The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but.” The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, though things appear closer now than ever before.

    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=967

    Whatever thats worth to you.

If it was for Willingham it would be a no brain move. I love the guy but he has serious back issues that aren't going to get any better as he gets older. Even for a rental player he would be worth trading.

Hermida is a sticky issue. He has so much potential but it seems like he hasnt made any progress at all this season (except in the field).

If either was I wouldnt cry.

Miller has loads of potential but the rotation is set for now, especially if Anibal comes back. Volstad and JJ have looked unhittable most of the games they have pitched so far. Olsen is having a great year, Nolasco has been great. So on.

Maybin from what I hear still hits a lot of ground balls that would be routine outs in the majors. He doesn't take great angles on defense either but he has enough speed to make up for that.

Honestly of the two I'd rather keep Miller. Hell I'd love to keep both, but if we lost one I wouldnt cry over it.

for a half year rental of manny? if it was me i would be disappointed if either of those were included because imo i dont think manny makes you guys world series contenders....but i haven't seen a lot of marlin games this year

Who says they don't resign him, even for just one year? With the stadium scheduled to open in 2011 they have to start showing a commitment now if they want it to have any long term impact.

Personally I'd rather it be for Willingham than Hermida. Considering there were rumors the Sox were interested in him before, he has back problems, and isnt going to get any better.

It's not like the NL is going to be that tough anyway. Moving Willingham for Manny would be a plus move for this year and worth the future. The defense wouldnt fall up and the offense would be a lot better.

For Hermida it would be a plus for this year but possibly not worth the future.

If you deal Miller and get Manny as a one year rental you can put Ross in left field (who would be a better fielder and just as good a hitter) as Willingham, and plug Maybin into center.

Assuming everyone stays healthy the rotation is set and has been great in the second half. As funny as it is our problem has been offense at times since the break.

    Wow....if this is true....just wow....

The Marlins will get Ramirez for Hermida, right-hander Ryan Tucker and two other prospects, with those four players being flipped to Pittsburgh for outfielder Jason Bay and left-hander John Grabow.

The Red Sox will send the Marlins enough cash to cover the remainder of Ramirez contract, as well as an unnamed prospect.

    from the palm beach post

"MIAMI GARDENS -- The Marlins have reached a tentative agreement to acquire Manny Ramirez from Boston as part of a three-team deal that will send Jeremy Hermida and three Florida prospects to Pittsburgh, an American League source said Wednesday night.
Officials with the Marlins and Red Sox did not confirm the deal but the source said a tentative agreement was reached about 10 p.m. Wednesday."

You know, I'm kind of ticked we're getting Ramirez for Hermida. I really like Hermida's potential... but then again, he hasn't really come on the way I had hoped. He's improved, but not at the rate he should have.

Hope that unnamed prospect is a pitcher.

I don't think we're going to ask for a catcher; we just drafted one, remember?

Maybe a CF, but then again that's what Maybin is for.

Honestly, I have no problem with Treanor holding down the fort until our draftee is ready to go. And I expect he'll be called up towards the end of next year, with a chance to start in 2010.

If this trade goes down, I hope so. We get 50,000 viewers a night, some of those guys need to head down to the stadium. It's 10 bucks a ticket for crying out loud.

Manny will be here for 2 months. This ownership is not going to pay Manny $ 20 million next year. Unless Boston is going to pay almost all of his contract I just don't see it happening.

But this could be one of the worst mistakes the Marlins have ever made, if they trade for Ramirez. :pity:

Looks like the Post jumped the gun. Or maybe there was a deal in place but something happened to cause a snag.

Given that we're in the thick of a division race here, I don't think I'll mind Manny Ramirez that much. His offense is an upgrade over Hermida's.

Well from what else is read we would get a lefty from the pirates and when Manny leave via free agency we would get draft pick compensation.

I want a deal to get done just not that deal. I was really hoping we would land pudge. Hope we get Arthur Rhodes and Laird for cheap

    Get ready for it.

Remember this ownership gave up Adrian Gonzalez in 2003 for the 2 month rental of Urgeth Urbina as our closer. Adrian Gonzalez is now an all star for San Diego, and their 1st baseman (who would you rather have now Jacobs or Gonzalez at 1st ?). I have always felt we could have won without Urbina (I can't remember him saving but 1 game in the playoffs) and would have had Gonzalez or some prospects he would have brought in right now.

This ownership has a history of doing this if they can get someone else to pay for it.

I just wonder what Manny would do to the chemistry in the clubhouse. Manny is Manny, and his antics have wrecked clubhouses before. I thought one of the things that has worked better this year was the level of maturity the young kids have this year, under the influence of Luis Gonzalez and Wes Helms. They show the young guys how to act and be mature players. Manny could wreck that whole thing, and then come November we are without Manny, without Hermida and probably another nice prospect, and most of all out of the playoffs.

    :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum:

If Ramirez could wreck the clubhouse between now and late September, then he should go down in the record books.

I don't like this trade either, but let's not overreact. In a race this close, a player like Ramirez gives us a strong chance at not only making the playoffs but winning the division for the first time in club history. Stuff like that is going to draw more interest in the team.

But there is so much potential in Hermida, and to give that up for a 2 month rental is a high price to pay. Hermida is very young (23) and still 1 year away from arbitration, which means he'll be cheap next year, and we can trade him then next year, before he costs us a lot of money. Maybe next year we can get an American League team to take him (you don't want him playing you every year) for some young prospects, and his value would be even greater. To be truthful I have been disappointed in Hermida's production, but as of late he has been doing a lot better.

Just saw the Griffy was traded to the White Sox. Things are heating up.

Well his clock didn't start ticking until late in 2005 when he was brought up and hit that grand slam in his 1st at bat. Players aren't eligible for arbitration until after their 4th full year. To me that would be make his 1st year of arbitration 2010.

Well he could do what was said in the Miami Herald this morning. Stay here for 2 months and then look to the Yankees to give him a big contract, and then stick it to the Red Sox all season long in 2009 & 2010, and then retire.

Anyone know where there is a showcase of the plan for the new Marlins stadium?

All you ever see are the articles on the fight over whether it will happen or not but I've never actually seen anywhere that showed what the stadium would look like or it's amenities.

They have a small picture on the Sun Sentinel right now but it's just a link to a court document.

Anyone know where I could see the proposed stadium plans?

There've been a couple of renderings over the years. I don't know what the final approved version is. Based on the fact that a bunch of houses immediately surround the rendering here, I'm thinking it's the final approved version.
