I definately think our secondary has the ability to cover and make plays. If we can get some pressure on the QB, they can be at least solid, and perhaps even very good.
I still worry about this group the most on our team. followed by our receivers and QB's. Three very important areas, that really underperformed last year, mind you there were several injuries though. Until i see them performing well in games, im still very skeptical of this unit.
if they can stay healthy, we could be alright. under saban, this unit usually over-achieved. perhaps under the likes of Bowles, they can do the same. the two huge factors are simply, can Yeremiah stay healthy for even majority of the season, and can Jason Allen find his game?
If goodman is doing as well as we seem and legitimately beats out lehan at the end of training camp then the combination of andre, will and lehan will be a very strong unit. If healthy and able to compete i thought lehan was gonna start, if goodman beats him out our top three becomes that much stronger
I'd say way more then several injuries. Also we had 0 pressure on the QB most of the time so it makes the secondary look a lot worse. If the front 7 get it together and the injury plague doesn't hit us again then I think they'll do fine.
I hope next offseason we bring some youth to the secondary. Other than J. Allen all our other starters are getting up in age.
Our passing defense was actually very good last year, 4th overall. It may have resulted from the run defense being so poor but the pass defense was good. If we can stop the run, which I think Jason Ferguson and others can do for us, we could have a very good defense
I worry more about our ability to stop the run and get pressure on the QB, if we can't do those 2 things our secondary is going to have a rough year.
I'm not worried about Will Allen and Andre Goodman, I'm worried about our nickel and dime CB's and Y. Bell staying healthy. Is anyone really comfortable with Travis Daniels as our Dime Db? We have paper thin depth in the secondary again... When I read that coverages had been simplified, my confidence in Jason Allen grew, he is a top flight athlete and this year under Todd Bowles he should justify himself to all of us.
Well, Lehan was a starter last year so I don't worry about him that much. Nathan Jones has been impressive in camp, having two interceptions on two straight days. I'm not a fan of him lol. I said the exact same thing in another thread. I think Allen could be a very good player in the simplistic coverage.
The funny thing is, I didn't really care for Michael Lehan last season, it seemed like he was burned to often. Lehan does have a history with Bowles though, so we shall see how he plays when he is healthy.
Lately, if Will Allen snatches 2 interceptions in a season, repent. Because the world is going to end. And if Allen is getting 2 ints, Goodman better get 8 or be ashamed of himself. If we want to get back into the playoffs, we need someone that Will Allen can complement, not the other way around. If we're looking at someone to complement Allen as a #2, then we're satisfied with being average.
