Funny you should bring this up. You do realize of course that Mike McCarthy's first year as HC of the Packers in 2006, it was Favre's last year in Green Bay and the Packers posted a mediocre record of 8-8.

In 2007, the Rodgers era began and it seemed the Packers were back on top, posting a 13-3 record but the following year, even WITH Aaron Rodgers, they posted a pitiful 6-10 record in 2008. Then 11-5, 10-6, 15-1, 11-5, 8-7-1, 12-4, 10-6, 10-6 and then this year, following his firing mid season, they finished 7-9.

Now, you want to toot the quarterback horn...all hail Rodgers. Sighs. Rodgers is a great quarterback. Not going to take anything away from him at all. He is great but not bullet proof. The TEAM failed 3 seasons with Rodgers at the helm.

Would I sell the farm for McCarthy? Hmmmmmm, maybe. Andy Reid was run out of Philadelphia, despite the fact he took the Eagles to 4 straight NFC Championships and a Super Bowl...and now it looks as if he could very well go back to the dance in Kansas City. We had better pray to God that McCarthy doesn't take the Jets' job because if he does, staying out of the AFC East basement is going to be quite the challenge.

I don't want McCarthy under any circumstances. Jim Harbaugh, if motivated and with Ozzy Newsome as GM put tough teams on the field every season. I think he is a good coach, but why are the Ravens considering letting him go? That concerns me. John Harbaugh is a flake. I believe his future is on TV, not the sidelines.

As far as "selling out" on FA's...I disagree. That has been the Phins M.O. since Shula got old. I want to draft BPA in the first round. Then BPA on the Offensive and Defensive lines for a couple of rounds, (unless they have a really high grade on someone who falls in the draft). I am willing to punt on this year if it means we have the foundation of young players and salary cap going forward.

The big plus from Reid was that he took the firing from Philly and learned from it. Adapted, changed and improved.

If McCarthy does similar, he can be a solid coach again. However, if he does not, then he will be trash. His problem in Green Bay was an utter inflexibility to change his offense and adapt to different players. He routinely tried to jam square pegs into round holes, didn't use his talent effectively and pretty much ignored the defense altogether. These flaws have been greatly amplified in the past 2-3 years as more of the longer tenured players have declined and gone out the door, most notably Jordy Nelson. The thing is, McCarthy was told this stuff many times, but completely failed to adapt and change. We will see.

That said, he apparently ONLY had interest in the Browns and Jets and may not end up with either.

To rebuttle andy reids eagles teams were stacked just like the cheifs n he got ran out cuz they couldn't winit all and it all got blown up....but im not dissgreeing with you i think good coaching and great players go hand and hand good coaches have the ability to make mediocre players play great as do great player make mediocre players play better....and yes i would go all in for mccarthy and antonio brown laveon bell and get this ship righted with flacco or Foles i personally think foles fits mccarthy system better than flacco

    TEAM: The San Francisco 49ers

    SEVERITY:[IMG]

SUMMARY: The San Francisco 49ers were quietly accused by other league members of skirting the salary cap during their dominant run from 1981 to 1994.

Despite the supposed restraints of the $34.6 million salary cap, the 49ers remade their defense and filled gaps on their offensive line to position themselves for a Super Bowl run. The complaints intensified after the signing of cornerback Deion Sanders, who was just one of San Francisco's eight key free-agent acquisitions, six of whom have been to the Pro Bowl.

    VICTIM: The entire league

    PUNISHED? No

PUNISHMENT: No evidence ever emerged to prove their infractions

The team was stacked with talent in the superbowl against marino.

I dont get why not mccarthy? whos left? Try and take a shot on a coordinator like we have how many times and how many times has it worked?...i dont get we have made 1 major fa signing in how many years? Suh?...im not talking big names...wallace was a product of pitts running game...antonio brown is a top 3 reciever in this league and if we matched him w grant amendola and or stills get a TE in the draft maybe add leveon bell with drake and try again and that offense with foles or flacco with mccarthy preferrably foles and that team puts up points a couple tweeks on defense and oline in the draft and that team is ready to compete right now hands down....mark it up division champions bye tom crybaby

He looks like a good db coach, not necessarily a good HC. No experience leading and managing an entire team.

Rizzi has head coaching experience and he was the assistant head coach last couple of years. No way would I hire a very green richards over Rizzi.

I would also be in favor of poaching a college HC over richards. We already tried the young inexperienced coordinator thing with gase. It usually doesn't work.

    Most coaching hires don’t work.

However among HoF coaches most of them were first time hires with no previous HC exerience. Good coaches rarely get let go before they get too old/too burned out. Sid Gillman is the only one I can think of in the HoF who got canned by his first NFL team and then went on to success. Bill Belichick will join him, but I consider that more to do with Art Modell moving the team than a poor performance by Belichek

Yeah I mean any time you have the chance to hire a dude with a losing record as a head coach, you gotta pull the trigger to get that "experience" going.

Like I said, pick your poison.

The interviews exist to ask first timers what kind of structure and organization they would bring, and to ask retreads what they would do differently to succeed this time. There really isn't a magic bullet that guarantees one better odds of success than another.

Don Shula as well, when we got him he already had experience as HC of the colts.

I just dont like the idea of hiring another inexperienced HC, and specifically richards or any of the top candidates except fpr rizzi dont strike me as good HC material. Richards is a position coach.

The Dolphins was the second gig for Shula. Of course he wasn't fired from the Colt but was "aquired" by the Phins.

Bruce Arians was the vet coach that I would have loved to see in Miami. Fangio as a vet defensive coach would have been worth a shot. I'm really nervous about another young coach who has to learn the team, find good offensive/defensive coordinators, learn to manage the clock, and so on.

Rizzi at least has some advantages in that he knows the team from an insider perspective, and he has seen a number of coaches come and go over the years so he should have his own ideas about what will work and what won't. He was kept through different coaching staffs because of the quality of his coaching and if he can translate that to the rest of the team? We will get the most out of the talent on the field.

I doubt any teams think, "Hey, we should check out all the Special Teams coaches and see if one of them is ready to be a head coach!" so Rizzi being overlooked and never interviewed is not a concern to me.

My biggest concern is who the hell worth a damn will be available as as coordinators with use basically playing the waiting game. Should they not hire Rizzi I suspect he will walk so now you have no coordinators onboard with very slim options out there.

Actually, with the exception of Rizzi, all 4 of their candidates are in the playoffs. Not only the top 2. Seems to me that last year The Colts hired McDaniels in the week before the Super Bowl only to have him back out afterwards and they ended up having to take more time to hire Reich. Doesn't seem to have hurt them very much since they are in the playoffs at the moment.
Let everyone else go rushing about for a change. A little patience will be good this time around.

Let's say it is Kris Richard, my guess of what his possible coaching staff looks like...

    Head Coach - Kris Richard
    Off. Coordinator - Darrell Bevell
    Def. Coordinator - Marquand Manuel
    Special Teams - Larry Izzo

I would assume Rizzi would probably leave if not getting the head coaching job. Izzo is currently the assistant special teams coach for Seattle. His hiring would make sense on so many levels.

Darrell Bevell was the offensive coordinator in Seattle during the time Richard was there. Bevell is currently interviewing for a few openings...I would assume Richard might like the familiarity.

Marquand Manuel was Richard's defensive assistant during the Seattle years. Manuel was just let go by Atlanta as defensive coordinator...he is looking for a job. Again, familiarity.

Just guessing on what connections Richard has.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised for Rizzi to stay. He's stayed on through 3 regime changes already, he's certainly well-settled here, comfortable doing ST stuff, there aren't any other HC offers out there for him, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Ross / Grier get a commitment from him tomorrow night along with a nice salary bump that he'll stay on if he can get along with whoever they chose. They'd prolly advise every HC interviewee that Rizzi is non-negotiable.

Do Shula was (a) already successful and (b) not fired. The Colts managed to convince the league that the Dolphins should give compensation despite (a) the negotiations happening pre-merger (b) the position in Miami was a promotion (from HC to HC and GM) and (c) Don getting an ownership stake in the Dolphins, the last 2 being conditions the Colts knew about and refused to match.

Doesn't surprise me. The dolphins always seem to do exactly what I don't want them to so. Flores is toward the bottom of my list of all the candidates available. His work on defense with the patriots is nothing special, even more after you consider how good their offense is.

Dolphins going to dolphin I guess. Let's see how it plays out, but I dont think our bonehead moves will stop with grier in charge, he was already a part of the problem.

We would be McCarthy’s last option is why i dont want him... he wanted the Cardinals job, Browns job and Jets job... they all passed..

McCarthy would be a typical Ross hire tho. I think he passes on anyone linked to Philbin
