I love this move. Perfect compliment to our draft. https://www.miamidolphins.com/news/matt-breida-trade-nfl-draft-san-francisco-49ers
I have been hoping for this for months! So psyched. Honestly, I love this move more than any of our picks.
That and he had some fumbling issues towards the end of last year that got him in Shanny's doghouse. Great guy, great story and he's a talent for sure. Just seem to be always nicked and banged up. And then once Mostert ascended, he barely got on the field. But in a rotation, he can be a highly effective player. He should do well for you guys as long as you don't try and make him the feature back.
I honestly think that in the run game, he's every bit as good as Reggie Bush was at his best. Just such an exciting guy. Big play waiting to happen. Especially if you wear out the defense all game long.
And with this move I now have 3 Miami RBs on my Dynasty team. I don't know if thats a good thing or not...
I think that the Fins will easily be the most improved rushing team in the league this coming season. I mean, when you aren't only dead last, but flirt with being the worst ever, then there's nowhere to go but up. We had 1156 last season, and I think we'll be over 1800 in 2020. 1806 was average last year.
I had forgotten about the fumbles, but yeah...you're right. And, you're also right in he's at his best when he's not leaned on to carry a heavy workload. That's why we got Howard.
I say give them each 10 to 15 carries a game. Be smart about the situation, ride the hot hand, and take it to the opposition.
I definitely hope they make a commitment to establish the running game this year. TOP is huge in keeping your D fresh. Not to mention how it opens up the passing game.
Don’t forget about ballage. If he can even begin to show signs of his college dominance at ASU he will become our workhorse. I don’t put much stock in Howard anymore. I hope he still has some of it left.
Ballage?! LOL!! Howard is proven back who has shown he can handle lead back duties. He may not be flashy, but he'll get you 3-4 yards consistently and then he'll pop one off every now and again for 20-30 yards. Last season not withstanding he's also been very durable. He was brought in to be lead dog. Brieda now gives us a pass catching/COP back. Gaskin and Laird are depth. Ballage will be fighting for a roster spot.
In terms of rushing yards per game, the biggest ever change was with NE from 1975 to 1976 where they gained 78.79 more rushing yards per game than the previous year (1845 rushing yards in 1975 and 2948 rushing yards in 1976). If you restrict it to post-1978 with 16 games per season, the biggest ever change was with Washington from 2011 to 2012 where they gained 68.44 more rushing yards per game than the previous year (1614 rushing yards in 2011 and 2709 rushing yards in 2012). The best Miami has done is from 2001 to 2002 with an increase of 52.38 rushing yards per game (1664 rushing yards in 2001 to 2502 rushing yards in 2002). At least that's what a hastily written code spits out lol (hoping there's no coding error.. but it does look right when I glance through things).
He played in all 38 games in college and he's missed five games in three years on the NFL level, I think labeling him as injury prone is a reach.
Maybe not 'injury prone' but he has been slowed or hampered by nagging injuries for stretches of games every year since he came into the league. He was the 2nd string RB his rookie year, behind Hyde who was the bell-cow and gobbled up most of the carries that year. He did sustain some type of shoulder injury that year too if I remember correctly and was limited with his carries for a time. He was supposed the split carries with McKinnon his second year but McKinnon tore his ACL in TC and was done for the year. So they had to lean on him as the primary ball carrier and that last a couple of games until he sustained a high ankle sprain and that nagged him all year. Ended up signing Alfred Morris off the street because of this, as he was on a pitch count every game from like Week 3 on. The ankle improved towards the end of the year and he looked better late in the season. Last year it was supposed to be him and Coleman splitting the carries but again, he sustained an ankle injury during the first Rams game and he gave Mostert a chance to steal some carries...and the rest is history. So while you right, "injury-prone" might not be the best description, he has to be better at letting nagging injuries affect his availability. And subsequently, his production...
I really am trying hard to forget that bum. College dominance? He peaked at 669 rushing yards...in what world is that dominance?
Seems like a no brainer for a 5th rounder. With this trade, we addressed every major need we had coming into this draft. Not to say we don’t have more to go but this was a good step forward.
Ballage is apparently a favorite of our RB coach and is a practice hero, it just doesn't translate to games. But those guys often seem to stick around. Would not be surprised to see him get one more shot, but also won't be shocked to see him cut. I think Howard will clearly be the meat and potatoes guy, with Breida as the versatile, pass-catching back, third down guy. After that, just let guys compete and see who comes out. If any of these guys are major contributors in 2021 I'd be mildly surprised.
I think he makes the team as the third running back... honestly though if Howard and Breida are healthy, there is absolutely no reason to see Ballage get more than 3 snaps a game.. i hate when teams use all three running backs, i am a true believer of letting the RB1 get 20 plus touches so that he can find rhythm and get stronger as the game goes on..
Agreed. Being out on the west coast and hearing a ton of SF news, Breida has been the guy expected to break out for a couple years now. All the talent in the world, but his biggest issue has been availability and ability to play through his assorted nicks and scrapes.
I never understood Studsville's infatuation. It started to make me hope Flores would make a change there. I'm curious to see the impact Gailey has on the RB rotation. I get the impression O'Shea deferred quite a bit. Gailey as a much more seasoned guy may do much less of that.
