Sources with knowledge of the talks say Florida had agreed to the three-way deal with Boston and Pittsburgh, with the caveat that Ramirez's two option years would go away and he would agree not to stick the Marlins by filing for salary arbitration. That way, as part of the deal, the Marlins would have received two draft picks next June as compensation for losing Ramirez via free agency. But before that deal could go to Manny for his approval (and sources say he would have vetoed it and only accepted a trade to the Dodgers at that point), the commissioner's office is said to have nixed it, telling the Marlins they had to get a player back, not two draft choices.

If the bolded part is true then none of this matters anyway. Although there were reports saying Manny would have waived his no trade to go to FL, so who really knows.

Boik, "doing something right" does not mean "does something to hurt the team competing with you for the division title." :pity:

Can't wait for Selig to retire. It'll be like Tagliabue leaving the job; no, better.

Dodgers have Joe Torre and a relatively weak division this year. You have enough help.

I'm bitter that we could have made the playoffs and are now stuck with Jeremy K. Hermida... who will wind up leaving us in arbitration anyway.

Thanks for going to the trouble of bringing baseball to South Florida, then undermining it, Commissioner. Oh, and no thanks for your screwing around with the stadium deal, too.

Someone send this guy a crate of Viagra and the last five years' worth of Playboy back issues, please? That way we'll never hear from him again.

I think a lot of Goodell's time and energy has been spent cleaning up messes that originated under Tags (or that Tags did nothing about), particularly player conduct, rookie pay scales, and figuring out how to truly expand the league.

Goodell's a marketing guy. His instinct is to sweep anything under the rug that could harm the overall integrity of the league. I'm not saying Goodell is Best Commish Ever, but damn, the guy's spent virtually his entire term to date cleaning up the messes Tags left behind.

He cant leave you in arbitration. All an arbitrator would do is determine whether his asking salary or the teams recommended salary is more in line with what he should get paid that year.

But eventually Hermida will leave like everyone else unless the team opens the wallet when the new stadium comes.

I'm glad someone else sees this as well. His treatment of South Fla has bordered on incompetence.

Taking away the All-Star Game, insisting on Loria as the owner, even though he knew this guy would be the poorest owner in baseball, and that Loria had ruined baseball in Montreal so badly, the franchise had to move.

But remember Selig is an Arizona guy......his team Milwaukee has always trained in AZ, and he has a huge home in AZ. He also had MLB loan the AZ team money to help build their stadium, but never has offered anything like that to the Marlins organization.

    Sad

South Florida should be a baseball power right now. Nothing on the Bahstahn/Noo Yawk level, but certainly we should be equivalent with Atlanta in terms of fanbase. Amazing what mismanagement will do, huh?

I remember Selig coming down a few months back for talks about the stadium and ruling out MLB contributing some money to the project. Why? It does MLB no good if the Marlins' lease runs out without a new home.

Whatever, I guess steroid money is reserved for his pockets and not bettering the sport.

He claims he won't help down here because MLB got burned in the Arizona deal 10 years ago. They lent Colangelo (Diamondbacks original owner) about $ 60 million for the stadium, and instead he pocketed the money, and then sold the team. That left the franchise in deep financial doo-doo.

So he's worried about the owner he approved for the Marlins stealing his money? Why'd he approve Loria in the first place, then? Idiot.

You forgot to mention the money he borrowed to the D-backs up front to build the World Series winners. Yep that's a knock on my own team btw.

    Bud Selig amplifies BS IMO.

Back to the topic De Jour.

Why should it be a surprise that Manny had the road paved for him to leave Boston and go the the Yankees-West?

Think about the Money this is going to generate for MLB

But thats the entire problem Matt.

What he should get paid in Florida or what he should get paid to go to the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox or Yankees? There is a HUGE difference there bro. We are talking an extra zero at the end difference :wink2:

Its been very unfair how both Florida teams have been treated as opposed to Arizona and Colorado. They have been coddled and prodded and the Florida teams left to their own devices, yet the Marlins have two rings and Tampa looks like they could win one if not this year, maybe next year.

That I am sure makes Bug Selig sick to his stomach.

See this is the problem that is percieved about what is going on down here. There is no lack of money that the team doesn't have a decent payroll, its all about the greed of the ownership. The Marlins make $ 32 million a year just from the MLB TV contracts with FOX & ESPN, then make about $ 40 million from "revenue sharing". That is $ 72 million before a ticket is ever sold. The payroll is about $ 21 million and operating expenses probably about another $ 15 million. Add all that up and you'll see why Forbes magazine called the Marlins the most profitable franchise in MLB, even ahead of the Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers & Red Sox.

The owner Jeff Loria is pocketing tens of millions every year, and isn't really that serious about winning. See what happened this year.....close but no big trades to help the team out when they needed it.

It sucks because Loria could have gone to Washington with the Nationals, but instead Selig sent him here.

I HATE BUD SELIG ! :tantrum:

Whats the difference? Its not like the Marlins would shell out to sign him anyway....thats the real problem here as others have already referenced. The Marlins had no intention of resigning him. they wanted him on loan and then the 2 first round picks and thats not in the fair spirit of competition.

You cant trade draft picks and thats essentially how this was viewed. End of story.

Further, that argument doesnt fly from a Marlins fan. your franchise purchased a WS title all the same when you went and spent megabucks on Alou and Sheff. Its no ones fault your owner is a greedy selfless putz who is in baseball to make money first and win 2nd.

This brings me to the single biggest problem, and it HAS been re-hashed over and over and over.

Some teams can afford to have a payroll larger than the bottom ten teams combined. I dont care how you slice it, that IS an un-fair advantage.

Has it paid off in recent history, not in Pennants won. It is a viscous cycle though. The teams that live in large markets and can bring in Star-power which in turns keeps bringing in the fans (Optomism) while the rest of the league rubs pennies together to bring in one or two stars and hopes it will fill the seats better than the year before.

That argument flies because you are stating that stocking up on draft picks is unfair, well so is buying a World Series. The Marlins have won the World Series with both techniques.

You act as if this was the first incident in MLB history of a team acquiring a guy whose contract is up at the end of the year for the sole purpose of making a playoff push.

Either Loria is interested in stealing money at the expense of the product, ala Red McCombs, or he's building a team and made a push to acquire a big-name player who would almost certainly put us ahead of divisional rivals in this year's playoff push. Pick one.

And it's worth noting Boston had no problem with the monetary caveats of this trade. They were clearly willing to pay the rest of his salary and provide the $2 million to cover the signing bonuses of the two draft picks--because, y'know, they agreed to it.
