I totally get where you are coming from but I think its a hell of a lot to ask from a rookie QB on a terrible team to dictate the defense in any way.

Not to say he will be able to do it. I just think it's entirely TBD.

    And I totally understand that..

    That’s the game right??

This is what I know about him at the pro level..

He’s hitching way too much, then he realizes that, then he rushes..viscous cycle.

Multitasking is the key, sure he can drop in a Safe pocket and make a good throw when the first read is there, what I’m waiting to see is when protection breaks down, or his first read is covered, what’s his plan, how does he keep his composure, how is he maneuvering athletically through the traffic, is it with precision and can he make the play.

I know you’ve Watched baker mayfield play the game, freneticly calculated is what I would describe his play tempo..If he’s gonna make a mistake, it’s going to be on his terms.

I haven't really watched anything about Josh Rosen until the last month. Mostly in the last few days. Looking at his NFL highlights and Strong Opinion Sports Podcast. He seems to know his stuff.

Honestly, I am excited. Generally, I am arguing on the side of "2nd round picks are important" with the "quarterback is the most important position, you have to go for one every year" crowd.

Generally speaking, lower 2nd round quarterbacks are lucky to be career backups. Mostly because if a quarterback is talented enough he will go in the upper second round AT LEAST if not EJ Manualed or JP Losemaned.

Obviously, he has problems in his game. However, what I saw was the most natural looking quarterback I have seen as a Dolphin since Chad Pennington. He made mistakes, he looked hesitant at times, he does not have the mobility to make up for a terrible line, and all of the other problems he has.

However, some of those throws he makes I haven't seen since Marino, as a Dolphin. A QB who can throw a wide receiver open with arm strength.

Do I think he is going to work out? Probably not. Most of these quarterbacks do not. Do I think it is worth the risk? Yes. I do.

I dont disagree, Baker is a different QB though I'd say. He can obviously dictate the game with his legs if other things arent going right.

For a pocket passer to not hitch up one of his options has to be open and/or he needs proper coaching to read an NFL defense and at least some protection.

I agree though we need to see him do these things. I just dont count last year against him too much. This year though hes accountable for himself no matter what, we only have a short period to evaluate and decide if hes the guy or not.

I totally agree. However, we don't live in the real world anymore. Social media is a blessing and a curse. I would say more of a curse because we can't handle the truth. Most can't agree to disagree on the littlest thing and are offended at the drop of a hat. One misspoken word can be disastrous because people would rather get a zillion clicks or follows instead of keeping things in context. I watched the video, and then read the rest of the thread where Galant posted some tweets from our local beat writers. Let's just say that I am glad that I watched the presser. The tweets, to me, were practically useless if you wanted to get a feel for the situation and Rosen.

Also, Baker was on a much more talented team than Rosen last year (once Jackson was shown the door). Baker looks the better player but that's the reason he went number 1

Well, it can seem ridiculous if it's viewed as one big act but in reality it's a naturally occurring thing.

Fans want content. Writers make their living producing that content. The content is better if it contains something of substance. Interviews are one way to do that. Hence players get asked questions. This is so routine that it's scheduled and managed by the teams as well as the NFL. So it's not fake or contrived. These situations will pop up and the players have to act appropriately.

There's no rule that says you have to lie. Players simply have to understand that they can do a lot of damage by being careless. So it's a challenge of expressing what you want to say in a way that is clear and concise.

There are obviously practical rules that crop up. Be supportive of your teammates. Be respectful of your coaches. Always look forward optimistically. Thank the fans.

Quite frankly, the only way you screw this up is if you're too inept not to speak carelessly or the stress breaks you. So in a sense, how a guy performs at the mic does indicate things about him.

I dont find that natural at all though. It's an entirely made up and human system.

If the content is just bland standard answers it really has no value whatsoever and is intellectually and morally lacking.

I entirely understand your point and it Is true, but it is true because we created it. Not because its naturally right.

Now of course there are limits. Noone should be up there going crazy and ranting or whatever, giving away team secrets and so on.

But essentially you're saying that often players will be asked questions that they didn't answer or have to carefully craft answers...so they're not really giving honest answers. Not to mention, it's so understood that answers aren't really truthful, so most people mistrust what is said by coaches or players in public interviewes. People will say things like, "Of course he took the blame, he's not going to throw his teammates under the bus to answer a reporters question," or things like that.

I was thinking lately how entertaining it would be for an organisation to let a player or coach, or all of them, just to give a bunch of outrageous answers and let the press figure it out.

Normal questions are fine. It's the ones where the press are clearly digging for something or seeing if someone will trip up.

Would love to see a team diffuse that by just going overboard.

Watch his college film videos that I posted. He was a lot more decisive in college. He may just need some time to adjust to the NFL game speed.

If doesn't have to be bland, standard answers is my point.

There's no rule that says you have to sound like a robot.

You can be as honest and contrite as you want. Rory McIlroy does this quite well in the golf world. He opens up a lot and people have always applauded him for it. A lot of his image is based on being that way. Arnold Palmer was always good with the media. Phil Mickelson is another great competitor that is great with the media. Meanwhile other guys like Tiger have a much more combative approach.

Football is a bit different because it's a team sport. I get that. You aren't going to want to throw your teammates under the bus even though you certainly can if you wish.

Nonetheless, I look to certain guys who have a personality (i.e. Favre). You can be a real human being if you want to be. Most guys are either too dumb to say anything interesting or too fearful to be a leader and speak the truth at the mic (although there's plenty of opportunity to do it!). Most guys don't want that added responsibility. It's easier for them to say something bland and get out of there.

The problem with interviewing football players is that the majority of them have nothing interesting to say. It isn't the system of interviewing people that's messed up. It's the people involved. There's rarely a football player with something insightful to share.

I do agree many dont have much interesting to say, but I also feel like those who do are discouraged from doing so generally.

One can offer up a carefully crafted answer that is simultaneously honest. It's the act of being an effective speaker. It takes practice.

Answering off-the-cuff does not lead to more honesty. It leads to more mistakes. I would call that being unprepared and careless.

As they probably should be in that (team) setting, right?

We don't want to throw (young) people in front of a mic and let them give a hot take they'll regret 30 minutes later. Have you ever watched a young, unprepared person stand up and deliver a point? There are always a few cringe-worthy moments--a bad analogy, a misplaced phrase, confusing the audience with unclear explanations or loose with terminology/jargon, etc.

You definitely want them to be measured. That's for sure. But that doesn't mean people can't be honest. It just means learning to avoid the stuff you don't want to say.

I remember when Deandre Hopkins went on Arian Foster's podcast. Is that still a thing, btw? Haha, in any case, Hopkins offered up a lot of insight having spent time at Clemson. He didn't necessarily speak highly of the process of being an elite college athelite. He sounded somewhat bitter about it TBH. He was critical of the elements he felt took advantage of him and his fellow players.

Anyhow, point being, there are ample opportunities for players who want to speak out. Arian Foster went on Joe Rogan after retiring. While I've kind of abandoned listening to Rogan, he did/does have one of the most popular podcasts out there. Hopkins said what he did while being a star in the NFL.

If these guys want to speak out, they most certainly can (on their own time).

Something that certainly complicates the matter is that guys who are idiots take the first chance to pop off. They say something stupid and I think everyone learns not to do it.

With the next generation being as unabashedly outspoken as they are though, things will evolve. More and more folks will come out and they'll be too naive to hold back. They won't have learned as much of this "player-speak."

Yes, at times we'll cringe, but in general it'll be an improvement when a few do it well.

    That's my take anyway.

Or maybe he needs to be in a system that actually makes sense. It was bad enough to get his OC fired midyear and the entire staff shown the door at the end of the season. Who knows what they were telling him to do out there.

As he stood last year, it simply comes down to the game was too big for him mentally AND physically..

This dude is gonna hurt real bad if he keeps neglecting his body, if I don’t see a size improvement in 3 months I’ve got a big red flag..

Haha...you know what I liked the most?

A journalist asked the following question: A year ago you came into the league as a franchise quarterback of the future. Do you think you could still be that franchise-type quarterback?

As I heard that I thought, my answer would be one word. I'd just leave it there.

    Josh's response:

    “Yes.”

Sure. But then who is crafting the answer? Lol. Like we'd have teams giving players answer sheets with bullet points before press conferences. I'm just saying, reporters ask questions about relationships between players/coaches/etc, or about current events, or all sorts of things...and if you think that players are going to give honest answers about controversial things, you're crazy. Lol. They essentially are going to give non answers for answers because it is safe and can avoid potential problems that could arise from telling the truth.

I said it as soon as we picked him up - there is no "competition." We took Rosen to see what he has, and we won't get that from the bench.

The absolute worst case scenario with Rosen is not that he blows *** and plays himself out of the league ... it's that he plays juuuuuuuust well enough for Grier and Flores to say "weeeeeeeeeell let's give him just one more year" and then the next year it's "weeeeeeeell maybe just need a few new pieces on the OL" followed by "weeeeeeeeeeeell maybe better bodies at WR". That should sound familiar to all of us I think.

Rosen needs to get in and play. I can maybe see like 2-3 weeks of Fitz just to make sure Rosen is fully up to speed (or rather to let the line gel a few games before throwing him out there )... but I doubt it. All we have heard is how he is a great fit in the NE scheme we will be running, the ideal type of guy. He will get the chance to prove it or not, which is a good thing.

It's the same as going in for an interview. You can be honest and tell your story all the same. But it will show if you're winging it. I was always told to be honest without being confessional.

The world wants people to be respectful and professional. Representing your team and the franchise is a demanding thing. It shouldn't come as a shock to anyone that doing it well requires some effort.

I don't necessarily share your pessimistic view which seems to suggest that telling the truth often leads to problems. I don't think that way. The truth doesn't have to create problems if it's shared in the proper way. Throwing people under the bus for example can create problems.

Giving someone the truth in a way that doesn't create problems isn't necessarily easy though so it requires some tact. Eventually you can learn to express what you want without ever saying the stuff you're not allowed to say.

    It's an art.

Nice! I had no idea that Jeremiah felt so strong about Rosen and that he would take Darnold, Rosen, and Mayfield before any of the QB's this year. I was prepared to keep my expectations measured; however, when I hear stuff like this I can't help to think we might have gotten lucky. :-) I also realize we may be putting Rosen in a similar situation talent wise with our OL, but it's still early, so I am willing to see how it plays out. It would be nice if we can reasonably protect him so we can get a fair evaluation.

Honestly I think we've seen this off season that we're not going to play around and that fine won't be accepted as the requirement anymore. We made the moves we did for a reason. I think if Rosen ends up like RT17 as sort of kind of a player then we'll draft a QB in the next 2 years. Maybe they give him the 2020 draft too, but I think unless Rosen is the chosen one then we'll have a 1st round rookie QB by 2021 at the latest. Then again considering the overhaul it looks like they're planning with the cap space and draft picks for 2020, it'll be interesting to see how many of the current roster are still here come September 2021.

Looks that way eh? I don't think Grier and co. will give him 2 years and skip some of those QBs in 2020's draft. 16 game audition...make it happen Josh, you've got a second chance at being a pup...bite.

Yeah, I have a good respect for DJ and his analysis. So it makes it hard to temper my own excitement knowing we got a player in Josh Rosen I wanted Miami to pick in the 1st round last year. And we got him at a very low cost, money wise and draft compensation wise.

With that said, I realize we had the 31st ranked offensive line according to PFF in 2018 and have done little to remedy that. I would think good coaching my move that dial up 2 or 3 ranks. Maybe the new scheme might help a bit as well. The big question will be how much Deiter (3rd round) and Prince (6th round) will help. I feel like we are good in the RB, TE and WR positions so it will come down to how well the OLine plays.

Either way I am excited about the possibilities and the season can't start soon enough.

I agree I don't think it goes on beyond 2020 but some of those potential names in 2021 do give you somewhat of a safety net if you want to give Rosen a slightly longer rope.

Grown men shouldn't wear jerseys but the only acceptable jersey for any Dolphins fan to have is a throwback Marino.
