Finally some good news. Goodbye wide nine. Hello bear front. I like this change. Bear front takes pressure off the linebackers which has been our Achilles heel last few years with the wide 9.

Good move. Also the article mentions how we are bringing experienced consultants in Caldwell and Bielema with several decades of coaching experience between them to help out the inexperienced Flores/Graham combo. Good move as well.

Something gase and tbaum didn't do. These are some good signs. Finally.

First off, Travis did say that's all speculation.

Second, I don't know the formation names well enough to even have a fair opinion.

Third, I think Travis should stop trying to chase a writing career and find a coaching gig somewhere....even if it's at a local high school on the side. He knows his stuff and he has the passion.

I understand the Bear defense as having a safety down in the box on most plays? You stop the run first, then you have more options for blitzing when they have to pass. We really need another good outside CB in any event.

    Typical Dolphins Fan scenario:

Year XXXX, New coaches coming in.
    Fan:
"I cannot wait for the new coach to implement X system on offense/defense. Its the best system out right now!"

    2 years later....
    Fan:
"I'm so effing sick of coaches that just blindly stick to X system! We don't have the players for it! We need a coach that can adapt a system, tot heir players dammit! Screw Huzienga/Ross/next owner for always messing this up!!!!"

1 year later, Coach X has been fired and new coaches coming in......
    Fan:
"I cannot wait for the new coach to implement X system on offense/defense. Its the best system out right now!"

A Bear front just refers to a defensive formation that "covers"(lines up down linemen heads up or shaded over) the center and guards. The old "46" and a lot of the use of Bear fronts is to provide as much force as possible at the LOS(including a safety in the box), but you can also use it as a method of playing extra defensive backs, keep both safeties deep and without run fits, etc.

A lot of those influences cited by Travis there use a Bear front as a method of putting an extra DB on the field- because your interior gaps are handled by DL, you keep your DBs out of positions where they have to line up and play like linebackers and take interior gaps. That's the "Ruby" front in the article.

    LOL, Yeah sounds about right.

I will say I was never a fan of the wide 9. It leaves you open to being gashed in the running game and while its supposed to free up your edge rushers a little all it really seems to do is put them a step further away from the Qb.

The question I have is do we have the personnel to make the transition? Isn't this a good draft for defense?

You need to add guys, but I think you're doing right by the guys you have.

I think the big thing you need(and what's going to be kind of hard to find) is a Dont'a Hightower. Those 3-3 Bear fronts that the Packers and Patriots are using in the aforementioned article are based on Clay Matthews and Dont'a Hightower being able to move from a true linebacker in more traditional 4-2 type sub package to the 3-3 Bear fronts.

I was against the wide nine from day one. It's a flawed system which shouldn't be used on a consistent basis unless you have great linebackers that can do it all.

This is why I’m starting to get fed up with this forum. It’s the same thing every year from everyone. Wash, rinse, repeat. Gets boring after a while.

In fairness, it's the off-season, at least for us, so speculation is all there is. And this thread in particular is a speculative look at a possible defensive formation. And then the football season, like other sports season, is repetitive.

I've got a game thread open in the 'Other NFL' forum looking ahead to the Pats/Chiefs game. There's an interesting piece in there on Andy Reid.

As for the defense, I don't know enough about X's and O's or how the other NFL teams play to be able to predict what we might see. So I'm just going to live in hope that we smash some people in the mouth next year. Especially if we're rebuilding and we end up with a weak offense. Strong defensive play would at least make up for that a bit!

That's why I personally wanted to stick with Gase one more season...why not make sure he wasn't the guy by giving him a full year with his QB behind a starting line? If he's not the guy, then we have a good draft pick in 2020...if he is the guy then we don't have to worry about it anyway. I'd rather stick it out and break that pattern than automatically hitting reset.

I still think that Gase actually quit though....which makes that a moot point.

I know it is frustrating for a lot of the more knowledgeable Dolphin fans. There are a few posters here who know what's up, but not me. I don't have any real organized football experience so I have a hard time contributing anything substantial. I apologize. I have tried reading articles and stuff, but I am a hands on learner and have trouble visualizing the concepts from what I have read and what I see on TV. In the future, I will try and post less often. Perhaps, I will go into lurker mode.

You ain't gotta do that, everybody's perspective is valuable if presented in the right way.

Pose questions if you don't know. Answers will lead to a more informed entire fan base and community.

    Boom- you've contributed!

Football is a lot of basic logic and I think sometimes it's good to look at things from a different perspective than strictly x's and o's.

I personally have never felt like "This guy Surfs up has no clue" so don't be so hard on yourself.

I live in lurker mode...its my creepy dark home lol. Nothing wrong with that. I read this forum multiple times a day every day for almost a decade now...dang just realized how long its actually been.
Im not a big Xs and Os guy so I only really post when i have a question or feel I have something significant to contribute.
Whether the info is repetitive, or the hype train gets out if control and than crashes and burns, or a week goes by where its nothing but Dan and Hitman arguing over semantics....its the only place that actually gives a crap about our Miami Dolphins. Sh*t being on the military, this is the only place i know that even knows 5 dolphins players names.

So, post whatever you want as often as you want if its sharing some phins love.

Multiple defense is the only way to go in todays NFL. It's how Belichick has remained the ultimate competitor spanning two decades. Offenses are extremely versatile, and defenses must also be in order to compete on a weekly basis. Every single defensive scheme, front, coverage, etc. is vulnerable in some way or another; they all have weaknesses; there is no one answer. As soon as you settle on a specific front or coverage, you leave yourself open for the taking. The best thing a defense can do is be versatile, flexible, remove the comforts of the opposition, and dictate to the offense.

What's the chances of one of our fighters "accidentally" firing off a couple guided missles that just happen to target Brady's hotel room. I mean equipment failure happens all the time.

Good points. It was interesting listening to Romo yesterday. During key moments, the Patriots defense would go to cover 0. Romo pointed out that as good as Mahomes is, he is still a young QB who doesn't have the experience to check into a better play if need be. Conversely, Brady has practically seen it all and can check into a better play if need be. I would say situational awareness when it comes to game planning and play calling is key for any coaching staff. It bodes well for Mahomes that it came down to a 4th quarter comeback for the Patriots to win. That guy is truly special and will only get better and tougher to beat as the years go by!!!!

    .

I kind of understand where you’re coming from but what else do Miami fans have to get excited about? We’re in a constant state of rebuilding, looking for a franchise QB, building an OL while rarely going to the playoffs and/or even more rarely winning a playoff game

Great article. Really answered a lot of questions i had about the current personnel fit for a 3-4. It will be hard to make a scheme change and acquire all the right peices to fit in one offseason...esp considering our offensive line is still so bad...and dare a say... the new coaching staff might wanna draft their own QB to be handcuffed to.

I am curious to see how free agency and the draft shake out for us and what they feel is top priority. Young stud NT, 2nd CB, OG, QB, alpha WR.
