If he wants to get paid like Julio Jones (rumored) than man that's gonna be tough on a couple levels.) imo he isn't thinking about the team and how that may prohibit us from signing others that may be important to becoming a championship team..I do think in today's game elite players have to think about taking team friendly deals, and understand the logistics of where they truly want to be, understand what they want their legacy to look like, to think about life after football, etc, and negotiate accordingly..

Giving him 15 mill a year can strap a team and make it difficult..

I'd give him 5 years 60 mill and remind him of his dolphin legacy, maybe get creative with the up front money and contract, and remind him that Steven Ross is the owner here and cares about him, his legacy, and life after football..

    Tom Brady takes less.

Tom Brady is in a completely different spot that Landry. His wife makes a ton of money. He has made a ton of money. He can make as much money as he wants via endorsements. Tom Brady could play for essentially as long as he wants. Tom Brady could assuredly get a primo announcing gig immediately post retirement.

Landry has never made a lot of money. Landry is essentially living off of his own income to the best of my knowledge. The lifespan of a WR is short. Landry does not have the endorsement value of Brady and likely never will. Landry does not have the post football guarantees that Brady has.

Landry should do his best to maximize his value from this next contract. If I was his agent, I would tell him that the vast majority of his entire life's earnings will come from the guaranteed money of his next contract. I would tell him to expect nothing more.

I sincerely hope that the Dolphins will do the right thing by Landry. If Landry chooses to leave in order to make more money elsewhere, I would begrudge Miami for not signing him this offseason - not Landry.

“We hold ourselves to a different standard being the ‘New Miami,’ ” Gray said. “He let it be known out of the gate, at halftime, that the first half was over and done with. No more of that soft (expletive). It’s time to go.”

THE NEW MIAMI. I love it.

And what a bunch of horse pucky. The team will cut Landry in a second he needs to get his while he can. He's one blown out knee from being unemployed.

This is where I'm at..but I'm not sure it's just hope..we keep hearing how he wants top 5 money, we know he has a very strong belief in himself, He just may think he should get paid like Julio..

At this point he's very difficult to put a price tag on..

I'm still waiting for someone to show me where Jarvis Landry has said he expects to be paid like a top five receiver. I've heard him say he thinks he's the best, and wants to be respected. But I've never heard a single contract demand from HIM. I've also heard he turned down a contract offer from the Phins. That may be but it doesn't mean he won't accept anything less than Julio money. Structure of the deal has to be right also.

What I do know is the man is a FOOTBALL play-uh! He is criminally misused in this offense. Throw him 6 slants a game instead of those stoooopid flipping screens and see what happens. And let him return punts too. Just pay the man.

According to Sport Trac, we are two million over the projected cap for 2018. Immediately cutting Byron Maxwell, Julius Thomas, and Lawrence Timmons saves us 22 million. So that gets us 20 under. Suh counts 26 million against the cap, and cutting him won't help. So, unless they extend him a year and spread some of that total, its what it is. But, it is possible there could be 4-5 million there in savings.

I am leaving Tannehill's 20 mil cap hit in place because if Cutler has a great year and we cut Tannehill, Cutler won't be playing for 10 million next year. He'll be getting RTs money.

There are some other interesting choices...we could save by cutting the following players: (22.5 mil)
    Pouncey 7 million
    Wake 5 million
    James 9 million
    S. Anthony, 1.5 million

So, cutting the original three and losing three starters, plus S. Anthony, we'd be 42 million under the cap.

We'd have to draft a C and a T, which we should probably do anyway.

If I were King for a day, I'd cut Max, JT, and Timmons. I'd cut Wake, Pouncey, and SA. I'd restructure James making his cap hit closer to 3 million for next year.

I'd draft DE and a C early. Use the 40 mil to extend Jarvis, (which would still leave about 30 million to spend on FA, which might include keeping MP, Wake, and any others). I just think with Wake's age and Pouncey's injury history, I wouldn't want to get boxed in on any expensive contracts.

Post June 1 2018 it looks like Suh can be cut for a $17 M savings and similarly post June 1 2019. but in both of those scenarios you are still losing $9 M in cap space to him so it is pretty unlikely he would be cut unless does something ridiculous. The following year is where it starts to get more interesting, when he would be about 33 or 34 and would save you similar money (18 millionish) and you only have about 4 Million in dead cap if he is cut.
One interesting thing is the difference in cutting him in 2018 pre June or post June. If you cut him pre June 1, you would only save 3.9 M, which would never happen because waiting until post June 1 you save $17 M...but you'd still have that enormous 9 M in dead cap so it's still a no no. So it looks like you're looking at waiting until 2020 unless he plays like absolute crap of gets into some kind of legal trouble or seriously tries to get himself cut by causing so much **** that the Dolphins just decide to eat it.

I'm not a cap expert, so correct me if I missed or misinterpreted something.

So you would cut Tannehill for one more year of Cutler and then have to start all over again with a rookie QB? The only way I would even consider that is Cutler has a Season like Brees did when the Saints walked all over the league. Anything less and it’s Tannehill (that’s Tannehill with another year of study under his belt).

If Cutler plays well enough to keep him longer term AND he's willing to stay at least one more year, I don't see why he'd be unwilling to stay many more years. I either see Cutler as a 1-year experiment or a longer term solution. I think the least likely possibility is him staying exactly 2 years because either we go back to Tannehill or we keep Cutler longer term.

Also, he doesn't have to be the top ranked QB by passer rating in order to keep him (Brees in 2009 was #1 in passer rating when he won the SB). He just needs to be in that top 6-7 category where you'd want your franchise QB on average to be, and a good threshold to use in the last few years is 100 PR because that generally gets you into top 6-7.

So I'd say if Cutler can manage a 100+ PR over an entire season, then it's worth seeing if he'd be willing to accept a long term deal and move on from Tannehill.

Take it easy criminal mind! I am just doing the accounting for the salary cap! The point is one of the quarterbacks, whoever the front office chooses, is going to count 20 million dollars.

What do you think Cutler would cost compared to the Tannehill deal (assuming Jay had over 100 QBR this season).

IDK about $ cost, but I think Jay Cutler compares best to Phillip Rivers if I had to pick one current starting NFL QB to compare Cutler to.

Oh.. well whatever he'd cost it will be quite a bit more than what QB's got when Tannehill signed his contract. QB salary inflation is absurd and for prediction purposes what you should go by is how much the QB's who just signed a contract got.

Best comparison might be Kirk Cousins. 2015 and 2016 he produced (combined) close to 100 PR, was 5th and 7th in PR ranking in those years, and just signed a contract for around $24 mil. The $25+ mil barrier (average per year) has already been broken with Derek Carr and Stafford signing this year.

Age is obviously different and that might make guaranteed money less for Cutler, but average salary I'd say the best guess is around $24-$25 mil per year if indeed Cutler is thought of as a top 6-7 QB for the next few years. That's a lot more than we're paying Tannehill, and assuming such an estimate is accurate it's something that should also enter the calculus.

Rivers is a bit above Tannehill at $20.8 mil average per year, but keep in mind he signed that contract 2 years ago:

Got to go by most recent signings.. like I said the inflation is absurd.

Is there a scenario in which we make the playoffs, win a playoff game, Cutler goes over 100 QBR for the year.... and we manage to pay Cutler AND Landry, without any other significant losses?

Because I'm starting to think if Cutler stays, Landry goes. Just in terms of salary cap spending.

Got to ask someone else for that (don't know the in's and out's of "capology"). I will say this though.. they are bound to increase the salary cap next year too. I mean the salary cap went up $12 million from 2016 to 2017 (just 1 year!!), from $155 mil to $167 mil. So I'm optimistic we'll be able to keep our key players. But maybe a capology expert can give you a better answer.. there's bound to be one online on a Saturday?? lol

I don't know that that would necessarily be the case. He didn't want to play for anyone else and likely still wont, so you'd think that he would take less than what other QB's get if he decided to stay. If he doesn't play here he probably doesn't play anywhere. I think he will get and want more than 10mill but I doubt he would put money over keeping the guys he plays with this season. I also am not sure Miami would break the bank to keep him without a crazy year from Cutler, based off his age. If we make it to the super bowl or maybe even make it to the game before I don't know what they do, but if we make the playoffs and loose in the first, maybe even the second round, I think long term with Tanny you already have that and with a much younger guy who would give you that chance for a longer period of time.

Yes...well be losing Maxwell and Timmons and Julius Thomas...that alone is roughly 22 million. if we restructure James, that could be another 5 million. its possible.

It always cracks m up when people get caught up in the money. That s--t always has away of working itself out. The question should remain; is he worth it? ,,,and that's a big resounding....HELL YES? Homie deserves to get paid!! I don't care if he's the 1, 2, or 3 receiver or just a 'slot guy". He's been one of, if not the best player on the team for awhile now. I remember, at the end of the Dan Cambell season, I was so pissed and felt done with the whole team.....except for Landry. Hard to even argue this issue again. It's Jarvis, man. He balls out! Pay the man! He's earned it.

We can keep Cutler and Landry with big contracts, but we can't keep Tannehill and Cutler. Now, maybe Moore retires after this season and Gase talks Cutler into grooming RT for a season from the bench- that's the only way I can remotely see both of them on our roster in 2018.
I do think some folks here are wrong though and Cutler won't push for 25M+/year on a longer deal- we all know that his situation is unique and he's not going to demand the cash of a 27 year old in his prime. Not that Cutler couldn't be great for 2-3 more seasons....I just don't think he gets that benefit of the doubt unless he collects a SB ring this year. But if that happens, then I'm pretty sure he would go out on top and be done with football- so I don't see the massive salary in any scenario.
