There's still a rather large issue with how much of an ******* he is, but he may be right.

 

don't really care anymore. we have a good young QB, strong Dline, good weapons on offense, who is to say that Saban would have been able to build a good team at all even with D Brees at QB.

He left Miami because he realized he didn't like dealing with grown men and because his wife told him she couldn't stand living in South Florida.
If he actually wanted to be an NFL head coach, I am sure he could have gotten another job over the past nine years. He simply prefers being a big dog in the minor leagues, instead of a whipped pup in the big leagues.

 

So Culpepper over Brees was the right decision after all.

 

So basically Saban wasn't responsible for anything. His wife and medical people made all the decisions.

That lack of accountability is why he couldn't be a leader of men and had to go back to bullying college students.

C'mon...Get Real!! This is absolutely righteous. Didn't you know this before? The Dolphin curse began before this move, but choosing to pass on Brees was just an abomination.

If you were the coach/GM you would have been outraged as well. I have let go, but, .... nope, I just won't say it

 

If we had grabbed Brees, and Saban was still the coach, we'd probably be a SB contender every year, Saban is a real good coach, and he also knows how tough it is to get a franchise QB, so with a better offer from Alabama, he took that rather than flounder around the NFL for a decade looking for a franchise QB. It was a smart business move in many respects.

The future looked bright with Saban, I wish he had chosen to stay.

I will never forget that day. My buddy and I were glued to the website waiting to see when we would sign Brees.

I have always believed this to be true. I know we all hate the guy because of how he left, but he is still a good coach, and this was always the rumor that it was the doctors that said no to Brees.

 

Um.. how about his inability to identify QB talent in the draft??

We had the 2nd pick in the 2005 draft and took Ronnie Brown. Yeah, we needed a RB, but Aaron Rodgers was in that draft too.

Anyway, it's sad how all that panned out, because as a coach Saban is fantastic. I have no doubt we would have won SB's by now with even a decent QB under him.

 

Good X and O guy, effective when coaching boys, but he did not know how to coach men. There is a huge difference between coaching college aged kids and grown professionals. Between having a media that fawns over and protects you vs. goes after and can be antagonistic toward you. He was/is in my mind not cut out to be a coach at this level.

And the two-faced manner in which he left ... well that speaks to his character.

 

Absolutely. Obviously he can coach at a very high level but when the competition has the same talent level he can't win Championships. His teams are stacked at Alabama.

 

The med staff "advised" against him (it was actually a mixed opinion as the guy who actually did the surgery was also asked and he said Brees would be fine), but the decision was Saban's. Saban acting like he was powerless is a complete crock. Brees even talked about that once. Saban told him what the docs said and Brees asked Saban, "...But do you believe in me?" Saban didn't/wouldn't answer him. Brees asked Sean Payton the same question and got a positive answer. That was the difference. The decision was all on Saban and he made the wrong one.

 

The medical staff advised against drafting Jason Allen too, but Saban strongly overrode them. In fact, he told them that if another team picked Allen and he ended up playing at a high level, then their heads would be rolling around Davie.

It's been fairly documented Saban wanted Brees but the medical people would not sign off.

It was not just Miami's medical team. They called in several outside independent medical groups as well and they all gave the same answer. Dr. James Andrews, did give Brees the thumbs up and said he is a-okay. So they did miss on that. They completely whiffed.

But it was obvious Saban wanted Brees. Miami's medical team didn't sign off. When Saban spoke to Andrews, he said he might not be able to throw to start throwing by the exhibition, and only short passes to start the season. Andrews later changed his tune and said Brees is far ahead of schedule. But you have multiple doctors saying the same thing.

One of them is Dr. Russ Warren who is world renown himself. You do all of that because you really, really want Brees. But the Dr's never gave him the okay.

 

Nick Saban is one of the biggest frauds in the history of sports.

 

The medical staff didn't hold sway over Saban though. He could have overruled them and he made it sound like he couldn't.

 

You expect him to ignore the team's medical staff, and 3-4 independent medical groups? And if you actually read the article, and not just the title, he doesn't say what the headline says he said.

He didn't say he couldn't overrule the medical team. He just said, if they had Brees, he might still be here. He took info from 6 doctors, and they all gave him odds. And he chose wrongly in hindsight.

Saban offered him a contract. Brees admitted this. He was offered a potential contract but failed the team's physical. What is Saban to do, give a guy $10m/year who the team doctors said had a 25% chance of resuming his career, who failed the team's physical, sent the MRIs to 5 other independent doctors who all confirmed the same bleak odds?

Brees beat the odds. But the choice wasn't so easy before that.

 

The same thing happened with the Jason Allen. The medical staff wouldn't sign off, but Saban made the call. It's a flat out lie for him to act like he was powerless here or that he needed their permission. Jason Cole had several tweets confirming that. It was Saban's decision. He made the wrong call. He may have had good reasons, but it was still his decision. Acting like it wasn't is a lack of accountability on Saban's part. A real man would just say he played the odds and Brees beat them. A coward blames others.

 

Yes he could have, he'd done it before with Jason Allen.

Look I'm not saying he sucks because he made the wrong call it happens to everyone on every level in profession, I'm saying he sucks as a person because he has no sense of personal of responsibility.

I don't even blame him for lying about leaving, because the lying part was the best he could do for the Dolphins. But the deferring blame to everyone including his wife is ishhy...he should put down the Little Debbies for a sec, and be a man accept the responsibility for his decisions.

 

Exactly! I was strongly pushing for Brees at the time b/c I thought he would be a perfect extension of what Saban wanted on the field. (I liked DC as well, but I thought Brees was the perfect fit). But I understood the decision based on the medical reports. DC simply had better odds of making a full recovery than Brees. It was a judgment call. Saban just guessed wrong. That's fine. I have never criticized him for the call. What I do criticize him for is passing the buck and acting like he had no say.

I actually believe that if Saban had been a better offensive coach he could have been successful with DC. But like the vast majority of coaches, he just uses his system and finds or bends players to fit it. The coaches like Shula or a BB who can adapt are pretty rare. That's why I harp so much on fit. IMO Saban is a great college coach, but probably not a fit for an NFL coach. In the NFL he'd need the right situation to be successful. As a person he leaves a lot to be desired.
