Average isn't good enough because THill doesnt play to the average, especially on the road. You can't win with QBs who consistently falter when more is asked of them - at some point they need to make plays and put points up in tough situations. At some point, the situation will become less than ideal and that's when the best QBs make plays while THill takes a bad sack or a fumble or int. That's just who he is.
I mean, like I said I agree we should move on. I just think with his cap hit being large regardless, maybe you draft a QB to take over midseason or something rather than throw a kid who probably ismt ready to the wolves. We could also sign Bridgewater and do that too.
Addition by subtraction. Sometimes you just have to do it. We did it with Suh and this team MUST do it with Tannehill.
If we are moving on we need to do it and cut ties. Sign someone else as a bridge starter, draft a rook. If not drafting a rook high this year, then sign a guy like Bridgewater or Flacco.
It's just a personal thing. I just like discarding things at what I perceive to be the most opportune time. I totally get what you're saying though.
The most opportune time was several years ago. At this point, it's about shifting the paradigm, changing the team mindset and culture. Get new QB, work on the OL, build the defense. This would be my goal.
Average equals 6-10-10-6 ceiling. No thanks been there for the last 18 years.I would rather go 2-14 and have the pick of the litter in 2020.
I respect that, it's a personal preference. In my opinion though if the NFL has just become tank until you find a QB it just isn't worth watching to me. Id rather see a team that tries legitimately and fails. I dont believe in addition by subtraction unless it's a headcase. In the end, for my taste, which in the end means nothing, you can either improve a position or you cant...and I doubt we can this year.
Actually the reverse. The people defending him and wanting to see him behind an average offensive line number in the single digits on this site. Think about which scenario is best for the dolphins. 2019 sucks for free agent and draft eligible quaryerbacks. There is almost no chance you will be able to upgrade. Whoever your replacement will be is almost certain to be a downgrade. 2020 on the other hand is shaping up as a decent year to draft a QB. As of today we still have a poor defensive line and offensive line and need at least one cornerback. Why not spend 2019 shoring up the defensive line and offensive line. We keep Tannehill for another year with the idea we cut him or trade him in 2020. Now if we actually fix the oline in 2019 we know he plays better with protection and may actually draw trade interest If his play warrants it in 2020. And if he sucks, so what our next QB is waiting for us in the 2020 draft Now compare that scenario to what is likely to happen. Ross has probably made it clear he wants to draft a QB and cut Tannehill. Teams know they can save 19 million by waiting till he's cut so no trade offers and we eat that cash. Ok now we draft a QB in this crappy draft. Who? They all suck. Right now pre combine, were probably going to get the kid from Duke or Grier from West Virginia. Both of them are bust. Don't fool yourself thinking anything can happen. They suck as prospects. So now we have a rookie QB who plays poorly in 2019 but we chalk it up to being a rookie. The sophmore season is when you see the progress. 2020 comes about. When was the last time a team spent first rounders on quarterbacks in back to back years?. I can't remember one. So in all likelihood we bypass drafting a QB in the QB rich 2020 draft and draft other positions. Our QB continues to suck and we have to wait to start the process over until 2021. But now in 2021 our coach will be on the hot seat. Is he going to want a rookie QB in a make or break year? So welcome to Miami. We are going to cut a QB who plays poorly behind a poor oline but good behind a good oline to draft his replacement in a year that is bereft of talent and bypass drafting his replacement in a talent rich draft in 2020 all because we panicked and are impatient. The smart move is keeping Tannehill in 2019 which is why we won't do it. Instead well waste a first rounder on a QB with no chance to succeed and destroy our chances of drafting one that might actually help in 2020. Why? Because we are the Dolphins and that's what we do
Instead of trashing him with another poster why not take the time to reply to his most recent post? Classy DJ.
That's exactly the best path for me as well. Why bring in a QB to play behind a patchwork line? All QB's not named Russell Wilson will fail in that scenario....and everyone is asking for a downgrade from Tannehill. Unless the goal is to tank, there is zero logic in cutting Tannehill, receiving nothing in return and then spending the next 10 years hoping we somehow get lucky enough to draft Russell Wilson II. Just so we're clear here- - Brady would suck behind our line - Mahommes would suck behind our line - Brees would suck behind our line - Rivers would suck behind our line - Wentz would suck behind our line Do I have to keep going to fully illustrate this? Because I'll gladly name all 31 starting quarterbacks if that helps. The bigger point here is that Tannehill is average behind a poor offensive line. He's above average behind an average line. How would he play behind a good line? We have no freaking idea because we've never seen it for more than a series or two at a time. I fully agree that RT is not the long-term answer at QB. But I also GUARANTEE YOU that the next QB in line won't be either unless we draft ultra-heavy on the bubbas up front. The exact same thing can be said for Drake....he's a freaking superstar. Yet his numbers show he's a middle of the pack RB because of our line. Why not start the "fire Drake" chants as well and hope the run game improves? It's the same dumb logic.
Look I've never been the biggest Tannehill fan but he's not so bad you dump him. You keep him until you have someone better, and you go shooting for someone better right away. I mean, you can end up with a bunch of Jake Lockers, Gabberts, Ponders or god forbid Nate Peterman. Unless the new coach brings in a veteran and makes do, and we flip Tannehill for some first rounders, you don't just cut the guy.
I actually agree with Ross here. If you have to go 3-13 next year to build a long-term winner do it. And it's clear you're not going to build a long-term winner around Tannehill, so why keep him? I'd be totally fine seeing us get rid of players we know aren't long term solutions at their positions (e.g., Tannehill) while keeping those we're pretty sure are (e.g., Howard) and losing more games than we would otherwise. So bring along the Jake Lockers as a stop-gap. We're not making a SB run next year anyway, and there's serious psychological value to getting rid of Tannehill in that you show you're willing to make a clean break with the past. Who knows, you might be able to unload him and his contract to a team like the Jaguars. I'd keep Tannehill ONLY if he renegotiates his contract so that he makes only backup QB money because it's pretty clear he'd make an excellent backup QB.
I know, it’s hard for me to understand anyone who still believes in tannehill, sorry.. I’ll try better..
Imo, Hes done here..your gonna have to cut him at his salary, and I dont think you will get any compensation for him..
I am not sure we won't get any compensation for him.The Bills did get a 4th from the browns for taylor another average qb.
Again, the OL is not good. But OL play in this league overall is pretty damn bad. I can’t agree with the QBs u listed above not being good here. Also, I can’t seem to accept the fact that in 2017 our OL ranked in the top 10 in pass blocking and when Ryan was behind center it is averageing bottom 1/3 in the league. He isn’t that unlucky, his lack of ability to process things and awareness have contributed to making a bad OL look worse. He’s also PFF 32nd ranked Qb. While I can’t call him thebworst Qb in the league, there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that guy shouldn’t be the starting QB in Miami ever again. It baffles me we are still even having these talks. Even his biggest supporter on this site has saw the light and can’t be on board anymore. The Dolphins need a change of scenery and so does Ryan.
I say trade tannehill(Bill's got a 4th for taylor)take 13 mil.cap hit.Don't sign a qb and roll with Faulk or.fales.Have top 5 pick in 2020 draft and get the franchise Qb.
Again, I wasn't defending Tannehill in any way, shape or form. I want someone else. That someone will struggle though without some serious thought to our offensive line.
That's fine but you know that's not going to happen. You know our first rounder is going to QB this year.
Why not draft one, if they feel the QB is a valid starter? The next Aaron Rodgers might be in this draft for all we know. Or the next Wilson in the second or third round? The odds say there won't be a good-great starter drafted in 2019, but 2020 offers only better odds, not any guarantees. It is a guessing game to one degree or another. Keeping Tanny and improving the OL/DL should get us to 9-10 wins in 2019. Maybe good enough to sneak into the playoffs, but not good enough to actually win once you get there. Plus you are drafting late in the first in what is considered a good QB year. How does that help Miami long term? Cut Tanny, use the cap savings to booster the OL/DL, and see what a later round QB pick along with Fales/Falk can do in 2019. So what if you go 4-12 if it means you are in position to grab a QB in 2020? Or we shock the NFL world by winning 9-10 games with one of the above QBs and the arrow is pointing up as the young players mature and hopefully the QB gets better with more starting experience. If they draft a first round QB in 2019, just to have a new hope for the fans, that would be a HUGE mistake. I am hopeful that Grier knows better.
IF Murray goes? I thought it was a done deal and he will report the to the A's spring training camp. Needless to say, I was very disappointed when I read that. Murray is the kind of QB I was hoping for.
If Tannehill is out, I think the best course of action is to simply roll with Oz/Falk/Fales next season to get to a better QB draft. I get that it's always a gamble, but we're better off gambling in a draft with better odds.
This is my point. We have a draft that is rich and deep in defensive line, a main weakness of ours and piss poor in quarterback talent. The smart thing to do is put off drafting a QB until next year and go all in on drafting defensive linemen. Yeah we can pick up an offensive lineman or a QB in rounds 3 through 7. But the vibe I get is Ross wants a QB in the 1st which would be the dumbest move possible. And I'm not sure Grier is strong enough to stand up to him
If we're serious about a rebuild this is what I would do with an emphasis on getting Falk some playing time. See if there is any starter or backup talent there. I've kind of written off Fales and Osweiller can go for all I care
No doubt the fun part of the off-season is talking about the players we would all love to have as a fin. When I think of crazy strategies and the like, I have to keep reminding myself that Grier is a BPA kind of guy. Unless he surprises me, I think we are most likely going to take one of those defensive players in the top half of the draft. We need help with the OL, but we need to get value too and not pass up a blue chip player if one is there for us to take.
I think it's too soon to write off Fales....simply because he hasn't had any playing time against the 1's. He looks great against the 4's though! I do agree though with starting Falk (or Fales) and waiting until 2020 when the draft is deep with quarterbacks. Reminder- everyone said Tannehill sucked until they watched Cutler and Osweiler for an extended period. Well, odds are that any rookie QB will not be as proficient as Cutler or Osweiler....so be careful what you wish for. Tannehill will look like a stud compared to what you're hoping will happen and yes, it will set us back 5 years.
