My thoughts exactly. Essentially we got something out of nothing too.

Jones, unfortunately, will be here next year as he signed a two year contract for 18 million a season. No one will even talk to us about trading for him.

I think Manny is a rental personally. Frank McCourt alluded to it during his press conference. He basically said that L.A. is focusingon winning THIS YEAR and Manny will have to sort out what he wants to do in the offseason.

That tells me that he most likely will not be back unless he comes back on the cheap, meaning L.A. doesn't pick up the option.

I would like to see the outfield consists of Ethier and Kemp playing full time next year. Whoever the third outfielder is will depend on what Manny does.

Ugh, would've rather had Manny than Jones. I think sometime next season someone will be looking for a quick expiring contract.

Expiring contracts don't work the same way in baseball as they do in basketball. There is no cap so there is no benefit to taking on a guy who with one as large as Andruw's. The only advantage would be to get picks when he leaves in free agency, but that means you have to offer him arbitration, which probably won't happen.

The only way we trade him is if we pick up the tab. I doubt there is anyway McCourt shells out 17 million to trade Andruw. We are stuck with him through 2009.

Bottom line....Dodgers gave up 2 players they didnt want, for a temporary rental of Manny that could produce playoff dividends this season (paid mostly by Red Sox) and get 2 draft picks via FA Type A contract.

Wow, talk about Win, Win, Win!!!

Mike Hampton was simultaneously getting paid by Colorado, Florida, and Atlanta.

Quick note on Andruw, a girl I know dates a pitcher who is in Double A for Los Angeles (Miguel something from Venuzuela), anyway he is good friends with Juan Pierre. Apparently, Adruw is going out every night getting plastered and playing in games hung over. He went on to say Andruw became so depressed that the Braves didnt offer him a contract that he slacked in his offseason workouts and doesnt seem to care about his performance.

Take it for what its worth.

Somehow I find this all very realistic. He was lazy the last few years with the Braves.

Honestly, I think it's actually worth shipping him out and eating his salary than just letting him rot on the roster and take up a valuable spot. I've actually heard he's a locker-room cancer too. He looks plastered every time he plays.

Lakers were wheeling and dealing? Must be secret then because all they did was add two 6'5 SG/PG's.

Manny Ramirez has been on fire.

The six running killed my Phils last night. Charlie Manuel just hung Kendrick out to dry. I just knew Manny was going to get a big hit. :pity: Ohhh well....looks like the Dodgers are in a close battle with the D-Backs, just like the Phils with the Mets/Marlins.

Good look tonight. I listened to Vin Scully calling last night's game and he is still the best in the business....he just kept talking about Manny's hair.

Yea, Scully's a real living legend. Douchebacks got Adam Dunn who'll fit in nicely with their low team BA. I'll still take Manny over him any day. I do like the Phil's Chase Utley and not just because he's a Bruin alum.

  17. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

Utley was originally drafted by the Dodgers too...Man it would be nice to have him here...

As for Manny, the guy has played 10 games and has been rippiing the cover off of the ball. Had our "closers" not blown two saves in a row in San Fran, we would be in first place all alone and 7-3 since the arrival of Manny...but alas.

Extra bonus, since Manny has arrived, Casey Blake has gotten even BETTER with the stick. I think it is only a matter of time until the Dodgers eventually ursurp the D-Backs for good on top of the division. There is still a lot of baseball to be played.

And if my Aunt had a set of stones she would be my Uncle :tongue2:

Sam, you have been playing this EXACT same song and dance since the end of April.

We have had 3 Signifigant starters gone for the season, and our pitching alone will keep us on top.

I know, that made me sad when I saw that. A local guy, born and raised in Pasadena, attended UCLA and Long Beach Poly, was a fan of the Dodgers growing up. Truly a shame.

Broxton's got the stuff and I think he'll be a great closer in the future. But yea, our bullpen's been shaky recently after a pretty good year overall. If our bullpen gets back into form and Penny/Schmidt return to their form, we should take the division.

Blake's definitely been stellar and I hope we re-sign him. People talk about Manny but Blake's been unsung.

  20. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

Actually...I haven't. Our pitching has been stellar all season long. Which is why I made reference to the blown saves over the weekend. Considering that the Dodgers have outplayed and been flat out BETTER than the D-backs since the end of April(look up the records since May first), I am confident that it is only a mtter of time until they are in L.A.'s rear view mirror.

And we have had our share of injuries as well. Brad Penny missed two months, our closer Saito has been out the second half of the season and our starting shortstop Rafael Furcal has been gone almost all season as well and Jason Schmidt hasn't pitched at all. Not to mention Nomar Garciaparra and his myriad of injuries. I don't think you want to go down that route. The injury bug ha **** us just as hard, if not harder...yet we continue to be right there.

It doesn't matter much in the long run though. Neither team will do much of anything come playoff time. They simply are not good enough to compete with the Cubs/Mets/Phillies.

Of course, if we COMBINED teams...then we might be onto something... :knucks:

Losing a starting SS (who was on a roll before being gone), starting 3B, starting closer, and two starting pitchers hurts. But I guess I'm used to it. Not good enough to face the Cubs sure, but provided people stay healthy, we can match up well with the Mets and Phillies.

I might have to eat my words about the Phillies. We have taken 3 games in a row to move into a first place tie with Arizona. A sweep tomorrow would be sweet.

Oh and Manny now has 5 homeruns and 16 rbi since becoming a Dodger at the start of August. Unreal.

I know I've doubted Colletti's trading ability but he's hit HR's with Manny and Blake. If Brad Penny returns to form, we've got a good team.

Oh yea, that reminds me, someone wore a Dodger game to the Angels-Yanks game I went to. He got a lot of "Aren't you in the wrong stadium" heckles and he responded "Oh yea, World Series is that way *pointing north*". No comment from the crowd who subsequently went back to sparring with the Yanks fans (quite a lot of them too).

lol. There always seems to be a few Dodger fans wearing their crap blue proudly at Angel games. If I ever go back to Dodger stadium I wouldnt wear my Angel gear, it just doesnt make sense to me lol.

Yanks and Sox fans come out in force when they play at the Big A, I assume everywhere else too. Makes for a good game though because the crowd is in it.

Yea, I made sure to wear a Guerrero shirt instead of my new Manny one. And I know there are Angels fans who wear their gear to Dodger Stadium. But I don't think it's that big a rivalry compared to say NY-Bos or Yanks-Mets. Still, it'd be cool to have a Freeway series because then for once, I'd have a favorite team winning it.

Loved the back and forth in that game. Yanks cheer first, then Angels. But at the end of the game, we all agreed and toasted to the mutual agreement that we hate Boston and hope they choke on dirt.

Def not as big as those other rivalries you mentioned. A freeway series would be cool, it'd give me a chance to do a lot of trash talking to my Dodger friends lol.

The back and forth is great, it's why I love when Boston/NYY come to town. When Boston came to town last time there was a Yankee fan walking through the crowd who got booed by everyone. Some guy with his kid had the balls to wear a Arod jersey to an Angels/Sox game lol. Not to mention Sox fans are quite creative with their anti-Yankee/Arod t-shirts, and they seem to wear them everywhere. My favorite was probably a shirt one Sox fan was wearing that showed a scoreboard with Arod's name on it, and the count was 0 balls 3 strikes and the shirt pointed out that Arod had no balls...

Lol, I still gotta find that shirt an Angels fan was wearing. I guess his friend was wearing a shirt with a picture of A-rod swinging and this guy sat next to him and wore one with Madonna in that whole leather getup holding A-rod on a leash with a whip.

Penny is clearly done at this point. At least this season. His fastball was way slower against San Fran and he was shelled against Philly. I would like to see James McDonald come up and join Kershaw and Billingsley in the rotation, but I have a feeling they will wait on him until at least September call ups.

Good luck to Penny as he will probably not pitch again for the Dodgers.

Personally, I thought the Dodgers dropped the ball by letting him walk after the 2006 season. I welcome him back to the Dodgers with open arms. The amount of teaching he can still give Billingsley (who is really coming into his own) and Clayton Kershaw (20 year old rookie with NASTY stuff) cannot be quantified. Plus he has big game experience and brings a nice ying to Manny's Yang in the clubhouse (despite the famous soap on a rope lather rookie hazefest back in the Atlanta days...).

Great move for L.A. and one that I think may put them in the clear driver's seat out west.

I like the move. Penny's gone for the season and you need a vet to stabilize the inexperienced rotation along with Lowe. He did pretty well here and should be a serviceable #4 starter. Maybe with a little run support and a pitcher's park, he might look better. Still despite a good 2006 campaign with us, he hasn't been good in Dodger Stadium the past two years.

  40. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

His ERA is servicable enough, and Petco is the ULTIMATE pitcher's park. In fact, his splits at home look much better than on the road, which is a bit of a concern. He will have a better offense in L.A. and the heat of a penant race tends to bring out the best in Maddux. We witnessed that in 2006 when he was acquired and took us into the postseason.
