Best explaination of the THill trade so far. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...ortedly-will-pay-5-million-to-ryan-tannehill/
Man....at this point, I'm fantasizing about one of the QBs sitting there at #13, and Oakland offering us #27 and one of their first rounders in 2020 to move up to get him....
Looks like the dead money is more complicated that it seems. Do we take on 18m right away then? I'll look for a deeper explaination on that.
You probably spoke too soon trying to call folks out. “As it turns out, it’s the Brock Osweiler Trade Light. The curious ability of the Dolphins to unload quarterback Ryan Tannehill and a 2019 sixth-round pick onto the Titans for a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick was fueled by Miami’s decision to give Tannehill a $5 million parting gift. The Dolphins will pay that much of Tannehill’s guaranteed $7 million salary for 2019, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. So, basically, the Dolphins have purchased for $5 million and a sixth-round pick this year a fourth-round pick next year and a seventh-round pick this year. That’s the only reason to trade Tannehill instead of cutting him, given that Tannehill’s contract had no guaranteed money due in 2019. Indeed, the Dolphins simply could have cut Tannehill, owing him nothing and accepting nothing in exchange for him. Instead, they get value in the form of net draft-pick gain — but they’re paying $5 million for it. From Tannehill’s perspective, there was no reason to accept the trade, given that the Dolphins eventually would have released him. With no trigger in his contract forcing Miami to either make a lump-sum payment or guarantee a chunk of his base salary, however, the Dolphins could have squatted on Tannehill, waiting for perhaps an injury or the inability of a team to get a quarterback they may be targeting in the draft. His base salary would have remained not guaranteed until Week One of the regular season. Of course, the Dolphins would have had to allow Tannehill to participate in the offseason program opening next month, assuming the risk of a fluke season-ending injury that would have put the team on the hook for the full $18.75 million he was previously due to earn. So it was a win-win-win for a team that needed a backup quarterback, a team that wanted to shed its starting quarterback, and a quarterback whose options likely would have dried up if he’d refused to go along with the trade and the reduced salary.
Doesn't make sense to me . When the Browns traded for Osweiler they got the better set if picks. It was obvious that they were going to cut him. This is more Miami paid $5 million to turn a 6th or 5th into a 4th. Though the Titans gain nothing. It didn't seem that similar to me
Hard to find 3 better backups in the league. I'll be rooting for the guy.....change of scenary is good for everyone in this case.
Wow, I was wrong. So who the heck is our starting QB? LOL, there's nobody left out there but Bortles or Kaep. And there's no way they could count on Falk starting today I wouldn't think....who does that leave? Osweiller? Trading the picks we just got to grab someone else's young backup? To me, the only thing that makes sense is that this is a signal our QB1 is in this year's draft.
I could be wrong, but there really isn't a way we could sign a QB without screwing up our comp pick, right? I mean, ANY QB is going to want some serious money, right? If that is the case, I don't want to sign anyone especially if they really aren't going to bring much to the table. Bortles is laughable, and there would be too much polarity with Kapernick. You might be right that the QB we want is in this years draft. It's obvious Murray would be our 1st choice. Is there another QB that would be legit? I really don't want to waste our time on a guy like Jones and don't want to sell the farm for Haskins or Lock. Note: I realize we can sign a guy 2 weeks after the draft and not screw up our comp pick, but who?
I mean in general. Just the way this whole thing has turned out. Thinking and hoping we’ve got the guy several years ago. To seeing flashes. To seeing misery. And more flashes. Then injury again. Now he’s just gone. For virtually nothing. It’s just frustrating and a damn joke to me as a fan of this team. The fact we got a fourth next year is nice. Who cares about the 7th really. Just wish we could have gotten more out of him in general. I don’t care we paid him to go or however you want to spin it. It’s worth it at the end of the day. Just... a damn joke all around it came to this
from CK.. “Fact Miami was essentially willing to sell cap space for draft compensation in Tannehill deal (paying $5 million of Tannehill’s salary) is even stronger evidence that Miami might’ve eaten Robert Quinn’s $1.1 million roster bonus yesterday in order to make him more appealing”
So either we’re witnessing an extremely sneaky and smart new organization or the coaching staff is already showing signs of negativity. Cutting tannehill was expected, but letting what we heard were their choice of Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater vistit and not get their man than releasing Tannehill doesn’t seem right. There really are no other viable free agent quarterbacks in play unless we are extremely confident we have a deal already in place for a trade for QB or were straight rolling with a rookie or any viable QB in the draft. One of the top 3 QB’s should be around even if we have to jump to 10. If we outplayed ourselves already and now their scrambling to get a veteran it will be a very sobering wake up call.
I’m glad we got something for him, even if he had to void his contract, and we had to pay most of his salary for the other team.. So yeah I speculated he wouldn’t garner a pick on the open market..I guess those stipulations shouldn’t count.. Who the fu## cares, what’s unfortunate is being right about the guys game..wasted 7 freakin years.
Glad the experiment is finally over..Now i guess i'll have to burn my Tannehill jersey no way I'm gonna pay somebody $5 to take it.
Three words for you- Smokin' Jay Cutler! LMAO, I would literally throw a temper tantrum if that somehow happened. I'd rather see us sign Favre on his 5th comeback tour!
The comp picks we get this season are for the trades we made last year, aren't they? I think it lags a year behind so teams can't tank and then stock up after the draft.
I'd rather try and re-animate someone like Otto Graham and have his stinking, rotting corpse under centre. Actually, if we are really trying to tank this year, Smokin' Jay would be a better call than Otto's corpse...
Taylor and Bridgewater know this job is a temporary gig and is not paying what they want. That's fine. Those are valid reasons to turn this job down. I don't blame them. Evidently Kaepernick is. smdh.
**** kap. Not because of his politcal stance. Couldn't care less about his opinions one way or another. At this point, the plan for this team is clear. It's 2020. We dont need a QB capable of winning 5 or 6 games now to **** it all up. I'm not a fan of tanking, but it's clear to me that's what the team has in mind... so be it. Blow it up. Tank. Call it whatever you want, but this team has pressed the long needed reset button. Blow out the fat over priced, over paid contracts, and build the right way. with young, cheap talent first, and free agents second. Now... just pick the right young cheap talent, and sign the right guys when you have the cap space.
I doubt Kaepernick is good enough to win 2 games, much less 5 or 6 (total conjecture). I just don't think our first-year head coach and newly assembled FO need the media storm that he brings. The Dolphins brain trust understands more about football than I know about anything, but I sincerely hope we pass on a high draft pick QB and build the guts of our team. You cannot duplicate Belly check, he is the X factor that no one else has. I assume that BB's m.o. is find value, in the draft, in free agency, in trades, wherever. One thing (I believe) is the Pats like having lots of bites of the apple. Hitting on a 4th round pick mitigates losing your players when they get too expensive.
