I'm wondering if its ok to point out that Brady played poorly when he was pressured all game.

I'm also wondering if I'm allowed to point out how having a better line probably changes the outcome.

I mean an oline sure seemed important tonight and it was because Brady looks human with serious pressure.

I doubt it. I'm sure the Brigade will come out in droves to blast me for those observations.

 

Brady is now 2-4 in the playoffs when he gets sacked 4 times, I believe.

 

Not sure that had much to do with his ability to improv, more than his freedom to audible (more than before) it was him playing the position less timid and with fear.

Either way, im all for see some more of that.

As long as you can acknowledge that Denvers OL struggled also yet Manning still had a pretty efficient game all things considered.

Works both ways. One guy handled the pressure better than the other guy today.

The real reason NE lost is because Wade Phillips is one of the beat DC's this league has seen in the last 20 years....he defended the intermediate routes and Rb as well as anyone has in a long time. Every play NE made they had to actually MAKE. That defense gave them nothing in regards to coverages and time to throw.

Phillips is a beast.

Yeah in the 90's and one of the grteatest of all time and they didn't struggle as bad as NE's.

 

Manning was pressured but he had a LOT of opportunity to do more than he did. He had at least double to triple the opportunities at open receivers that Brady had. I actually thought Manning played like crap all things considered.

 

In the 90's? If you cant tip your cap to what Wade did to that offense today then im not sure you understand the game of football.

And yes NE's line did struggle more, but they also had 52 passes attempted to Denvers 31. So Manning was actually sacked at a much higher rate per dropback. Yet he still played a good football game and along with Brady made throws we havent seen a Qb in Miami make since the late 90's.

So again...both Qbs were "victims" of bad OL play. One just handled it better.

I wouldnt say he played like crap, he did about all he is capable of at this point in his career. And Demaryus Thomas didnt do him any favors this game either, that guy needs to step his game up or Carolina is better off putting Josh Norman on Emmanual Sanders in two weeks.

And yes, when the QB, even a great one like Brady is pressured ridiculously and asked to pass a lot, it doesn't look good.....how does that not correlate to how Thill passes a lot and is pressured ridiculously?

And its no secret its harder to play QB when pressured, but the bigger issue NE had was Bums son taking away their short game and allowing the pressure to even get there.

Palmer was horrendous tonight. 4 picks and all of them on telegraphed/forced passes. That Panther D is something else though.

 

That is how he played all season, minus the TD's and add some interceptions. Osweiler should be starting, and if they keep that defense in tact they will be scary next year with him at the helm IMO

 

Sure. But I would point out that Brady was still able to win 13 games with a bad o-line while losing his best weapons for a lot of the season.

 

That's because, as you said, "hot garbage", why wouldn't people complain if Tanne played like "hot garbage"?

You do bring up a point though, Manning's "clutch" ability in the playoffs, it's suspect, it always has been, every player reacts differently to pressure situations, not pass rush, but clutch, and Peyton is clutch in the regular season, but playoffs is where he hits his rub, and Tanne seems to hit his rub in nearly any "must win" pressure situation.

This clutch "gene" is my biggest worry with Tanne, Peyton has been worth it for Indy, but in many ways he hasn't been worth it, he's packed the house, he gets you TO the playoffs, but his career is a bit of a disappointment in the playoffs, he's NOT won or made the SB with some really good teams, the year he won, he was half carried by the D and he's exited the playoffs too many times with really bad performances.

If I'm playing in a SB, and I have a choice of Peyton or Eli, i'd take Eli, who is a flawed QB, but he's clutch, my same reasoning goes with Tanne, if he was clutch I'd take him with his flaws.

 

Totally agree about the "clutch" issue with Peyton vs. Eli in the playoffs. But... today Peyton was clutch, especially given his decline this year. Maybe (and I'm really really hoping so) he can be clutch just one last time and win that SB. At least he did it against the Patriots today (sooo happy haha!).

 

Dude, what is your problem? You have gotten so caught up in the Tannehill talks that you are programmed to automatically troll into a thread everytime a Qb has a bad game. Its childish and frankly stupid. Palmer had a bad game....does this discount what he did all season?

His passing has been bad since he hurt his finger vs Philly. Many high and many off-target.

I believe it would have been a good game if Peterson doesn't flub that punt... then get burned on like 3 straight plays.

I wanted a good game, but was wanting the Panthers to win. Arizona brought their D-game instead of their A-one.

 

I can't say Payton was clutch today. He missed several open guys. At the end of the game in the 4th quarter they could not pick up a 1st down to run the clock out. I would say he survived

 

He didn't really do anything special... except run that one time. Heehee.

I heard this morning that the Pats had like 19 guys on IR this year. Wow.

 

He has played really bad this year, so the key part of what I said was "given his decline this year". You're right that wasn't a great QB performance, but given how he played this year what he did yesterday was fantastic and occurred right when it mattered.

That OL from an ability standpoint us much worse than Miami's.

The difference being they had an OC who could mask that with great playcalls/spacing. And a QB who could get rid of the ball fast because he anticipates as well as any ive ever seen.

I think it's appropriate to point out that in years past, Tannehill had been among the fastest in the league at getting rid of the ball, still ending with high sack totals. Don't know where he ranked this year, though, in terms of getting rid of the ball.

 

Few factors that help the Patriots with protecting Brady.

1. They don't commit a lot of penalties putting them in long situations.
2. When they are in 3rd and long they call low risk plays and are confident in their defense (they live to fight another day).
3. Short passing efficiency. Often times they know where they're going with the ball before the snap. You'll also notice they weren't nearly as efficient in this regard when Edelman and Lewis were out.
4. They have a considerably shorter distance to go on 3rd downs to pick up a 1st.
5. Brady's quick release.
6. Playing with a lead.

 

Maybe equally bad at years end... of course Miami's wasn't because of 42 injuries. Dophin starters vs Pat starters is not even a comparison.

 

NE's OL was the same that played against KC. Very unlikely that five guys performed markedly worse one week later. Much more likely that Brady just couldn't figure out where to go with the ball in time.

 

No, KCs DL is not as good as Denvers. But yeah... because there was much less time.

 

If they are, it is marginal. Both have elite defensive fronts. Tom Brady was getting rid of the ball right away against KC. He didn't need any time because he know where to throw it as soon as he took the snap.

 

I've been told that only QB ability matters, and defensive game plans don't matter.

I don't think Brady knew what coverages he was facing until after the play, and I don't think he knew where an open receiver would be, no.

By what measure? By almost every objective measure he's a top-5 QB.

He knew exactly where his receivers would be... but of course not whether they would be open or not. No QB 'knows'.

They were rushing 4 for the most part... but Miller might have counted for 1 and a half. A few coaching moves might have helped like chipping the DE/LB doing the rushing or leaving another player back to block. They didn't do that for some reason.
