Saw this on The Miami Herald, not sure if it's legit or not but seemed worth mentioning. He also said we're looking hard at Tua and Herbert...and so are the Chargers. They're halfway expecting them to jump us to pick #4 overall.
The reason I don't want to trade up for Burrow is because I can't help but shake the feeling the Bengals are going to ask for a King's ransom.
Agree...and I'd hate to see their HC get that kind of a haul...then again, it may be fun to watch him squander it.
They have no reason not to set a record breaking haul. Their worst-case scenario is to simply draft him. That said, this rumor has been around for months now. Not sure I really buy it unless Ross is pushing super hard for it.
When the Jets went from 6 to 3 a couple years ago it cost him three second round picks. Id imagine the jump from 5 to 1 will cost us a first and a second and another second
I think it would be more likely to take three 1st rounders....two this season and one next year. Even then though, they may ask for more.
A lot depends on how much Burrow pushes back on being drafted by the Bengals. If he is actively saying he will not sign with them, that could push the asking price down. By down, I'd expect #5, #18, and a second rounder to get it done. I'm concerned about Burrow being able to make all the NFL throws given his average arm strength, but he does seem to have that 'it' factor and in the right offense he'd be just fine. Plus no injury history to speak of. Getting Tua at #5 and keeping those extra picks is also an attractive option. I'm glad I don't have to make the call on this, but I'm certainly prepared to complain if it doesn't work out for Miami.
I like Burrow but He is not a prospect I am trading up for.. he is very much a prospect that you will either hit or miss. I still think the quarterback with the best chance of a lengthy career is Herbert, whether that means he will be a star or career journeyman, that I dont know.. if Trevor Lawrence was available on this draft ill trade all my first rounders and second round picks to #1. But not for Burrow..
Burrow would be third, behind Tua and Herbert for me, so I'd say no, especially if we have to give up the farm to get there. I'm just very wary of so-called 'one season wonders'. I've seen these type of players command big money transfers in soccerball over here and they very rarely live up to the hype and expectations.
It comes down to what we have to pay. If they believe Burrow has the best chance to be a franchise QB, you trade 5, 18 and one of our 2nd rounders, it’s worth the risk. If we have to give up more than 2 first rounders then I think you stay put and take a QB at 5 or 18 and go BPA with the other pick. IF they trade 3+ first rounders for #1 and don’t get it right, Grier needs to be gone.
I know the Bengals are a bit of a joke but 2's won't get us up to the no.1 pick, this isn't the Texans we're dealing with. I think it's a minimum of all 1st round picks from this year, so who is comfortable giving that up for Burrow?
Yeah i'm sure they're going to leak this information before the draft..I guess i can go ahead and put Armando on the ignore list who ever he is anyway.
I'd consider it depending on price. Herbert is my #1 QB but Burrow is my #2....so if the team has that flip flopped, they should go after who they like.
If Burrow doesn't want to play for Cinci then he needs to go public. So far, he has been clear that he isn't pulling an Eli. This theory just seems wish fulfillment.
Does he necessarily have to though? If I were the Bengals and he felt that way, I'd rather work on a trade behind the scenes that doesnt embarrass my franchise, and on the side of Burrow he could very well not want to develop the drama of a holdout demand on his reputation. I actually think it's better for both sides to handle it privately.
I honestly dont think it matters. The public knows we need a QB, the world knows we need a QB, and everyone dismisses everything as a smokescreen. Does releasing a plan people expect anyway and others wont believe matter that much? Could just be to cause confusion.
I suppose the buy off, in this case, isn't Burrow V Tua/Herbert/Love but more Burrow V the 3 players you'd draft in the first round this year instead of Burrow if you didn't trade up. So using the latest mock draft that I've had as an example Burrow V Tua/Chaisson/Jones.
It doesn't have to be about leverage if both sides agree to a solution. Life doesnt have to be about getting an advantage on everyone you deal with.
If Burrow outright says he isn't going to go to the Bengals, does that add character questions to Burrow for some teams?
No, because it's a terrible organization with a cheap owner. This isn't "life" - it's a highly specific and specialized situation. The only leverage a player has in this case is to refuse to play. The Bengals hold the majority of the cards here, not Burrow. His only real option is to go nuclear - we saw it with Elway and with Eli, they were both very clear about what they wanted. There is really no incentive for Burrow to keep it quiet to benefit a team he has no intention of playing for. If he is sure that he will not play for Cinci, then make it public so the onus is on them to make the trade. Otherwise he runs the risk of the Bengals putting on a show without really doing anything to make it happen. Ultimately, I believe this idea that Burrow doesn't want to play for Cinci is just a fantasy pro-Burrow fans have and isn't based in reality.
You have no idea how many times the situation I have described may or may not have played out. The thing about keeping things private is that they dont leak and you never know. Eli had to because SD was going to draft him anyway. Had they met and decided a trade was mutually beneficial it wouldnt have been necessary. FWIW I'm not saying Burrow doesn't want to be a Bengal. I'm saying his lack of public crying doesnt mean that he is okay with it.
Smokescreen. If you build and coach a world class o-line then most any QB in this year's draft will outplay Burrow on the Bengals.
But what is the probability of assembling a world-class offensive line, keeping it healthy, and keeping it intact at its level of play amidst free agency, retirement, and the expected decline in players' performance? We're talking about a unit of five players here, the largest unit on the field. Building a world-class offensive line isn't anything any team should expect to do and plan its personnel moves around. Every team should plan its personnel moves around having only an average offensive line, since an average offensive line is what every team in the league is most likely to have.
One reason why I'd put a little more stock into this report is because of how active the FO is being in free agency. Which, to me could indicate they are planning to part with some draft capital. Hope I'm wrong about that, but it's just my gut. If it were me I'd stay put at #5 and take the BPA with an emphasis on the QB position. If Tua falls, I'd grab him. If not, weigh Herbert (assuming he's still available) against an edge guy or a lineman. Be judicious with all those high round draft picks. Don't just give 'em away!
That's not what's happening when you simply make the assessment of the kind of quarterback play you need as a function of expected offensive line play.
Burrow to me is a guy who either will become a superstar or will be out of the league in a few short years. I dont think there’s an inbetween for him. His potential is very high, and he’s got the stuff to make him special. But failure to be anything short of great will hit him hard. Same goes for Baker Mayfield if he dont get his **** together. They have strong characters, and if this level doesnt work out for them, they wont have the right attitude to be a backup quarterback. herbert has all the tools, im not sure if he has that killer inside him but i do know he has all the tools like Tannehill does, to have a long career in the NFL. Trevor Lawrence next season will be labeled a once in a generation prospect. He’s got the total package and is almost as cant miss as it gets. The fact that he has to play one more season of college football is ridiculous to me, he is man amongst children at this point.
Our picks are the only way to unlock our future. Trading them all for one of these guys will ultimately set us back. Draft at 5. Keep our picks. Maybe even trade back. There is no "sure thing" in the top 5...
You are essentially asking me to prove a negative based on nothing but pure speculation. I'll stick with my points. I think this is wish fulfillment by people who love Burrow without much bearing in reality. Maybe I am wrong, maybe not.
I'm not asking you to prove a negative point, if it came across that way, unintended. My point was that I cant prove a negative point, but it doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I find it much more beneficial for both sides to keep it under wraps if possible, where the force play happens when the team wants to exert pressure and take you regardless. I have no idea how he feels about playing there. I'm not him.
