I hate to say this, but your pool builder lied to you on that front. It's a common scheme by liner companies to push their product. I have one at Lifetime Fitness Cary, NC from 2016 as proof.

Liner's are certainly not bad pools by any means however, and about 25% less for you to build.

Get a salt-water system if you haven't yet!!

A ton. First and foremost you have to weed through the ruff and find a reliable, honest builder. What city, state do you live in as I have friends in the industry.
