Do you have children? What is their body language like when you are coming down on them? If people know they did or are doing something wrong, they aren't going to have positive body language in the moment. Doesn't mean it wasn't well recieved.
I watched the full Hard Knocks episode to get some context, so let me set up the entire situation for you before passing judgement- 1) In practice that day, a lot of people were slacking. Blocking was a joke, people were lazily walking thru scrimmages and the coach was infuriated. Meanwhile, Landry made several amazing plays and appeared to be moving twice as fast as everyone else. The head coach singled him out several times for giving massive effort. 2) Some players were getting mad at Landry for going so hard and they were talking trash. To my surprise, he responded with "Bless you." He explained that he's blessed for his talent and players who challenge him make him play even harder. So he wants God to bless them for helping him get better. This kind of shocked me because it doesn't jibe with the guy throwing punches last year. Oh, and he was running the entire route tree and making great plays as well. I was surprised...shocked even. 3) After practice, the coach screamed about giving full effort and people not working hard. 4) Landry said what he said in the video after the WR meeting (which was directly after the main practice). Whether it was good or bad, I believe he did it trying to help the coaches and to step up as a leader. Maybe the message missed but his intention was good. 5) Afterwards, Landry said that he rarely speaks up because he's not good with words. He felt the room needed to hear from a player though because there was no intensity at all. As a side note, the head coach had two deaths in his immediate family within the last 2 weeks...yet he was still at practice like nothing was wrong. I think that really ate up Landry because the coach was so engaged in the worst of times and almost everyone else was slacking. Personally, I believe he was doing everything he could to help his coaches so they can win this year. Watching the episode changed my mind about a lot of things- I might be a Landry fan again.
That day can't soon enough. My first born daughter is 1 month old today and I was thinking last night while watching the game that she will grow up in the world where their is no tom Brady/Bellecheck
As much as we loved juice, I lost all respect for him when he started talking smack about the team. Once I could maybe forget as ppl let thing slip when they are emotional. He went out of the way to slander the franchise and made it personal with RT. I am also immature but a bit older and have a different perspective. He got paid!!! (Way more than I think he is worth. Maybe 12 maybe even 13 but 75 mill 15/year for a glorified slot. They may use him on the outside) He got paid, he should have been the bigger man, do his stupid "bless you/team speech", but move on.
I actually don't miss him. I was going through highlights of the first pre-season games last night. There was a pass that he caught in one of the highlights, really nice play. I actually didn't know it was him as he wears a different number now. But after he caught it he got in the DB's face and my first thought was, "what an *ss". Then I realized it was him. I think he's getting worse. I think he's going to get even more penalties than he did here.
I didn't know know if he got flagged or not since I was onely watching the highlights, but it looked like he deserved a flag.
I think that he's so passionate and gets so caught up in the game & trying to win, that stuff just comes out. I honestly don't think you can ever coach it out of him either because nobody will ever tell him to lose that passion that makes him so successful. So it's kind of a double-edged sword....either you live with the awesome plays & stupid penalties or you don't. He's going with 100% all-out intensity from kickoff to the final whistle. I think I like him again to be honest...but I'm also glad he's gone. Heck, that may be why I like him.
Definitely full of himself, sure his Twitter name say's it all, and is increasingly disrespectful of his opponents.
I definitely got to the "don't" on the 'live with it or don't' decision. But I was happy for him getting the big contract and wished him well until he started all the lying and bad-mouthing. Now even that goodwill is gone. I had heard over the years from people who'd been in the locker room that the know him was to hate him. Maybe I just feel I know him a little better now.
I've heard the same thing...but I don't think it's him being a "jerk". There's a fine line between motivating people around you and being that annoying person who's always putting others down (while thinking you're helping to build them up). I think he's that guy. I think he thinks about winning 24/7 and can't understand why everyone else isn't as passionate as he is. When he tries to verbalize it, the words come out as "I'm better/smarter than you" instead of "I want to help the team be better." And I think he drove Gase crazy with his non-stop suggestions and insights. As I said, I'm glad he's not in our locker room anymore. But I don't think he was trying to insult Tannehill or anyone...he's just a bad communicator that wants to be a leader.
I notice the reviews of Clevelands' pre-season victory did not spend much time on Jarvis's two catches, except to say his longest catch lost half of its yardage due to his antics. I would describe their coverage of him as luke warm. This can't be good news for them.
I can't think of the sports show many of us here watched a few years ago with "Dr. D" as the sports psychologist, but I think that's what Landry needs to balance him out.
While I agree that he's a poor communicator, I also think he's very selfish. My guess is that's a big part of why people don't like him. While I believe he's about winning individually, I don't know that he cares as much about the team or anybody else beyond how it would benefit him individually.
i think this way of motivation/criticism is way better than kicking someone out of a huddle on the field!!!! just saying at least he handled it and kept it in house between the receivers it was noone else fault. I personally love his fire!!
So now we're going to criticize Tannehill for taking action? All I've heard for years is he was to laid back. And Landry was doing that on Hard Knocks. A TV series. Which he knew was filming. So no, he didn't keep it in house, nor was it intended to be.
That's the thing- you have no idea how much is genuine since we're basically talking about reality TV. Did a producer say, "Hey Landry, you should make a speech today...that would play great for the show!" We really have no idea and have to read between the lines to find the whole truth. I still have no idea how I feel personally, but I figured that I'd watch the rest of the Hard Knocks season to figure it out. I do respect the guy's work ethic though.
Well i mean acting like a kid since someone missed an assignment is not taking action thats a cry for help has some underlining issue behind him to me, a simple talking to on the sideline could have done the trick but a blow up in front of the whole team when a guy is trying to make an nfl team, how many assignment is RT going to miss this yr my guess is alot more than 1 so if yelling at a rookie is taking action then by all means accept it, you must never been a good leader or on a team with 1, rookies are the most fragile guys on a team they can make you or break you and a flip out over 1 miss, i could understand if it happened 10 times then ok but 1 miss and you scold him like hes your kid thats just bad team building already specially from a qb, I just hope it was an isolated incidence in all honesty maybe the heat or the pressure is getting to RT this is his yr or hes old like old trash. Either way it was a bad look for RT. and your right it could have been for the cameras that could be 100% why he did it, but if he does it with them off then i love his fire
The hate for Tannehill is still so strong. You're telling me Marino wouldn't rip a guy for getting him sacked? Brady? Rodgers? Just stop with this ****.
well in all respect RT isn't even in the same galaxy as any of those guys RT has had no production for him to act like that is all im saying. If it were brady rodgers marino any of them after 7 years in the league I'm sure it wouldn't even make the news.
Tannehill pissed blood because of poor blocking and he's taken a f'n beating for years, but kept on getting up for the next play. I think he's earned the right to raise a little heck when someone misses a blocking assignment.
its practice for one, if RT can see it coming (which is his job) you know you have a rookie, i have seen peyton manning countless times at denver look at cj anderson and monte ball and literally grab em on the shoulder pads and say you have that guy right there and point. Even lineman make mistakes on blocking it happens, but you cant jab a rookie like that and RT should know that what if that dude just misses a block on purpose in a game to pay RT back and it knocks RT out again that's it for RT so maybe RT should be a little more cautious who he kicks out a huddle just saying.
This mentality is pretty ludicrous. You're actually defending the guy who messed up, and arguing that the guy who didn't mess up should be the one being cautious. No, the rookie missing blocks is the one who should be getting his *** chewed out. Also, HOW DO YOU KNOW that the rookie hadn't been missing assignments, and that one was the last straw for Tannehill? I mean, I know it's popular to ride Tannehill on this site, but given Tannehill's usual demeanor, maybe there was something else there, not simply one missed block.
I will share my sure to be unpopular opinion on this. I don’t like manufactured leadership, If it isn’t authentic it’s hard to make work. I blame the Dolphins for this. Why do you NEED him to be a leader? Why are you pushing him to be a leader? If it isn’t in his DNA which it clearly isn’t, then stop trying to force it. There are plenty of QBs who have been successful and lead by example as opposed to being vocal because they were asked to be. In regards to the incident with Ballage? I like what he did, holding a player accountable. But I also praised Jarvis for his fiery talk with the Browns. I think if you were angry with Jarvis for his talk in the locker room but okay with Ryan doing that on the field then you simply just hate Jarvis, love Ryan Tannehill or both.
So slot boy got into a fight at browns practice, the guy was in coverage, and had to kind of walk over slot boy when he hit the ground, slot boy did not like that, got up and threw the ball hard in his face, they went at it..
