I think this is implying BPA. I agree completely with that approach.

    Florida
1st round - Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia
    2nd round - Will Hernandez, G, UTEP
3rd round - Tremaine Edmunds, OLB, Virginia Tech
    4th round - Braden Smith, G, Auburn

    Alternative Draft
1st round - Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
2nd round - Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina
3rd round - Dorance Armstrong Jr., OLB/DE, Kansas.
12/16/17: Armstrong has an excellent skill set, but it was hard for him to illustrate because the team was so bad around him.
    Source: http://walterfootball.com/draft2018OLB.php
Some scouts have him ahead of Malik Jefferson, OLB/ILB, Texas in the 2019 draft. He might be a steal in the third round.
    4th round - Isaiah Wynn, G/C/OT, Georgia
5th round - L.J. Scott, RB, Michigan State

Bradley chubb DE, Andrews TE , Edmunds LB, Billy Price C/G, Later rounds: Jerome baker LB, Auburn running back
Kamryn Pettway. Anthony miller WR.... Man crush list. This is a dream for me. If billy price comes available in the second round I take him and get a TE later. Getting chubb might seem like a dream now but QB happy teams are gonna start reaching for the stars. We might end up in a position to have exactly who we want. I like defensive ends who can make an impact on running downs as well. Chubb has that dog in him and i want that on defense. If we could trade down in the second and get an extra pick, I would do it but for the right price. Hell if we trade some players for picks i would do it ... looking at you kiko.

The most relevant to our position:

It's not like we don't know this. Any time that we beat the Pats its because Jason Taylor, Cam Wake and other front personnel get pressure on Brady consistently. Rattle him early, then keep him on his toes.

Assuming we give Tannehill a shot post injury (which seems the likeliest conclusion right now), the other key to winning the division and making a playoff run will be to pressure Brady. Hopefully Harris takes a step up to full time starter next year and posts a 10+ sack season, but would it be such a bad thing to devote our first rounder to a passrusher? Bradley Chubb, Arden Key, Marcus Davenport and Clelin Farrell are all highly regarded. It is highly likely that at least Chubb and Key are gone by 11, but the others we have a shot at. Throw in DT's like Vea and Payne and you have some options.

Round 2, a dude like Shaqueem Griffen who can cover and get after the QB might work as well.

Ultimately ... does Quentin Nelson help us beat the Patriots? I don't see it as well as I can see a Davenport posting a 2 sack + multiple hurry up.

He helps by helping control the LOS, run the ball better, pass protect better, sustain more drives, hence keeping the D on the sideline longer.

I am, surprisingly, aware of what the position of guard does! We could do your little run through for literally every position including Punter. Does that mean we take a punter in round 1?

In this specific context, how do you beat the Pats 2-3 times in a season (plus Pittsburgh, Jacksonville or whomever you want to throw in the mix)? Either have an elite QB or have an elite defense. Nelson is neither an elite QB nor an elite defense. Tannehill is, imo, neither elite nor will get to that level. He can be perfectly acceptable (barring injury/regression) with an elite defense (ala Minnesota, Jacksonville).

Draft people who can ****ing plant Brady in the ground and make him cry for retirement.

When those teams settled on their QB's they moved their focus to building the entire team, which included solidifying the offensive line.

You're argument here seems to suggest we need to find a single player to turn our fortunes, when the absolute opposite is the approach that should be taken. Because, again stating the obvious, no single player has ever defeated a team. Just because you don't draft some of these positions on you fantasy squad doesn;t mean they should be neglected b/c you perceive their impact to be les than what it really is. Nelson is a phenomenal lineman and would instantly turn a side of a line into a strength.

The thing is, we don't have a chance at him anyways, because other organizations also recognize his impact on their teams, and he will be a top pick.

I wouldn't take Nelson even if he does get to our pick. One lineman - while valuable - is not equivalent to nearly any other position in terms of impact.

No one player in the draft will change our fortunes, but drafting defensive players imo will have the biggest impact and best chance assuming that we stay with Tannehill.

Note I am saying we should neglect the guard spot, but I would rather fill that through free agency or a lower round pick. We could stand to upgrade, definitely. A first half of first round draft pick is not the resource to use on the line.

Then act like you have some awareness, and don't make stupid comments like there is any reason to take a punter in round 1. Dominating the LOS is the best way to beat any team, including the Pats.

Sure thing broseph. That's why every first round pick the last 20 years have been nothing but offensive lineman right?

Not sure why people have a hard time with the concept that - at equal play levels - a guard is worth less on the team than a defensive end. Just like a punter is not equal to a guard. Just like a QB is worth more than anyone else.

Yeah.. one easy way to provide evidence for this is to just look at the salaries in the NFL by position.

Pretty obvious that teams value guards less than DE and more than a punter. And nothing compares to QB. I know that's just "10 highest" but you get similar relations when you look at overall averages.

That does not mean however, that a team with a glaring weakness at OG should not draft one at 11 overall when that player is regarded by many if not most scouts as a potential All-Pro. The symbiotic effect a guard like Nelson could have on the entire team makes him well worth considering at 11, if he is on the board.

True. Of course the Dolphins have more than one glaring weakness at different positions. Personally, I'd prefer a great LB over a great guard if it comes down to that.

Agree, but he won't be. The NFL recognizes the significance of a great lineman and he'll be scooped up very early.

I doubt he lasts to 11 too. Though I have seen mock drafts from the various media having him anywhere from 6th to 18th.

11 is pretty early when maybe 4 qbs go in the top 10 no?

The Dolphins were one of the worst in 2017 at sustaining drives. That helped wear down the D as the season went along. Nelson helps the offense run the ball better, and would do a lot to keep Ryan upright. More 3rd down conversions and the defense stays fresher. Getting a blue chip LB would be great, but is Roquan Smith as much of a can't miss at his position as Nelson is at his? Is Tremaine Edmunds?

We were terrible on both offense and defense (ranked 28th in offense and 29th defense by points), and statistically speaking each unit helps the other similarly, though the effect isn't that big (correlation is only about 0.15 depending on chosen stats). So I don't think it's easy to argue we should help one unit out more than the other.

IMO it comes down to relative value of position multiplied by relative ability of player at that position. The graph in post #136 gives you one way of estimating the relative value of the position. What the relative abilities of different prospects are? Who knows.. I leave player evals to others.

Nelson is phenomenal. He's a top 10 pick easily or so I'd predict.

I agree with your line of thinking.. the draft should be played safely... over time accumulating solid players is the key

I have some things in mind the phins could do with their 11th pick. IF my premier prospects, Quenton Nelson and Roquan Smith, will be gone and none of the superb QBs is available, the Phins should downtrade with the Cardinals to spot No 15 for an additional 3rd round pick and, for example, Arizonas OT D.J. Humphries, who can play LT or RT as well. Then the Phins can pick Trey Edmunds (Virginia Tech, LB) in the first round, pick Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State) in the second round and try to reach for Mark Walton and a TE in the third round (maybe Troy Fumagalli). Then the Phins will have to additional picks in the fourth round where i would try to pick Van Smith (Safety, Clemson) and an additional DB. That should do it in combination with free agency (where I would go for NaVorro Bowman, Trey Burton, Josh Kline, Patrick Robinson, Paul Richardson (Seattle) as a replacement for Landry.
