Right. Because you are predisposed to believe that Tannehill is not any more than an average at best QB, you see no point in looking at their similarities.
The funny thing is. That despite Tannehill improving every year, with a terrible oline and iffy receivers, if he shows significant growth this season, which I think is distinctly possible, the haters, who have previously given Tannehill all the blame, will then turn around and attribute his success to the team. A great season by Tannehill will not change anyone's mind. That's my prediction.
Do i really need to explain this? Do I really need to google other QBs and throw out comparisons? Its just silly to me, and it foes nothing but set the bar way too high for a young QB that still has alot to learn. They are different QBs with different mentality's....one is a gunslinger one is a cerebrial intermediate assasain. Unless something happens in Ryans life to permanently anger him (maybe catching his wife with Fin-O??) You wont see that FK You im firing this ball into that small window mentality. Doesnt mean Ryan cant be a top flight QB....just a bad comparison imo
What are people saying? How many people have called him any less than a borderline top 10 QB?? Who are these haters you speak of? Posters who want him to get better? Im confused.
This is a very well written post but I disagree with your premise. I think backing up Favre was a huge advantage in Rodgers's development.
Point? Early in his career, people had high expectations for Cutler. Then he seemed to hit his ceiling. Tannehill hasn't hit his yet, but if he does, and turns into Jay Cutler, then we can look for another QB. But, as long as he keeps improving, how about people stop acting like he's Mark freaking Sanchez.
If I tell my wife all the time how beautiful she is, but an constantly hitting on other women, does it mean anything that I tell her she's hot? Frankly, Fin, I don't recall you talking throughout the last two seasons about how you thought Tannehill was borderline to 10. I saw post after post of you blaming Tannehill for everything. And it's not just you. There's others posting in regards to Tannehill, who think he's no better than average, and would like is to replace him, with a perfect QB, of course. If there weren't these sort if ridiculous things being said, I wouldn't have posted half the stuff I've posted in the last year. But you're right, I'm probably just seeing posts that aren't there. Everyone is in agreement that Tannehill is borderline top 10, and no one is saying they'd rather have a different QB.
You are missing the point. Its the ridiculosness of "comparisons"...do you see what you did? You hated the fact I compared him with Cutler...but it was perfectly logical to you if we compared him to the games best QB. I want to be optimistic aswell and am actually, but some of this is BAD.
I can have an optimistic approach and still point out things I would like to see him improve on. I dont think Im too hard on him either, he has potential but Im not ok with his ceiling being 2014. And i dont think it is either, but to this point the flaws are there. Just want to see him become great and not nurse his stats with dinks and dunks which could very well be what he is coached to do for all i know.
No, I didn't hate anything. Early in Cutlers career it was fine to compare him to the greats. He looked like he was going places. Then he leveled off. You're trying to compare him to Cutler now. Literally no one is saying that Tannehill is as good as Rodgers. No. One. They are showing that early in careers they were similar, so stop making assertions that Tannehill is no better than average. Ten years from now we might be using Tannehill as the next Jay Cutler. We might not. But, I think comparing to Rodgers early career is not a bad comparison. We know how Cutler ended, which is why you used him, because you show an alternate path, but it is really missing the point of the initial comparison. It's comparing potential, although that potential can change, if Tannehill plateaus soon.
Both comparisons hold about the same amount of water, one is just optimistic and one is pessimistic, people need/want reasons to believe and I get that I suppose.
He had a ton of FU I'm throwing this ball into a tight window throws last year and made alot of them. What were you watching?
Haven't missed a snap, if you are hinting he has that gunslinger mentality...lets go ahead and agree to disagree now because that is so far from reality I'm sure to piss you off.
lol, ok. Tangible stats at similar points in their careers mean nothing, but made up silliness about "anger" you're not even qualified to speak on, means everything.
That's subjective. If you go by years in the league its similar. If you go by age, it's not. If you go by years starting it definitely is not. Let's hope and pray Tanny takes a huge leap next year and we have top 5 QB. That would be kinda nice.
were talking freakin football...are we men or boys.. If he improves will you be man enough to give him credit O? I would just like to reiterate for the record, for the hundredth time, this is about championship caliber play from the position, and what things I believe he needs to do to get to that level.. This is year four, I know where the argument lyes..some are projecting that the weaknesses are still evolving and that some of us are not being patient in that process..I'm saying ok, I can see that angle but this is year four, he's 27 years old, and he hasn't shown even glimpses of my main objection to his game.. I don't understand, do you folks want a Qb with dual threat capabilities to just be a pocket passer? because that's what you have at this point. Folks are comparing him to Rogers when they seem to forget that Rogers has elite escapability, understands the element I'm referring to and cuts a defense with it all the time when healthy...Ryan isn't even in the same ballpark..it doesn't even register in his brain, nor do the fans who aren't even understanding its importance..those fans and him are made for each other at this point, he doesn't do it, and they don't care...so sweet...screw that, I say we fly a banner across the stadium, put up a freakin billboard, tweet his ***..whatever just get it. If you have the pocket skills of a Tom Brady or Dan Marino then by all means sit your *** back there and pick them apart, but if you don't, AND you possess athleticism, and yet you still choose to stay in the pocket at an alarming rate, then you ryan tannehill are not reaching your potential. And this is why some of us do what we do, we want all of it, and we want it now..if he gives it to us this year and we see real cognitive responses in this regard, I will show you posts from me that say, " there has never been a qb who has had this road to playing the position, no qb has ever played wide receiver in college at a pretty high level in a big time conference, then switched to qb in that same conference, went hi In the draft and is playing decent football..I've never seen it happen..that's amazing and maybe it requires more patience than the norm, but Im not gonna sit around and heap joy on his development while we continue to miss the playoffs and he continues to not use his full aresenal to help his team convert, gain yardage when protection breaks down, and win ball games by threatening the defense with runs past the LOS..THIS IS ELEMENTARY QB'ing.
I don't need a PHD to realize Aaron Rodgers plays with a fire that burns inside. "Silliness" is getting your little shmeckl hard because he had similar college stats.
Rhetorical of course, and I know you knew that... Lot of folks just see the offense as one entity pulsating as one..I feel that when it comes down to pressure packed championship football, the QB has to have the ability to make plays..subtle quick movement in the pocket, great anticipation, scrambling, running to convert a third down...scrambling and throwing...stick throws, touch under pressure.
He's firmly #10 at the moment IMHO...but I give a little more credit for traditional, pocket-passing ability, than I do ability to run. If his running in 2014 was weighted as heavily as the passing (again, in MY opinion), he'd be 12'ish. I'll agree he needs to pull one down and scamper a good bit more, if he did that, and the rest of his game only slightly improved, he'd be automatic top 5 IMO. I'm just of the opinion he's going to have a breakout year from a throwing standpoint. I'd like to see more runs too Deej...but will it happen? I have my doubts, but I love the kid. Won't kill me if he don't, as long as the stuff he does well continues to improve. EVERYBODY wants an Andrew Luck to come in polished and have a full skill-set...you know how insanely rare that is. If his numbers improve half as much as I hope they will in 2015, I couldn't care less about him running. He's progressing at his rate, in a system he now has 1 year experience in. I think its understated how much last year will contribute to him progressing through this coming camp/pre-season and being ready for the real 16. The team didn't acquire this WR squad this off-season for him to run the ball...that's my take.
Yeah, actual production is stupid, its that "belly fire" that is really awesome. Seriously, thank you. Oh btw, I didn't say you weren't qualified because you didn't have a phd in "playing with anger". I said you weren't qualified because you don't know **** about Aaron Rodgers or Ryan Tannehill for that matter. Especially in regards to their motivations and the oh so really important "inner anger belly fire super power".
dont do that 68, don't give him a pass because he's ours..he has the skills so he needs to understand this element of the game and start doing something about it..period..
If you guys truly believe Tannehill is a top 10 QB with the potential to jump into a top 5 spot, I need to see your rankings because this just sounds crazy to me. Maybe I'm wrong but wow guys, be realistic here.
DJ, I'm with you entirely on Tannehill's pocket movement/use of athleticism except for one thing, I'm not sure how much of that to put on T17 himself so far. On the one hand we've felt frustration when it hasn't been used - it's almost been mystifying - and on the other we've seen a lot of running, and good running from him, at times. It's been my suspicion that two things have been going on. First, the coaches have asked him to sit there and not run, to focus on the pocket passing. Second, he hasn't taken hold of the reins of this offense yet and has been more subject to just following the coaches. Now, whether or not any of this means T17 hasn't got the ability to do it is another question, and then after that comes the questions of if not/why not and can he learn. My guess/hope is that Tannehill has been quite submissive/respectful of his coaches this far and has done what they've asked of him, he's been raw in many areas and so has focused on learning, but that the more he learns the more he applies and the more he wants to apply, and if I'm right, he's going to get more and more uncomfortable doing one thing when he has learned how to be, and worked at being, better. If that's the case, one would hope the coaches see this and give him more and more free reign. So, has T17 demonstrated great pocket presense? No. Has he run as much as might be best? No. Has he shown growth in both areas, I'd say yes. Do I believe he can and will learn - I'm hopeful. Not every person is a 'natural' talent who just gets it and applies it from the outset. There are genuine talents who take some time to process things and get them down but then really start to show up. T17 could be one of those. I hope he is.
Simple...my top 10 (and bear in mind, I give more weight to throwing than I do running/scrambling), in no particular order I put these guys above RT currently: Rodgers, Romo, Brees, Ryan, Rapist, Manning, Rivers, Luck and Marcia.
at some point we have to stop this blaming the coaches stuff for his inability to anticipate pressure and run..hes 27 years old..he needs to show the awareness to do it, because of its impact on the defense, its part of qb'ing.
While true, and I agree to a point, I think year two in Lazor's system will show Ryan run the ZR a little more. You can bet that Lazor see's the big play capability from Ryan, and by revamping the WR Corp to better suit Ryan's game and by these receivers helping the offense to open it up more, teams will be less likely to be keying on Ryan to take off with the ball..this is a win win imho.
Also, I don't remember seeing anything in regards to what I am about to post, but I am glad that we have Ryan and I think this year he will really have a breakout season...We have waited so long between Marino and now. I can tell you why we have waited so long imho and we are making the same mistake now that we have Ryan....We no longer draft & Develop QB's behind our starter. After Marino's 12th year or so we should have started to draft and train possible future QB's for when Marino retired. We should be doing this now as well so we have a young gun in the wings that can learn and develop his game in our offense so if anything were to happen to Ryan, we have our young gun that can come in and not miss a beat. This to me, is very important.
