He puts down some good film here against clemson..

please do me a favor and go strait to 4:45...even though he doesn't make the tackle, its pretty special..

he was doubled the whole game, and still made a very good impact on the game..I didn't see any lack of hustle..

gonna keep watching over and over, his tcu tape was uneventful...really enjoyed his combine performance, this large man moves and runs very naturally with some explosive qualities.

he's impossible to move though, just doesn't budge, never goes backwards and seems to read offense very well... I hope that he realizes that extra weight is no good for his back or balance, so if he dedicates himself to the gym and nutrition he could become really explosive...very few times I've seen a man that size run down the field like at 4:55, that was impressive...gives me hope

for a man that size lower body is built nicely, doesn't carry weight there which gives him the ability to move his feet quickly

The play starts at 4.45. Not trying to nitpick you, but the play at 4.55 is a different one. Anyway, I can't believe he is that fast. That was impressive running by the big man. Maybe it's his size, or perhaps he just has long arms/legs compared to his torso, but he seems to lineup a bit too upright. If he played with better leverage, he's going to be a load. Still is, really.

i mean I didn't want a d tackle with our 2, wasn't even thinking about it, but if this dude gets inspired by suh, were gonna hurt people real bad..

Im gonna say this now, I've looked closely at his body....hes just unfortunate to be born with the spare tire gene..no biggie, the rest of his physique is solid, long, and strong, especially lower body..I would let him drop about 10

hickey said a lot of his production issues was the 3-4 system oklahoma ran.

“That came up a lot and I think it was just the system that I was in,” Phillips said. “You’ll see a lot more plays out of me coming up soon.

“I felt like I was the best pocket presence in this draft as an interior defensive lineman, meaning pocket pressure, pushing the line. I’m a great run stuffer. I’m big and athletic and I can do everything.”

" “I thought I was going to be in Miami the whole time, that’s what I’ve been telling everybody. I’m just happy they gave me the oppotunity and had enough confidence in me to pick me."

He played rb/tight end in high school. Fact is he underachieved big time in Oklahoma. There were times where he would showhis dominance and other times where it seemed like he would take plays off. Its a risk, we will find out what he wants to be in the NFL I guess.

Phillips has a huge upside IMHO as he's got the physical size and measurables, and I don't see Suh putting up with anybody playing alongside him taking a millisecond off.

I don't see superstar material but I do see flashes of Randy Starks' ability to get into the backfield. I also see a big guy who likes to sit back at times. If he's the run stuffer Paul Soliai was, he might get away with some of that in the NFL.

Yes he needs to increase the effort. Yes he needs to get stronger.

Yeah, I'm okay with the pick given the talent on the board in the middle of round 2. You have to be happy coming away with a guy you think can be a real factor and not just another guy in a line that contains Wake and Suh.

We'll see, maximizing strengths is one thing, can over invest in units as well b/c it hurts other units.

MOST the people moaning about the pick won't have seen tape on him. He's a first round talent we got late in the 2nd after trading down. Because he isn't a OG, CB or LB people are moaning, apart from Suh & Mitchell we were lacking a rotation guy who can contribute but now Phillips can come in learn of Mitchell and Suh and ball whilst doing so

From the looks of how things have been with the Dline, Miami likes rotating players. That's why this pick may have been made.

    Makes sense to me.

As long as he doesn't have to play against the TCU center, he should be all right. I don't know anything about the center from TCU, but if he is in the draft this year, the Dolphins should draft him immediately.

I don't know what the big deal is there. Multiple people have insinuated that Phillips got dominated in the TCU game and that's flat out incorrect. If you watch the tape, much more often that not, Phillips is right there in the middle doing his job. The vast majority of TCU's success was based on running outside, undoubtedly to get away from Phillips, or via quick passes to the perimeter to negate Phillips' ability to push up in the pocket which he did on numerous occasions in that game.

So again, when I listen to people cite that TCU game in an overtly negative tone, I hesitate to believe the rest of what they say. That's not an accurate portrayal of what that tape shows. It comes off like they're just repeating what they've heard in an attempt to play to the crowd to try to make Phillips seem like he's going to disappear at the next level.

Then again, it's perfectly alright to say that TCU's center had a good game going against an NFL-caliber prospect. Phillips was definitely the strength of that Oklahoma interior, but if you watch the rest of the guys they aren't nearly as consistent as Phillips. Now, credit to TCU's center who was quick to seal the edge when he got the chance but he didn't physically take Phillips and move him like some are implying.

To make another point, I remember Jake Grove having good games against Vince Wilfork and Kris Jenkins. Sometimes a Center just plays well when given certain tasks. Jake Grove wasn't elite by any stretch, nor would I want him on the Fins yet he neutralized Wilfork and Jenkins during their peak.

What I can say is that if anyone expects to turn on the tape and see Vince Wilfork, they're going to be disappointed. Phillips is not that kind of round-1 prospect. You see that very clearly in the TCU game. He's not a top-10 kind of player that's going to wreck the opposing team's offense.

But for me, that doesn't make any sense. You could use that argument on anyone the Dolphins are going to have a chance to draft this year. Not everyone's going to be an elite prospect, particularly the guys who get selected after round-1 of the draft.

James Walker wasn't too keen on the choice though:

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins hit a home run on the first day of the NFL draft. Everything made sense with the selection of Louisville wide receiverDeVante Parker. He is a dynamic player who filled Miami's biggest need.

But the Dolphins followed that with a risky pick on Day 2. The selection of Oklahoma defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was questionable on many fronts. It was the Dolphins' only selection Friday, but they did make a trade. They moved down five spots in the second round and shipped their sixth-round pick to thePhiladelphia Eagles for the Eagles' second-rounder and two fifth-round picks.

Let's start with this: Miami had 114 million reasons not to use a second-round pick on a defensive tackle. The Dolphins invested $114 million in free agency on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. That made the position no longer a need. Phillips, at best, is a backup next season behind Suh and fellow starterEarl Mitchell. The Dolphins also had promising young reserves Anthony Johnson and A.J. Francis. Phillips will be added into a jumbled mix.

In addition, Phillips comes to the Dolphins with a reputation for underachieving in college and having an inconsistent motor.

Here are some reporting notes on Phillips, according to Scouts Inc.:

    • "Completely unreliable. Can't trust him."
    • "Effort is up-and-down."
    • "Inconsistent effort as a pass-rusher. ... Will hang out at line of scrimmage and give half-hearted effort for a pass breakup."
    • "Keeping weight in check will always be a concern."

Does this sound like a player the Dolphins should count on in the second round?

"You know, that came up a lot," Phillips said of the pre-draft critiques. "I think that was just the system I was in. You will see a lot more plays out of me, coming up soon."
Granted, Jordan is young and can grow out of bad habits with proper coaching. But the Dolphins are entering an important 2015 season for many in the organization and need young players they can immediately trust. On top of that, Phillips didn't fill a need. Miami entered Friday with various holes. The Dolphins needed a middle linebacker, one or two guards and depth at safety. They exited Day 2 without addressing any of those positions.

General manager Dennis Hickey made a case Friday night that the Phillips pick added depth, and that the team simply took the best player on the board. Phillips might eventually prove Hickey correct. But Miami is a .500 team from 2014 and was in need of an immediate impact in the second round at other positions to get over the hump. In that regard, the Dolphins came up short.

Size is a great equalizer in football as it typically exposes an opposing player short on technique or athleticism. I have high hopes for late picks and UDFAs; however, the lesson learned from last season is a fine line between success and failure with light 300lb DT (Starks & Odrick). Two examples of this limitation is how tight the 5 DL formation was and the lack of DB blitzes. Hopefully, the acorns will contribute within the base defense, but when blitzing or trying to free up Wake, players that can occupy multiple blockers are critical.

    Back in Miami
Pretty much sums it up for me.
We were in position for a good LB and Guard prospect where we were in 2.
We trade out and end up getting a depth player with all the needs.
Maybe it works out but real head scratcher from the outside looking in.

    man thats interesting..

hes a young payer football wise..

. ''I just couldn’t take it anymore so I had to get it done.''

yes he had surgery, he was on the verge of becoming a star 4 games into that season, then after dealing with it the past few years had to get it done..''

he's been hush hush on the diagnosis, thought it was a career ender.

    but then..
''Jordan seems extremely confident in returning.
Is telling folks that he feels better than he did in HS. Surgery
seems to be a complete success.''

a man that size, being freed by chronic backpain...maybe thats why he wasn't pushing it, maybe thats why he took a few pays off, idk, but he did play all 13 games last year..still scares me, he's got to be doing everything in the book to keep that back strong, I mean I would buy a med x lumbar machine just for him..

I want Kong to call him and take him out to dinner...he sure seems humble enough to listen and follow.

''Shipp hasn’t outlawed dunking, but that could be next. Phillips is maybe the only OU defensive lineman able to throw down a two-handed jam. Despite weighing well over 300 pounds, Phillips, who averaged a double-double his final two seasons of high school, is also one of the best basketball players on the football team.
Oklahoma defensive tackle Jordan Phillips amazes his teammates almost daily.''

this is the general consensus you get when researching his athletic history.

watching some high school reps..holy sh^%...this dude was a planet theory prospect, could easily play tight end and none would be able to tackle him, he was 285, lean, strong and fast man....

The advanced stats: College Football Focus last year gave Phillips the nation's fifth-best run-stop percentage grade (9.0) against Power 5 teams.
after coming off back surgery, and has only 17 college games...hi hi ceiling..

''On the Hoof: Tremendous length and overall body structure. Phillips possesses wide shoulders, long arms and huge hands. He has just a tad of bad midsection body weight.
Needs Improvement: Phillips needs to play hard on every snap. He is so athletically superior to his competition that he seems bored at times.
Most Impressive: His overall athleticism is off the charts for his size. It is not crazy to believe he could actually play tight end at the next level. Phillips is also very quick off the ball and could actually project as a giant strongside defensive end.
    ...rivals.''

    35 inch hands.

I love the fact that he's an athletic freak, this is why you pay Kong all that money, to motivate the youngsters and set the example for the them

The back issue scares the hell out of me. Especially at a position where back injuries have ended so many careers.

While I'm still not a fan of the Phillips pick it is funny how people always wanted us to draft BPA and now that we did people hate it and want us to fill a need instead.

Another interesting point is the fact that only 2 players that will be drafted in the top 6-7 rounds weighed more than Phillips. Those two players were already drafted when we took Phillips, they were Danny Shelton and Eddie Goldman. The only true NT left was Dion Simon out of Northwestern State and he was 6'4 and about 325 to 330. So we did get a unique player in that regard.

so far this is the only pick i like. Phillips is taking a chance at an impact player and I believe that is how you should draft every round. It isnt the pick I wouldve made with who was available but I'm ok with it. Better than a receiver who cant get seperation or a Guard with no strength

Take a chill pill DolphinGreg. I didn't say it was a bad pick or that Phillips wouldn't be a good player for the Dolphins. All I said was I would pick the center for TCU if he is availiable in the draft. A complement for one player doesn't mean another player is a bad player.
