I was posting this in another thread and decided to make it it's own topic so everything's in one place. Many of you have already read the rest of this post, so just jump down to the next one-

I watched the full Hard Knocks episode to get some context, so let me set up the entire situation for you before passing judgement-

    1) In practice that day, a lot of people were slacking. Blocking was a joke, people were lazily walking thru scrimmages and the coach was infuriated. Meanwhile, Landry made several amazing plays and appeared to be moving twice as fast as everyone else. The head coach singled him out several times for giving massive effort.

    2) Some players were getting mad at Landry for going so hard and they were talking trash. To my surprise, he responded with "Bless you." He explained that he's blessed for his talent and players who challenge him make him play even harder. So he wants God to bless them for helping him get better. This kind of shocked me because it doesn't jibe with the guy throwing punches last year.

Oh, and he was running the entire route tree and making great plays as well. I was surprised...shocked even.

    3) After practice, the coach screamed about giving full effort and people not working hard.

    4) Landry said what he said in the video after the WR meeting (which was directly after the main practice). Whether it was good or bad, I believe he did it trying to help the coaches and to step up as a leader. Maybe the message missed but his intention was good.

    5) Afterwards, Landry said that he rarely speaks up because he's not good with words. He felt the room needed to hear from a player though because there was no intensity at all.

As a side note, the head coach had two deaths in his immediate family within the last 2 weeks...yet he was still at practice like nothing was wrong. I think that really ate up Landry because the coach was so engaged in the worst of times and almost everyone else was slacking. Personally, I believe he was doing everything he could to help his coaches so they can win this year.

Watching the episode changed my mind about a lot of things- I might be a Landry fan again.

Here's a quick update on Hard Knocks. Episode two didn't share too much about Landry other than mention that he's catching everything in practice and working hard. He had a few minor moments in the show but nothing to really talk about. It did show him taking a dumb penalty in their 1st pre-season game though (he spiked his helmet after a big catch and then said he had no idea that was against the rules)

In episode three, the show starts with the teaser of Landry throwing punches and the entire team rushing in. They picked back up with the fight around the 12 minute mark and it shows a lot more detail than the video we watched online last week. Landry jumps up, launches the ball in the player's face and then charges while throwing punches. They immediately go to the ground and Landry's on top, throwing haymakers and screaming that the guy's not going to disrespect him like that. It takes a good 20 seconds to break them up and Landry stays angry for awhile after the incident.

Funny moment-a few minutes later, this big old bubba type player walks up to Landry and says, "You want me to take care of that for ya? I can go bless him if you want." The "Bless Him" theme was seen throughout the show with people either taking it as a mantra or using it to mock Landry. It was about 50/50 either way it seemed. It's pretty clear that "Bless him" actually means "knock the guy's head off and thank him for trying".

Side note- the coaches and players talk about this incident the rest of the game and overwhelmingly think it's a good thing. They say that they hadn't had that type of fire in practice in a very long time and it's great to see. People are playing angry because Landry set the tone and many there think it will make them a playoff contender.

From there they go to a review of PS game 2 and they focus quite a bit on Landry. He had a vicious crack-back block that set up a great TD play- I couldn't tell if it was a safety or a smaller LB, but they were coming through the C-gap (right around where the TE usually lines up) and turned towards the sidelines in pursuit right as Landry got there. Landry puts his shoulder pad in the guys chest while running full speed and it's one of those plays that make you smile from ear to ear. He absolutely laid this poor guy out....I had to watch it twice because I was too busy saying "DAAAAAAMMMMMMMNNNN!" the first time through.

Here's what got me though- everyone was celebrating the hit on the sidelines and congratulating Landry for the big block. He says something like, "I don't care- I want them all to hate me. Public enemy #1...let everyone hate me." A few plays later he was penalized for an illegal block and it sort of makes sense to me now- the guy gets himself fired up with a chip on his shoulder and he's looking to take someone out every play he's not getting the ball. He plays like he's going to war because in his mind, he actually is.

Landry rattled off 4-5 solid catches after the penalty and stayed vocal & engaged from the sidelines the rest of the game. That's the end of episode 3...and now you're all caught up.

I will add this- Cleveland did play with a ton of attitude and their defense was vicious. The only reason they lost was stupid penalties on both sides of the ball...otherwise, they pretty much shut their opponents down. They also got screwed on a couple of very important calls- for instance, they make the kickoff returner fumble and Cleveland recovered (w/ less than a minute left in the game), but the ref called it a dead ball issue that wasn't reviewable. That sucked because it cost them a great chance at the win.

They are playing with a lot of heart though and may surprise this year. Oh, and Mayfield seems like the real deal as well- he moved the ball nicely both games with several highlight throws.

Landry is the same guy he has been.

Some folks just like to play turncoat because it’s the cool thing to do.

Yeah, i think I had a pretty good grasp on who he was towards the end of last season- it's a love/hate relationship due to the work ethic combined with the penalties and fighting.

You know who he reminds me of? That kid in the movie Rudy who always dreamed of playing at Notre Dame. Landry obviously has a lot more talent but the fire is the same. It's impossible not to admire a player like that because he's the ultimate competitor no matter what.

Jarvis Landry is the wide receiver version of Bryan Cox that we had play for us back in the day. I liked the guy's attitude overall but there are times when it's detrimental. He's kind of like that friend you have in the group who always gets into fights. Eventually it gets tiresome

Yup, I completely agree. I had a friend like that growing up that was murdered over his temper last year- I actually told some of our stories in the Lounge section just to vent over it. I had never thought about it that way but you're right, people like that are just high strung and a loose cannon waiting to fire off.

Speaking of Landry... this is for the Venn Diagram intersection of people who think preseason means something AND that Gase misused Landry/we're going to miss him. Pretty sure there's quite a lot of you who fit that description.

So which is it? Is it "just preseason" now? Can't have it both ways.

Problem is we don’t know what bus will be next. A bus with a big ole pipe bumper on the front that hauls *** with reckless abandon like Landry, or a bus that breaks down every block, like Parker. Lol! :-)

LOL, I'm certainly not missing him- I just enjoy the inside look in player's lives. I was very vocal that I didn't want him on the team for the senseless penalties and Hard Knocks won't change that.

Right. It's not that people reevaluated their opinion of him after they had more information. I mean, you understand that's how people work, right? They have an opinion, they get more information, and that information can change their opinion.

He is a slot receiver and a diva at that..

Watch the crack block on the defenseless defender, after he makes it does he run to the guy that scores and congratulate him or did he pound his chest looking at the sideline gesturing “did you see me, that’s me that that did that”... his defender wouldn’t of made the play anyways..which one do you think Landry did?

He has been talked about so much I’m just done with the guy, he’s not worth the money someone was willing to pay him, he crapped on the team that gave him the ball more than anyone else, which tells me he’s a bit dumb and he bullied a woman in a violent fashion.

Fu## him, his dog, and the Diaz brothers..

He actually does a little bit of both- he did sprint to the end zone to celebrate but then he walked off the field like "Billy Badass" flexing and strutting. Then he goes into the five minute rant about wanting everyone to hate him, fear him, etc.

In an interview today, Landry said, "I feel like Gase sent me here to die." He then explains that Gase frequently says to players that anger him, "If you keep pissing me off, I'll send you to Cleveland!" Landry believes that he clashed with Gase because they were so much alike, both alphas trying to make their team better.

He also said that he went to Gase frequently asking what he could do to be more of a leader, to help the team, and Gase quickly grew tired of hearing it. Landry says Gase's response was, "Just trust me, I know what I'm doing." But Landry said it felt pretty obvious that Gase didn't trust him in a leadership type role.

Anyway, in the interview he said that he's embraced his new role in Cleveland and wants to help the city bring home another championship like LeBron did. I thought that was the craziest part of all- does he really compare himself in the same league (talent-wise) as LeBron James?!?

Sorry I can't link to the story- I read it on my smartphone at lunch. It's all over the major outlets though.

And I think that is a valid question.

Right... So from the middle of last season to today, many have changed their viewpoint of him. I'm sure there were people didn't really like some of his stuff, but put up with it because he was on the team. Now he's gone, so they don't have to overlook his crap, and they're glad he's gone.

This idea that is getting pushed that people just turned on Landry because he's not a Dolphin is simply not based on anything truthful.

He has an overinflated opinion of his game, he’s a bit## because of how he treated his woman, and he can’t play on the perimeter...all that equals not worth the money..

He could be a valuable piece to a championship team if he smartens up and understands his role, but he’s not smart enough to get there.

Well, I think it is pretty evident that most fans are way more accepting of things when that player has their fav teams jersey on.

It's human nature to support your roster.

It's just not my style personally.

Landry is not an elite WR but want everyone to believe that he is. He truly thinks he is the best WR in football and will celebrate minor accomplishments as if he just put the team on his back and carried them to a win.
Having the audacity to ask Sherwin-Williams to put his picture on the side of their building where once Lebron's was is just how great he thinks he is. Sherwin-Williams smartly turned him down. He has done NOTHING remotely close to what Lebron did.

That wasn't on Hard Knocks, but I think he was dead serious when he said it. I enjoy the show though because it gets me ready for the season and gives a 2nd team to kinda keep an eye on. I am watching partially for Landry but I really enjoy it either way.

My only problem with following Hard Knocks is that they sort of write their own storylines.

It's an entertaining show but often times the messages that the show sends don't line up with what you see on the field.

You'll watch a season and they'll have you believing that team is about to break out, win 12-games and go to the Play-offs and yet all you get is the same, crappy 3-win team.

It's supposed to be a glimpse behind the scenes but it's mostly just a reality show and by that I mean, it has elements of realism in it but it's not a reliable glimpse into what we'd call "the truth."

Yeah, they do make it seem like Cleveland is dominating and poised for a playoff run. To me that's part of the fun though- seeing if they live up to the hype and turn things around. Their defense has looked really good in pre-season so who knows....maybe they'll be competitive. There's already a contradiction though in the way they portray players in practice and what they've done on the field so far. So either they really stepped it up the past two weeks or they're over-hyping the heck out of their potential.

Last time i watched hard knocks was when Ireland did the wave with his hand to show Vontae where the door is out of Miami.

That season of hard knocks was embarassing for me as a dolphins fan. Showed that our priorities were in the toilet. From philbin picking up pieces of garbage off the floor like a janitor and ireland being an unprofessional prick for HBO, i couldnt take it.

Yoou also have to remember that the players/coaches know they’re being watched, and that alters their behaviour. And as you say the producers have to make a story out of each episode, so they will choose material that supports a narrativeover messy conflicted reality every day of the week.

I figured I'd give a final update- Landry only had maybe 2 total minutes of air time on the last three episodes and didn't really say anything. He did take a rookie WR under his wing and worked with him some after practice, and that kid ended up making the team. One funny part was that one of the other players made a spoof video of Landry's speech and put it to funny clips of players falling down, sleeping, etc....and everybody got a good laugh at his expense. It was all in good fun though.

One last thing- Cleveland's defense looked awesome in pre-season. I think they're going to be decent this season- maybe even above .500.

The video was actually hilarious. Whoever did that actually cut it together really well. So I'm assuming the player had someone do that for him but man, I give them credit...broken hand, two broken hands, broken leg, two broken legs. And I love when the receiver made the catch diving out of bounds with two casts on his feet..."you're moving at half-speed!"

I think one of the most telling aspects of Hard Knocks is what you end up seeing from a team's head coach.

I remember watching Philbin and thinking, I don't hate this guy, but he sure doesn't seem very inspiring. He seems like he's concerned with the roster and how he wants to shape that, but there was very little in Philbin for the players themselves to latch onto. He wasn't a particularly energetic figure, quite the opposite in fact.

I get a similar sense with Hue Jackson. He seems smart and prepared to evaluate the players. But he doesn't seem to have a lot of energy. He seems willing to speak to his team, but he doesn't seem to have an awful lot to really say. It's the same boring stuff about how his team 'has to play better' and 'has to speed up.' I don't get the sense that he actually motivates people through any of what he says.

Hue Jackson seems like a perfectly nice guy, but also one more apt to deal with front office personnel than with players directly.

Philbin was an embarrassment on Hard Knocks. He was terrified of his own shadow and seemed completely in over his head in a leadership position.
