You can do that at 20 when you have a specific need.... and Savage was not gonna make it another 9 picks ...way better than taking a dt at 13.
He fits a need sure, but they have more than a few needs and just dropped several picks to get a player from a position that still had it's full depth and some decent end of the first, early to mid second round prospects. Just the kind of move that GM's make out of desperation after falling in love with a specific guy. Usually bites them in the ***.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself but there's a few players still available here that I'd be very happy if they were available in 20 or so picks.
Wilkins was EASILY a top 15-20 pick. A team who needs DL, and got one who fits their scheme at 13, was not a reach.
A dt is a piece you add at 13 when you have filled other holes..,you don’t build around a dt. There is big time compression between guys like Wilkins and Tillery, Willis, Slayton bugs and Gaines. There is just not 30 pick type value there when compared to a Dillard versus a Risner, Edwards or mCGary... we can disagree but I think it is obvious lack of value myself.
We didn't give up any extra picks for him though. That said, if he's not a force and Haskins lights up the league ...
As you know this coaching staff has Belichick's fingerprints all over it. What does BB value? Versatility, smarts, dedication, selflessness... That's Wilkins to a "T"... And he's also a phenomenal dlineman...
If Haskins HITS 100 qbr he impacts the game more than if Christian Wilkins is an All Pro.....it is the position and the resources allocated and not the particular player because I think generally Wilkins will be “ok” just not special...he is not Aaron Donald. Just gave up draft capital of 13 that fans suffered like hell to “obtain” for a jag dt.
He is phenomenal when he is up by 21 and has Ferrell and or Lawrence and or another five star player lined up against them and he is an accessory....
The average Passer rating last year was just under 100...If Haskins is an average QB and Wilkins is an All Pro Wilkins would be the better pick and have more of an impact.
So now that we know who has gone in Round 1, who is the player remaining that you're most hoping is available come our pick.
Bama game is a great example but teams did not gameplay around Wilkins they gameplanned Ferrell or Lawrence...Wilkins was a terror in the first half with Lawrence out and then they started chipping inside or cutting the inside lane off and he disappears because he wins with his hands in college and won’t in the nfl..but again we will see and one of us will be wrong and one of us will be right.
We need edge rushers like whoa, so literally any of them. I could see us doubling up in rounds 2 and 3.
Why won't he win with hands in the NFL? It's a skill that translates. And if teams are needing to impact and change their gameplan to account for him, sounds like he is a disruptive presence who is doing what he needs and is being gameplanned against ..? N'Keal Harry to New England to close out the night - good pick imo, was a fan of the kid and thought he might be a potential round 2 target if we wanted playmakers. Good draft by the AFC East, everyone stayed put and took a good player. Brady probably isn't thrilled with the DL infusion though.
There is only 1 late round QB worth taking, imo... Gardner Minshew Pass Completions - #1 in NCAA Pass Attempts - #1 in NCAA Completion Percentage - #2 in NCAA Pass Yards - #2 in NCAA Passing TDs - #4 in NCAA Total Yards - #3 in NCAA Finished 5th in Heisman votes
Ferrell was a good pick. Had Mayock still been an analyst for NFL Network, he'd likely have had him as the 2nd best EDGE in the draft. This would have boosted his stock all by itself--given how respected Mayock is throughout the league--and Ferrell wouldn't have been seen as such an egregious reach in the top five. He's a smart, tough, high-character guy with good-but-not-elite measurables. He's not a freak like Khalil Mack, but he is absolutely a guy you can build a culture around. Regardless, I don't think he'll have any issues creating havoc off the edge for them, and that's arguably Oakland's greatest weakness. Jacobs was a widely expected pick. He'll be a decent 'back for them, but he isn't an elite guy right now. Tough to justify a non-bluechip RB in the first, but Gruden loves to run the ball and I'm not sure he trusted anyone else on his roster to carry that load. Abram was a late-riser in most mocks. Old school, hard-nosed safety who I wouldn't be surprised to see as a perennial all-pro in a few years. IMO, he'll wind up as Oakland's best pick of the draft. Tons of good talent available! There were numerous reaches at the end of the first, such as Darnell Savage, Tytus Howard, Jerry Tillery, L.J. Collier, DeAndre Baker, and Kaleb McGary. I'm keeping my eye on Jawaan Taylor and his perpetual free-fall. I projected him to slip into the 20's on draft night, but I had no idea he'd be available in the second frame. Just last week, he was considered a top-10 lock. Taylor's a great tackle, but between his limitations as a right-side protector and some medical red flags about his knee, selecting him is a sizable risk. That being said, if he's on the board when Miami picks, I'm taking him. Risk-reward is worth it at that juncture. Other names I'd be excited for in the 2nd: Cody Ford, OG Dalton Risner, OG Erik McCoy, OC A.J. Brown, WR D.K. Metcalf, WR Parris Campbell, WR Riley Ridley, WR Zach Allen, DE Oshane Ximines, EDGE Chase Winovich, EDGE Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE Jordan Brailford, EDGE Byron Murphy, CB Justin Layne, CB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, S Taylor Rapp, S And, of course, there's always the prospect of taking Drew Lock. I haven't been of a fan of his throughout the pre-draft process, but I can see him having success if he's allowed to develop before starting. Although, I'd prefer to deal for Josh Rosen--just not at the cost of a 2nd.
I give the Wilkins pick a B+. They chose to draft the strength of the draft DEFENSIVE LINE and I applaud that. Personally I would have drafted his teammate Lawrence but Wilkins is an acceptable substitution. Whereas I wouldve gone for the immovable object in the run defense with a bull rush, Grier decided to go with the quicker gap shooter who is good vs run but can get pushed around. You need both so Grier went with who he liked more or who he valued more. Time will tell which was the better option. Now pick Jaylon Ferguson with the 2nd and all will be well
i agree. Lawrence would have been my pick. I think his floor is much higher than Wilkins and even though theoritically Wilkins ceiling is higher I think Lawrence will be a better football player. But it's not a terrible pick. Wilkins has skills and if he maximizes them he could be a very good pro but there is a bust potential there which I dont see with Lawrence
There is very little bust potential with Wilkins. Lawrence is a 2 down run lane clogger and that's it. Wilkins is a three down player and much more versatile. No one in their right mind would pick Lawrence over Wilkins at 13. You don't know what you are talking about.
Cody Ford, Yodny Cajuste, Eric Mcoy, Chase Winovich, Charles Omenihu, Austin Bryant or Jaylen Ferguson
Enough with the hyperbole. Lawrence was the very next DT drafted only three picks later by a team that's famous for creating great defensive lines. If you think there is some huge gap between the two you are on meds. Yes, Lawrence is a run stuffer but he also has a killer bull rush where the center goes right back into the QB. He won't get the sacks but he will be disruptive. And he actually has a couple of good pass rush moves so who knows, he might get better at pass rushing. The thing is Lawrence has an immovable base. He will take out two blockers every play. With Wilkins,, and I gave him a B+ for Chrissakes he doesn't have that base and can get washed out on run plays. Overall he played the run well but like 2 cents points out his technique will have to be improved because that hand stuff doesn't work as well in the NFL. Will he be able to anchor well enough? I think so but if I'm wrong then he could be a bust. I don't think either will bust but I think Lawrence will be more dominating.
You're 100% right--and we rarely see eye-to-eye. Wilkins is a premier three-tech with the versatility to play nose, making him an ideal fit for our hybrid defense. He was generally regarded as on-par with the other blue-chip DT prospects (Williams, Oliver, Simmons) by analysts, talent evaluators, and presumably many front offices. Lawrence was never held in the same light. He's a two-down one-tech in the mold of Johnathan Hankins; like Hankins, he'll be a fine player, but not a difference-maker in today's NFL. There's a reason he was widely regarded as a 2nd-round prospect.
Agree totally. Lots of value in the 20-60 area. The same reason a dt is a bad pick at 13 is the same reason we should be excited about round 2 this year ... it is not too heavy. Wish we had 2 picks.....but oh well. I do think the wr group is criminally over rated tho... just a bad group imho.... tons of depth in the ol and dL..... which is why I would have gone for a dt like Hill or Willis later... Willis IS Wilkins.... penetrator and gap shooter and is less likely to get pushed around but not as active... but likely a 3 round difference in investment and A 20 type difference in talent.
Adam I agree with you if it was down to the 2 I take Lawrence also. But take neither at 13. Ferrell was the best of the 3 and made the other two better. You know exactly what your talking about and i agree.
Yet he was taken at 17.......BOTH these guys were divisive with the professionals... some loved them some didn’t. Lawrence hurts you on third down and is not really a 3 down guy.... Wilkins will hurt you on first down although he will flash shooting gaps and making the occasional play. Lawrence will be the better first down player and Wilkins a far better third down player...... particularly when you get positive D/D and he can use his hand skills in space/pass rush.....but you have to stop first down to get to third down.... that’s a problem.
Anyone feel a trade for us in round 2? I'm a little off on how we bypassed Haskins and didnt load up any premium picks in 2020. All it takes is a few teams nose diving and we are put of range of Tua in 2020. Could we drop round 2 entirely in favor of a 2020 first?
Jaylon Ferguson, Chase winovich, Jawaan Taylor, Greg Little, Elgton Jenkins, Drew Lock, Cody Ford, Eric McCoy.... some I think are over rated Ya-sin, Dalton Risner, Greedy Williams, Parris Campbell DK Metcalf....would really like to end up with Jaylon Ferguson or Greg Little
What if Tau gets Mackenzie Miltoned, Fromme has to throw deep on time and we see that abortion and Herbert actually has to throw the ball more than 6 yards???? Then it is hello lose for Lawrence.....Tank for Trevor or whatever... the beat goes on...
He is far better using his hands in space. When he gets chipped inside and has to redirect his hands become useless and he has trouble identifying the ball. In space he uses his hands beautifully to keep guys off his legs which is why he plays so well In Space.... he is special in space.....but if you get him off center his play slows down and his hands can’t create the space to use any pass rush moves and he won’t win outside off the snap. He is far better inside than out but he does not get to use his big time skill there which is his hands.....it just does not translate imho, but I get others disagree.
Hitching my Hope Wagon to Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. I'd even move up for him. I think our new staff values position flexibility.
