How much of a Diva was Landry?

Landry is a very good player and a dumbass all rolled up into one. Why on earth does someone need to slam their helmet into the ground after a TD for a 15 yard penalty?

honestly feel Landry deserved a hefty contract, he didn't miss a rep while he was here, and that strength and dependability he has in his body should be accounted for.

15 a year, I don't know what the browns were thinking for a true slot receiver..

I disagree with this notion that the offer wasn’t low ball relative to the players market. He was never gonna take slot money when he was tied for the league lead in receptions his first 3 years and one of the most receptions thru 4 years players I believe of all time. I may be off on the latter part of that.

Either way slot money only with that kind of production would be foolish.

His durability and consistent week in and week out production deserves a bump. Unlike Robinson who was coming off an acl or Watkins who has been both inconsistent and injured and yet each found $14 mil per.

However I do agree that if Miami truly wants to run this high tempo offense we don’t need to pay a guy with Landry’s skill set $15 mil per. Only guy that comes close to warranting that would be dvp and thats talent based more than anything else to date. That said we do have $14 mil combined in Albert Wilson and Amendola. So it’s not like miamis skimping on the slot skill set despite the scheme and tempo likely driving a lot of the production in 2018

Cleveland’s buying into juice suiting up every week 80 plus catches 12 yards per clip and 6 plus tds per season with that contract and a 3rd down primary sticks concept option and I see no reason that they shouldn’t. He can give them that level return.

Looking only at his number of receptions is silly, imo, you have to look at ypc, yac, and tds, not simply some volume stat.

Right, but if they were still here would they be getting described as "fiery competitor" vs "diva"?

The whole thing is a little comical to me, because I argued Landry wasn't worth over about 10 million, and I was in the minority on that opinion, now he is gone and I'm the one defending him as a football player??? How does that work?

What's there to defend? He was a limited receiver who couldn't control himself fully. After the past two seasons I hopped off the Landry train, especially once it was clear he wanted to receiver money.

I’m sure there are some stats out there, I’d be really interested to see how many of his 100 catches came at or behind the Los, The kind any receiver could make.

You tell me! The guy is overrated and it seems you agree with that!

Here are some things about Jarvis Landry:

    1. Consistently a garbage player in the 1st half of games. On a 16-games basis we're talking 126 targets, 91 catches for 787 yards, 3 TDs. That's all four years he's been in the league, his entire career, 6.2 yards per target, 8.6 yards per catch, not even a particularly high catch rate (72%) for a slot.

    2. Generally heated up only in 2nd half of games, with defenses no longer fresh, offensive adjustments being made, usually trailing on the scoreboard so the spacing is more generous. I'm just telling you what he's good at. For his career on a 16-games basis we're talking 159 targets, 110 catches for 1,218 yards, 8 TDs. That's 7.7 yards per target (better, but still not 'good') and 11.1 yards per catch.

    3. The only efficient full year he's ever put together was 2016.

    4. Daniel Jeremiah took a look at all the touchdowns he scored in 2017 and came away more impressed with how Adam Gase schemed him open, as opposed to Landry making impressive plays.

    5. I had been hearing for YEARS before he was traded that contrary to popular belief, he was not a technician, continued to be a guy that was loose with the details.

    6. When Landry has been targeted 10+ times in games, the Dolphins had a 9-22 record, scoring an average of 17.1 points per game. When they targeted Landry 6 or fewer times? They were 16-3, having scored 27.5 points per game.

He was what he was. He was a good slot receiver, particularly in the second half of games. He was hopeless running anything deep unless it's a scramble drill. He caught a bunch of passes because Ryan Tannehill has a career tendency to over-use guys that work the slot, guys that stay close to the line of scrimmage and work the easiest passing lanes to see and fit the ball into. He was unusually good at breaking tackles and doing stuff after contact, but not ridiculously so, and the team was generally better off when they didn't target him much.

I don't care for Fahey but he absolutely called out Landry for being schemed opened, before Gase got here. And the NFL100 guys said the exact same thing. That's a lot of people watching film coming to the same conclusion. And yes that #6 stat was what I was looking for.

It's opportunity cost. You can only have so many attempts. Then those attempts are at the LOS or slightly above ...

Not hardly. 2016 numbers are the only ones anyone should really be gauging the player on. In terms of value and ceiling. That’s the only year both the qb and play caller were competent. Throw out the short passing game by design neutered qb (which I first outed on another site by the way) lazor trash o and burn in a barrel the cutler execution and results.

As for scheme based td production in 2017 with juice I agree there was a good amount of that. But this offense is highly scheme based production anyways unless it’s a clear out for iso which juice was damn good at.

Anyone want to tell me Albert Wilson’s production wasn’t highly scheme driven in kc? The hell it wasn’t.

Kenny stills good 1 on 1 looks are highly scheme driven too. How often you seen him deal with rolled coverage?

I agree with your points, its why I never wanted to pay him big money. I do think he is possibly one of the better slot receivers in the league with good hands and a willingness not to shy away from contact.

I'm just not sure that he was a cancer in the locker room, nor do I feel like he is going to fall apart in Cleveland. Its nothing more then that for me. My general opinion of his skill set and personality hasn't really changed now that he isn't a Dolphin.

    We agree on that.

I'm just saying I don't see it as likely that we try to get a contract done if we believe him to be a locker room cancer. He wanted more money we made the smart decision not to pay him that ridiculous amount.

I also don't believe he is going to fall apart in Cleveland. He is what he is, a really good slot receiver that is missing the pieces to be elite in the NFL.

In past years when Jarvis Landry scored a touchdown it was almost always because Jarvis Landry was doing something REALLY good on the play.

That just wasn't the case in 2017.

Every single one of these plays were excellent from schematic and play calling standpoints. But only a couple of them ALSO featured a wide receiver doing something that not every wide receiver can do.

You make a good point. I don't see him doing as well in Cleveland this year, but with all the talent they have surrounded them selves he may do well. I just can't believe he will see as many passes, IMLTHO.

everything I'm talking about in reference to Jarvis is about, relative worth, is he worth 15 a year, and did he have poor leadership skills.

    no and yes..

The guy was a good slot player but couldn't work downfield much and couldn't work on the perimeter...much easier cover in both instances..

Well Mike Wallace said, after he left, not in a bad way, that Tanny kind of keeps to himself. He's not going to be buddy buddy with his WRs or teammates I think. He's a good guy, nice guy, but they're not all going out and raging at the clubs with good sh** from Pouncey.

Hopefully now that he is, everyone can be on the same page. Outside of Amendola, the oldest WRs on the team are only 26, and Stills & Parker both seem to get along with RT. Gesicki and Smythe seem to be pretty tight with one another already, and we've seen Gesicki going to RT for advice.

I know i will get backlash for this, but we do have some pretty strong evidence that Ryan hasn't been the most liked guy by his teammates.

Seems like a lot of noise from teammates throughout his regime, be it white noise or not, diva WR or not, practice squad guy or not.

Before you guy's try and light me on fire, just know that I don't think being "close" with teammates is some necessity to being successful.

I'm getting pretty tired of Landry quickly. He got his 75 million, supposedly loves his QB's and team why is he so butt hurt? This is obviously the case based on his salty comments. I lobbied hard for us to keep him and have always defended his value despite the incident he had with his baby mama. Like I said there was no conclusive strike in the video but it looked like he chest bumped her and ripped her cell phone from her hand. I know don't treat my lady like that.

Bottom line I wish Jarvis could just move on and be happy like he supposedly says he is. He should take lessons on how to act from Ryan Tannehill who will say nothing despite being brought up by Landry twice in the last 2 weeks. Landry's immaturity level seems to be as advertised.

Sadly, being an insufferable loudmouth d-bag gets you into the media and makes you more popular with the national fans. Especially at the WR position.

His buddy Beckham missed the whole season, and is still everywhere on TV. Dez Bryant had 69 catches and got cut, but he's still in the news all the time.

Meanwhile, Larry Fitzgerald was second in the league in catches, at age 34, with a much better average, he's a model citizen and all around likable guy, and you rarely hear from him. Michael Thomas of the Saints had one of the best year's of any WR, and I have no idea what his personality is. You hardly ever see anything from Julio Jones or Aj Green.

Flash and noise gets the attention. Everyone wants to be the next Randy Moss, Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens.

Michael Thomas is a STUD. His work ethic was always praised here in Columbus, however even I didn't see him being so good so early. Braxton Miller and JT Barrett throwing you the ball will kind of do that though.

Watch out for Paris Campbell, he is just now getting out of having JT throw him the ball. That's a plus for any WR.

I think it depends on the same things it’s depended on Miami in terms of how his season will go. Qb play primary and to a lesser extent given I think hue Jackson calls a quality game play caller.

I know rg3 blows. What’s baker mayfield gonna do? Questions that need answers.

I’m sure there will be plenty of rpos with juice working the middle of the field off of.

    Agreed.

Hard not to get the impression that he just rubs some people the wrong way for whatever reason. You don't see such blatant down talking by former teammates very often.

It's always a classless move to talk ****, however at what point do we stop being "fans" and start to wonder if the problem isn't always someone else. And who care's if Ryan is a disengaged ******* to his teammates. Aaron Rodgers was labeled the same type of guy before he became so GD good that people wouldn't dare speak out against him.

To me? I think he must have some sort of issue relating to his teammates, but I also don't think thats a bad thing.

Maybe they hate him because he looks like a Ken doll and has a barbie wife? I dunno, but something certainly seems up.

I think a lot of it had to do with the fact the team knew/heard Philbin and Lazor blame Tannehill for a lot of issues. Hard to be highly respected by the team in that situation.

But you're right, it is worth discussing. I know, just off the top of my head, his good friends on the teams have been guys like Long, Fasano, and Albert....pretty low-key guys, probably match up well with a guy like Tannehill who is private and seems to spend most non-football time with his wife and baby. He was married when he was drafted I believe.

Then I think of people linked to "ripping" him. Miko shouldn't even count IMO. Hartline was just at some Dolphins event hanging out with RT, so it seems maybe that issue was fixed. Wallace said he "needed a good QB" when leaving the Vikings....so maybe that's just his kind of thing. Chris McCain (with the practice squad trophy) very emphatically supports Tannehill online, says he loves the guy and thinks he is wildly underrated.

Landry thinks he is the best WR in football. He hears non-stop about having 100 catches for 800 yards and I am sure it drives him nuts. There's pretty much only one other person you can blame. I think this is a defense mechanism. Obviously he didn't hate being around RT that much as there's many photos of them hanging outside of practice and they seem pretty happy.

Juice made a point to come over and give tannehill encouraging words on the bench after he tore his knee up and was lost for the season. They even hugged it out. So I’m not really buying into this we aren’t friends thing.

I wouldn’t rule out a guy like gase advising tannehill even not to contact juice once he was traded. Gase strikes me as a control freak personnel wise.

I think those words from juice are more a shot over the bow of gase.

Juice knows who butters his bread now so of course he’s gonna talk it up. Cleveland’s qbs Cleveland’s locker room yada yada yada.

I don’t much like this Jarvis can’t get vertical talk. He can it just comes from the slot.

Is he a fit for a more true vertical passing game? No. That’s more jakeem grants ideal

He's just fake. When he's here, he's Tannehill's best friend. He's calling Ryan "fam" and going on fishing trips with him and stuff. Taking pictures of just the two of them and posting them on instagram saying "I love my teammates!" As you say, one of the first ones to go console Ryan when he hurt the knee. Or in 2017 after a bad game, talking with Simon about how much he misses Tannehill.

But when he's in Cleveland he's saying that Tannehill wasn't a good leader, that he never had a good relationship with Ryan, and complaining that Ryan hasn't called him.

Thing is, that was in response to a question whether Ryan reached out to him to talk about the disparaging comments Jarvis had previously made about Cleveland's QBs being better than anything he had in Miami, and his complaining about how Ryan never brought he and the receivers on road trips to go work out somewhere like the Eli Manning does with Giants receivers at Duke or like Tyrod Taylor did with the receivers in Miami a few months back.

I don't care if you say something about your current QBs, the guys that are buttering your bread, are the best you've ever had, yadda yadda yadda. Talking up your teammates is fine. He went further than that and actually LIED. He started explicitly complaining that these other QBs get their receivers together and work out with them and Tannehill is just not that sort of guy.

Except there's actual proof that Tannehill did exactly that, organizing Jarvis and other receivers for private workouts together. And the proof was on Jarvis Landry's own instagram! That is to say, UNTIL HE DELETED THEM.

It's all just bull ****. He's a fake person. I don't know if it's the business of the NFL that does it, or the $75 million contract, or whatever. But he's turned into a fake guy.

Yeah but dink and dunk is like page 1. The outlet. The bombs Ryan throws to Stills, DVP, and Grant are like page 237 or something. Blah... who am I kidding... I have no idea if Landry knew all the plays or not, but if he had that ability why was it so rare for him to be open downfield like the others? I don't know but I tend to think Landry simply didn't have the speed and technique for longer, or more complicated routes.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this year, despite all the shake-ups. Ryan seems like a very cerebral dude. He may be a bit quiet in personal settings, but I bet he's right there when the action is on. And to me I see cerebral, somewhat quiet guys tend to make the best leaders in the long run. When they speak, people listen and it's not in vain. Rt is in infancy with developing chemistry with Amendola, Wilson, and G-Sick. But the seeds are in the ground and when he starts hitting them with bombs in live games, the chemistry is going to get thick. It'll become much more natural versus the almost forced leadership that can be a bit awkward in the beginning when you are working among a whole group of alphas. But you have to break the horses before they are tamed. With his experience, toughness, talent that is becoming more refined, and with a group around him that can play at the speed he and Gase have been preparing for since before his injury, I think Ryan might be ready to put on a show for us and surprise many this year. I for one, am hoping he brings us some big *** grins.
