesting to me how many games are like Grand Theft Auto 3. It is amazing how influential that game has been.

One thing I will never get sick of is going to a "camp" and killing/knocking out everyone there. I loved it in Far Cry. I loved it in Spider-Man on PS4. I love it now as I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn. Especially with HZD and Far Cry how the area changes after.

I LOVE doing something in an area and the area changes because of my action. Just makes the world feel more, "Lived in". Shadow of War did a great job of this.

I can see how all games are starting to feel the same. Either Doom mixed with GTA3 or Assassins Creed mixed with GTA3. They are still fun though.

In both HZD and Odyssey, I enjoy using my bow to just snipe all of the enemies in a zone before I ever set foot into it. Clear it out, and then go in and collect the loot.

Amazon allowed me to alter my shopping list copy of AC Valhalla from PS4 to PS5. It isn't letting me do that with any other title that I have in there, so I'm suspecting that they're pretty confident that the PS5 version will actually be a launch title.

Valhalla will take up 45g of space on both the PS4 and the PS5. That's almost exactly the same as the last two, so no big surprises, but still good to know, given the limited storage capacity of the PS5.
