Doctor's analysis. Tua had a complete dislocation with an aditional fracture of the hip socket. Bo was only a partial dislocation. Bo wasnt even able to play baseball at a high level again. Tua will have to stand up to continued contact and punishment as an NFL QB. If he could'nt stay healthy in college with a pretty good oline what makes you think he will stay healthy in the NFL after a major hip injury and with a probable mediocre oline in Miami?

I would not touch Tua with a ten foot pole in this draft.

Bo wasn't able to play baseball again because he wasn't treated correctly. If he were both treated correctly AND had more modern medicine techniques, he probably would have had been able to play.

Yes medicine has advanced some since the 80s, but Tua's hip injury was also more severe than Bo's, and Bo didnt have to keep taking punishment in the NFL like Tua will.

It makes no sense to me to take a chance on Tua. There are red flags all over the place with him.

Bo didn't get his diagnosed correctly and thus had more damage because of it. he lost bloodflow in his hip.

The initial injury is not as big a factor as what happened soon after.

    1. That's harking back a long time.
    2. Saban wanted Brees. He was overridden.
    3. Brees wouldn't have done nearly as well in our offense and I have no confidence we would have changed our offense to fit his talents.

It's not similar though Hitman. From the 30for30 episode, the issue was that his hip dislocated on the tackle and when he rolled over, it slipped back in. However, as the medical staff didn't diagnose or believe the dislocation, they didn't know that he had ruptured the artery that fed the socket, so blood was pooling in the wrong area. Because of the length of time that it took to diagnose this, by the time they did, the joint had been starved of blood, so the tissue was dying. Tua's was different, as his was relocated by medical staff on the sideline, which limited any damage to the blood vessels. Is he going to make a full recovery, no idea but his chances of a full recovery are much better than Bo's.
Is the closest comparison the Jets LB (who's name escapes me), who also dislocated his hip in college and he's made a full recovery. Different position and mechanics to a QB but gives us something to judge it on.

Yes I actually wanted brees. Brees had a completely different injury than tua, was already a proven NFL QB and had no major injury history in college. Completely different situation.

just my opinion but I think we learned that lesson with Dew Brees. if we can get Tua without moving up, all the better. take a chance on greatness, it's one of the reasons we accumulated so many picks in the first place.

#3 is pure supposition. if we had Brees, what do you think the possibility of Saban staying is? that would change the entire outlook of the team in it's self. but we passed on Brees. Culpepper wasn't the answer and Satan screwed over the Phins. and that is how you are coming up with #3.

He can get a degree at any time he wants - college credit doesn't expire when you are drafted. Take a summer or two worth of courses and done. With an NFL contract, the loss of the scholarship is meaningless.

I didn't say nor imply they were the same injury.

What is the same, is that you were mad at Saban for listening to other doctors than the one that actually performed the procedure and are perfectly ok doing that yourself in this case.

And if you have to go that far back, it's probably not a great argument.
And no, it's not the same reason. As has already been pointed out, Brees was already a pro QB, his injury wasn't the same and he was a free agent who wouldn't have cost us any draft picks.
You think Saban was the same coach with us that he was with Alabama? I personally think he evolved between LSU and then the Dolphins.

Cool bro, i'm not trying to be a GM and that's a nice spin on my words. Classic internet misinterpretation right there on your part. You completely missed my point...Sailed right over your head like an errant Josh Rosen pass...Or was it Sage Rosenfels? Or Jay Fiedler? Chad Henne? Hell, I don't know...We haven't had a franchise level Quarterback here in years unless you count Tannehill.

Aannnnd I had stated a question about how much of it was just overall dislike for Tua vrs Injury. I totally get that the injury is scaring people away. I got it 100% and I am in total agreement about that. The injury scares me too....But I think you take that risk.

No, its a fine argument and the time back has literally nothing to do with anything. Hell, many people keep bringing up Bo Jackson which was considerably further back than that.

The things you're pointing about Brees' situation have nothing to do with my point. Brees' doctor said he'd be fine, everyone else said he wouldn't. So far in the process, Tua's doctors have said everything is on track and there haven't been any complications. Could there be before the draft? Sure. But there isn't yet and everyone is acting like we won't know by the time the draft comes around. They are acting like there's this 50/50- or worse chance he won't recover. For crying out loud there's people acting like he'll have to learn how to walk again.

No i don't think Saban is the same coach. However, please explain how using a QB to their full potential is a way he's changed from when he was at the Dolphins?

Whatever. You're convinced you're right. I'm convinced it's a risk. I am not saying "Tua will get hurt" or "Tua will not be a good QB." I'm saying it's a big risk for such a high draft pick. So if I'm wrong, the worst that happens is we get some other QB who may or may not be as good as Tua. If you're wrong, we waste a 5th overall pick and millions of dollars on someone who'll never produce.

First thing - Saban treats the truth like it’s the girl in a bukkake film.
Second thing - The idea that Saban wanted Brees much more than Culpepper is something that became often said several years down the track when it was clear which player had the better career. All the contemporaneous Reports I read were that the Dolphins (Saban included) considered Brees and Culpepper 1A and 1B and of having similar value.
Third If you are betting on a player to come back from injury it is safer to bet on recovery from a knee injury than a shoulder injury.

I didn't handwave anything. You've made it clear you are set in your beliefs so there's no point trying to counter each of them in serial order. I summarized the situation. You think Tua's worth the risk, I don't. I laid out the consequences if either position is wrong. You of course, ignored it.

I don't think drafting Tua at five is a reach, nor do I see it as a bad idea. I think there is an actual plan in place and it probably involves us drafting him. However...I don't think the plan is to play him right away. I think he's going to sit for a year or two and I think we're going to bring in a guy to bridge things until Tua is ready. I could see us signing Phillip Rivers to finish out his career with us while Tua sits and learns behind him and Fitzpatrick. I think the idea is to compete while grooming Tua or some other rookie for the job in 2021 or possibly 2022. At this point I think we all know that coach Flores isn't here to lose games and tank. You can all but kiss Trevor Lawrence goodbye unless we are just downright awful next year, but I don't think that will be the case. We acquired draft picks, we have cap space, I think we handle both wisely and find a way to compete next season. Having a winning team around a young rookie quarterback can only be a good thing. Tua sitting behind a Phillip Rivers, or Ryan Fitzpatrick for a year or two can only be a good thing. We will have protected him as an investment and given him plenty of time to recover from his injury. I truly believe this is already a forgone conclusion and i'm willing to bet money that, that is the plan this team has in place.

There is no way in hell he will sit for 2 years. A huge part of the reason to draft a young QB is the cheap 5 year contract, surround them with pricier talent and hope by the point it's new contract time that they have elevated themselves to a high level of play capable of sustaining a team with lesser talent (as they will take up a greater portion of the cap).

One year is possible, but it likely depends entirely on health. If we draft Tua, he is healthy and back at 100% in like week 8 and Fitzpatrick of whomever is sucking it up? We will see Tua.

I made it clear, that he is on track for being perfectly fine and if there are any complications, we should know about them by the time of the draft.

So definitely saying he's too much of a risk, isn't reasonable at this point. Saying you want to wait and see? that's reasonable.

I don't think you are going to keep Tua on he bench for two years. if he's healthy, he's pushing for playing time. I think one year is pushing it and would be willing to bet that he would see some time in the last quarter of the season, as long as he's healthy.

The rookie QB contract is just so valuable. It's also another reason to draft a QB in the first instead of dumpster diving later - you get that 5th year option.

To be fair you're putting a lot of faith into the doctors. I personally dont believe what they have to say about a prospect and a different set of doctors than Brees had could be entirely incorrect. They arent the same people so I dont see how his doctors being right/telling the truth = all doctors do the same.

They have no reason to cause any panic about a prospect and lose him millions. I dont personally take their word as far as you can throw it.

The only thing anyone can do is wait. Even if the bone is 100% healthy in terms of sustaining future injuries, he could very well lose some twitch. That would be huge since hes not the best prospect to begin with IMO.

The more I look at this draft the more I believe there isnt even a single QB worth his salt.

They have no reason to lie and lose their reputation - if they are positive it's because they feel more confident in that result. And so far, their prognosis seems more likely to be true than some of the doom and gloom from random forum posters.

Also, saying he was not a top prospect is just flat out incorrect. He has been touted for years, and nothing he has done in school has undermined that.
