REPORT: PACKERS, JETS IN “SERIOUS TALKS”
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 31, 2008, 8:53 p.m. EDT

The Green Bay Press-Gazette is reporting that the New York Jets are in serious talks with the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre’s agent about a trade that would send Favre to the Big Apple.

In fact, there’s actually a headline right now on the Press-Gazette web site reading, “All But Over: Favre to Go to Jets (It’s Over: Favre traded to Jets)” although there’s no story under that headline, and it has the appearance of something that was mistakenly put up by an overzealous web producer. (UPDATE: That headline has now been removed.)

However, there’s no mistaking that the Press-Gazette is reporting that the Jets “have shown a growing interest” in Favre, and they now appear to be the favorites to land him.

Favre was reportedly planning to fly from Mississippi to Green Bay this evening, but he has apparently now canceled those plans.

It would be a great move by the Jets if it happens.

    Pennington ends up a Viking

He wont play for them. Sure he'll get traded but he wont show.

I'm thinking if the Jets hold his rights they could trade him to a certain team :shifty:

Meanwhile, the Green Bay Press-Gazette is reporting Thursday that the Packers are also talking seriously about a trade that could send Favre to the New York Jets.

The newspaper, citing a source close to the situation, says that Favre's agent, Bus Cook, has been in talks with the Jets. Cook's involvement in the discussions suggests that the veteran quarterback, who must approve any trade, is at least considering the idea.

I don't by it. He would be better off not even playing football. He would get no where with the Jets. I just don't understand the logic in that. Perhaps its more about playing football than winning?

Believe that if you'd like but thanks to Free Agency, the Draft and everyone being healthy again, Favre could bring the Jets into the ranks of the Pats, Jags, Colts, & Chargers in AFC contention. You'll just have to sit back and wait and see. I know I'll be blasted here for it, but, like I just said last sentence, wait and see.

I don't know about that. They don't have an elite Back, they have DECENT WR corps but Favre would make it look good. Their O-line could protect him so he upgrades their offense. The problem would be if all that money spent on the defense pays off. If everything goes according to plan they could win 11 games.

I think Favre COULD make the Jets a contender. Will he? Unknown. I wouldnt be shocked to see a decline from last year. I wouldnt be shocked to see him at the same level.

Either way, its a good move for the Jets assuming he isnt to expensive. Pennington is taking them nowhere, and the Jury is still out but leaning negative toward Klemmons. This at least gives them time to find a young QB to bring in after he retires.

Still though, I dont think Favre is a SB calibre QB anymore. I watched his whole career being a Packers fan as well as Miami fan, and the guy just has what I call "off games" where he just implodes, often with the whole team following. Dallas before he got hurt was one, Giants was another. He effects the whole team both positively and negatively with his play, kinda crazy. Basically, he will take your team up a level, but he will kill you before the ultimate prize imo. Still better by a league than anyone you have now though ;)

Thomas Jones has ran for 1,000 yards in each of his past three seasons, Leon Washington is one of the best scatbacks/2nd string backs in this league and Jesse Chatman, as you well know, is no scrub either. Jerricho Cotchery & Laveranues Coles is a very good tandem and if given a QB with arm strength Coles could help stretch the field, he has the speed to do so.

Cotchery is one of the games up and coming receivers.

Well you can count the Jets out. It seems like it was wishful thinking. The latest news is he sent a Text message to Ed Werner stating he will like to play in the NFC North against the GB Packers since he can't play for them. Sorry

I'm going to agree that the Jets are contenders WITH Favre. Cotchery could be Favre's Jennings, and Coles can be his Driver. They just selected the top TE in the draft, Favre will love that. Their OL is a year ahead of where we want to be. The only ? is the defense. They have a pretty good secondary, but how is that front 7 gonna do? I've read that Gholston is struggling with the transition. We'll see though.
But there's definitely no doubt that Favre will make this team a contender. In the end, it will hurt the Jets. But in the present, at least their fans will get to watch them win. Something they haven't seen much of. I know I'd like to know that the Dolphins were gonna be contenders this year, but they won't. I'll really charish the wins this year. Each one will mean the world to me.

I hope the Jets get Favre.

As a Dolphin fan, I pray to the football Gods, please please football Gods, have the Jets give up draft picks for Brett Farve. Please have Brett come in and play for the Jets. Please have Brett behind Mangold come Sep. 9th. amen.

I still don'tget how Favre is supposed to come right in and be amazing for the Jets. This isn't Madden Football.

He would have to come in and learn the system within a month. Get used to the WR's, get the timing down, shake off the rust...all in a short period of time. Plus he would have miles of expectations on him to get a team that was 4-12 a year ago, spent like madmen in FA to compete with the Giants, to the playoffs.

Ya, is he a better player than Clemens and Pennington sure, but I don't know if it's the best situation.
