or having a little faith that his wife might find those spare keys, which she ended up finding EVEN through all the craziness that was going on with her husband after he had his accident. And grabbing a butcher knife?

Now, I have two kids, 2 and 4, and I know where they are... I'm never going to forget them in my car. At the moment we live in a condo complex and if one of us forgets something in the house, the other one stays with the kids who are all buckled up in the car. It's not rocket science.

Nobody deserves to die for their stupidity, well unless they end up killing someone else in the process. But there seems to be a little natural selection going on here.

Its easy for me to sit in this chair, and say thats dumb. I don't know what kind of car they owned, or how hard the windows are to open from the outside. The bottom line is that now there are 2 children without a father, and thats really sad!!

    Tell that to his kids.

I don't think this is natural selection at all. He was not doing anything stupid. He had nothing but his kids in mind when he ran. He died being a father. Sure he probably over reacted and thought instinctively, but I don't think that even remotely deserves any kind of Darwin Award. If I were a father, I would have something similar, although hopefully I would drop the knife first. It was a freak accident that had an extremely tragic ending.

That's rough the guy was just trying to move fast so his kids wouldn't be harmed. I don't think any of us can say what we would or wouldn't do if faced with the same frantic rush to get that car open. Tragic accident.

If it were me, I probably would have overreacted too, but I think I would have went with something that probably wouldn't kill me if I fell on it. Like a brick.

Yea, I would have broke the glass before trying to use a knife. And how long were the kids alone, someone couldn't just go wait "with" them? Yes it is tragic, but anyone who tries to pry open a window with a butcher knife (which would likely bend or break before the window anyways) was attempting to do something stupid. Not saying they were stupid, but what they were going to do was.

Sad, but reminds me of the blonde joke....who got locked inside her car for 4 hours until a good semaritan came by and picked up her keys on the outside and unlocked the door for her.

I think people are jumping to a lot of conclusions by calling this guy stupid. For all we know the wife was standing next to the car looking for her spare key in her purse. The guy decides to find something to pry open or even break the window in case she doesn't find them. He sees the thick bladed butcher knife. Maybe it was an older car or the window was already loose. Either way as he's coming down the stairs he trips or slipped and fell on the knife. It didn't say he was running or panicking. He just fell. I imagine most people who have ever walked have at one time or another fallen. I don't see how this makes him an idiot.

Opening a car door with a butcher knife? This just shows how important it is to keep your head in situations like this. If it was hot outside they could have called 911. (My sister locked her baby in by accident in jacksonville in the middle of the summer a few years ago and had the presence of mind to do this, so don't try to tell me that parents can't think straight when their kids are in danger) If it wasn't hot pretty much any locksmith will open a cardoor with kids inside for free. This is a tragedy that could have easily been avoided. What a shame.

So you think he was just walking down the stair and fell on a butcher knife? That seems highly unlikely to me. I would bet a lot of money that he was moving down those steps at a high rate of speed. He was 22, most 22 year olds don't just fall for no reason. I'm almost 29, I've never fell walking down steps even once in my life. Have you?

I mean if a step collapsed or something that would be different but as far as I can tell it was a normal set of stairs.

I'm not calling him stupid, but I do believe he was running and if he would have kept his head he'd still be around.

Call me old-fashioned but yeah, this is pretty stupid. Of all the things I would consider doing in a situation such as this (like waiting for the wife to find them, asking the wife to empty her purse on the sidewalk, kick a window in, kick the wife for forgetting where she put the damn spare keys ...) grabbing a large butcher knife would be pretty much dead last on my list of ideas that aren't totally bonkers. I just can't fathom how a) "my kids are in the car and I need to get in" leads to b) "I need a large butcher knife".

I said I've never fallen down stairs. Maybe I've stumbled a little at some point but that's pretty much it. I'm not understanding what's so difficult about going up and down stairs if you're a healthy adult.

Actually, in the case of the side windows, they just break into such tiny pieces that it's virtually impossible for anyone getting more than a scratch at best (or worst). In the case of the front window, it usually stays together until you kick it out of the frames. It's certainly a lot safer than getting involved with butcher knifes ...

Breaking glass would have been my last resort right above butcher knife though.

I still don't see what's wrong with waiting for the wife to find the darn keys. Or, like, helping her. I mean, sure, people sometimes don't think rationally in these situations and do all sorts of things that they probably wouldn't do if they thought it through - but that's kinda the definition of acting stupid, isn't it?
