I like it. Allen is a proven player. Not the catch reception God we all hope for, but he's probably going to be key in the run block game.

This is puzzling. They drafted two TE's last season I hope this doesn't stunt their progress. I don't like it.

Man give it a rest. I have been all over this team for years but Ross owned up to his mistake and fired Gase let’s give the new coaches and team at least one full season before we bash them as incompetent. We’re jettisoning a lot of players and 7 million over two years for one of the best blocking TE’s in the NFL who these coach’s have vast experience with must mean something you think??

I get it but let’s not worry about the money let’s focus on the team they are building. GIVE them time to show what they are doing before we go off on them please!!

I like it, and i think he can still be a threat in the red zone. In new england not so much when you got all those receivers and gronk.

I wish I could ask this guy some questions..

What happened??? Is one I’d like to ask, this guy was a smooth gifted receiver with super soft hands and Saviness coming out of college..

I know he had early injuries but this complete change of game is baffling to me.

Hopefully signing a great blocking TE will actually help the development of Drake and the running game as well as whatever QB we put back there. Of course there's always the hope that vets will help develop the young TEs behind them, but at least he can help an oline that has plagued us for so long.

the best blocking TE according to PFF only made 2m last year and is a FA so allen overpaid for what he does.

Gase wasnt what they did wrong tho. Signing tannebaum who took the jets from playoff team to what they are now is what Ross got wrong. and guess what tannebaum did the same thing in miami. and now they are still following that blueprint by overpaying for a blocking TE. you can get blocking TEs for half the price as this and it'll be the same. but bc he had 3 good seasons 5 years ago Allen gets paid now. this is so dumb we are paying a player based on what he did 5 years ago... kinda like signing cameron.

allen was the 63rd ranked TE in PFF not worth 3.5m a season.

His salary will mean absolutely nothing. You think his 3.5 mil is going to prevent us from making moves this season or next after all of our roster moves?

You're complaining over something that has no relevance.

The game isn't played on paper though, so a PFF rating doesn't tell the whole story.

Allen is obviously a strong locker room presence. He clearly has familiarity with the system we plan on running. He also has familiarity with the coaches.

He's being paid 7 mil because he's an OG in the locker room, helping convert the holdouts from the previous regime, and helping establish some familiarity. Guys like this are important during transitions this big.

i'm not going to care about a guy that won't be here in 2 years. he's just taking a roster spot that could be used to develop someone usefull.

It's not like Madden. There are human factors involved in these decisions. Remember these guys are being hired as employees, not just numbers on a page. People have different skill sets, and not all of them are physical.

You're saying it's a waste for developmental reasons but moves like this ARE developmental, considering the entire team now has to learn and understand a new system and a new culture. If you do that without any veteran familiarity and leadership you're behind the ball.

A lack of understanding regarding how the league works on a human level is not a valid rationale for not liking a signing.

I agree I am understanding this move a little more. You have to put some sort of competitive team out there and Allen is a guy who isn't going to be a game changer but could lend a hand in developing the younger TE's.

riiiight...and have a vet like Allen has 0 effect on developing two 2nd year tight ends? Youre way off on this. The 4th TE on the roster isn't not getting developed because we signed Allen.

Additionally, culture is often the first thing that needs to change inside a locker room. Often times, we as fans forget that there are issues that extend beyond the football field that need to be considered.

Even though most people here hated Gase (I wasn't one of them), there's going to inevitably be a large portion of the current roster that didn't want to see Gase fired. There are going to be guys who are mad that they have to learn a new system, and doing so is especially hard for guys that only know one system.

Guys like Allen are the bridge between the new team leadership and the players. Contrary to what we like to believe, there are MANY voices in an NFL locker room, and some of the most important voices belong to players, not coaches. During a regime change, you absolutely need veteran players familiar with the new coaches in order to create the right culture.
