To me it makes more sense to exercise the option on Tannehill than sign him to a new contract at this time. This gives them another season to see if he continues to show improvement or if he simply plateaus at the QB position.

If he has a great season, it might cost them more money in the future but top tier QB's deserve to get paid a lot of money. If on the otherhand he doesn't improve over his play in 2014, Tannebaum, Hickey, and the next head coach will have time to decide if Tannehill is the long term answer or not.

Good.. I don't want them tied to him until he shows something. Not even Luck got an extension so Tannehill deserves it even less.

I think Tannehill has shown a lot more than "something".

It is guaranteed for injury. So if Bob were to get hurt (as is his custom), they could still be on the hook for it even if he sucks all year up until that point.

With RT17, I'm happy that it's officially done and hopefully they can move towards a long term deal after the draft.

lol... 4000 yards, 27 TDs, and 12 INTs don't carry the weight they used to since all the Brady rules went into place.

Tannehill will have to overcome bad coaching and poor surrounding cast play, then match or surpass those numbers consistently before more people will start to buy into him; and for some, it'll be nothing but playoff success or even a SB.

The team hasn't made the playoffs...and naturally it's ALL Tannehill's fault...even considering how many of the RT detractors also claim Philbin causes losses...the defensive slide...and the O line.

Tanny is supposed to do ALL of their jobs, or he's a bust.

I'm not on that train. But, it would be nice to see him come through in crucial games at the end of the season when the playoffs are on the line, don't ya think? He will surely be tested this year with our last 2 games against Andrew Luck and Tom Brady respectively...

Would be just as nice for the D to hold a lead, when the offense scores 36 AT Denver.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Our defense sh!t the bed the last half of the season. But, Tannehill is not criticism free here either. He played poorly against two weak *** opponents the last 2 games last season when the playoffs were on the line. It was down right pathetic...

Tannehill certainly isn't a bust, but I for one am not convinced he is the QB to take this team to the next level. He has proved he is good enough to lead this team to mediocre records year after year. Now after three years as a starter in the league he needs to take his game to a higher level.

Obviously no one expects him to win a SB without better overall talent around him. But the talent is certainly better now then it was when he was a rookie and he needs to show he can put this team on his back and win some of those late fourth quarter games the team has lost in the past three years.

Tannehill also needs to show up in games where the opposing team has was is suppose to be an inferior starting QB. The fact the Jets QB clearly outplayed him the last two times the teams played in Miami remains a concern to me.

I have said all along Tannehill is probably the best QB the Dolphins have had since Marino. Yet He still needs to prove he is capable of actually leading this team to the playoffs before I will be convinced he is the long term answer at the QB position.

For three years he has been given excuse after excuse as to why this team has remained mediocre. Excuse time is now over and it is time for him to show he has what it takes to lead this team into the playoffs.

As I've been saying, Tannehill has improved each and every year. Are there more things to improve upon? Sure, but I think he's more than good enough to make a run with. The job is to surround him with pieces to HELP him do that. Both offensively and defensively.

After this season he'll get a ridiculous long term deal. I have no doubt he'll continue his upward trend. Especially with the crap he's had around him.

The he way I look at it is if Luck or Wilson had been the QB the past three years, the Dolphins would have already made the playoffs. The Dolphins have not had the talent to be a SB team over the past three years but a top tier QB could have led them to more wins than Tannehill has.

Tannehill is is an average QB right now and average QB's just aren't the type of QB's who can get their teams to the SB in this day and age of the NFL.

To me it is all about having a SB caliber QB. Anything less leaves you with a team which might be good enough to be a wildcard team who loses in the first round of the playoffs, but never better than that.

Perhaps Tannehill will take a giant step up this coming season and show he can become a top tier QB. Until he shows this ability, I just continue to have my doubts.

I wish I was as convinced about Tannehill as some individuals on here appear to be, but I'm just not.

We have to remember that we're living in a world were the media driven sound bites rule and a "franchise" QB can overcome 21 other bad starters on the team to "lead" his team to the playoffs and Super Bowl. Clearly they do it all themselves and should get all the credit and blame!

I disagree. If we had taken another position in round one and drafted Wilson in round 2 (which I was in favor of, though I liked RT17 as well), I think that Wilson would be looked at no better, and probably worse, than Tannehill is. Russell Wilson has played well and makes smart decesions. I like him. But a lot of the credit that he gets is for his team's success, which is in large part due to a dominant defense and a good running game - both much better than Miami has had. The notion that if you were to have Tannehill and Wilson trade places and suddenly Miami is a top notch team is bunk.

And is a good reason why when the time comes it will be :

    1. Pay Tannehill less because he "should take one for the team"
    2. Franchise him or let him walk

If he calls their bluff, if exercised, the hierarchy will have its work cut out for them. As I have been saying all along, we will have issues in the near future with the cap. Maybe not this year, but 2016 and beyond will def be a challange

There are pros and cons to it for both parties. I'm a fan of Tannehill, so I'd love to see him light it up this year and earn that big contract. Good for him, good for the team (even if they have to pay more for his services, and good for us fans.

I don't like the decision. If Tannehill takes another step forward like he has every year and the team does make the playoffs then they gonna have to give him a load of money. Tannehill could realistically get 4,200 yards and 30 TDs. Luck is different. Everyone knows he will get big money. So it doesn't really matter if they sign him to an extension now or next offseason. And actually picking up Luck's option will cost less money for them this season than signing him to the big extension they are going to give him. Luck will be one of the highest paid players in the league.

Are you referring to last season, or the season before? Because Tannehill didn't play poorly his last two games of last season. He played pretty awesome against Minn, with 359 yards, and 4tds 1 int, and then he had 259 yards, with 1td and 0 int with an 87 rating against the Jets.

Seattle is the perfect fit for Wilson. The defense and running game. Their offense also having him run the ball some. Imagine him being in Miami where they asked him to be a strictly pocket passer? Sometimes they don't even ask him to do much. Seattle last season was 27th in the league in passing yards per game but 1st in running yards per game. With the offensive line and lack of running game the Dolphins have had here if Wilson were a Dolphin he would have already been a bust. Not to mention the Dolphins defense giving up points. It wouldn't be in Seattle where only 17-21 points can win you most games. This team would be worse with Wilson and without a doubt wouldn't have made the playoffs with him either.

Again, I really feel that people neglected to factor in Tannehill's overall experience as we've gone through these first three years. NO ONE should have expected Tannehill to be leading crap teams to the playoffs in his first couple seasons. For the last 2/3rds of last season, Tannehill was playing at an elite level. His defense was abominable. Not sure how Geno Smith tearing our defense apart is a negative on Tannehill. Our defense just couldn't stop him, or the run.

I was actually thinking recently that I wouldn't mind a few more picks if he is taking more chances getting the ball down the field. The other side of this coin is that I would also expect more deep balls, greater YPA and more TD's

Until Ryan can lead this offense to 28 ppg he is part of the problem. We didnt draft him 7th overall to throw screens and comebacks all day. Needs to be more of a playmaker.

Why 28? Why not 31? 35? I mean, Tannehill lead the Dolphins offense to 388 points this year, which is like 24ppg, the most since Marino in '84.

And we drafted him based on his potential. Potential has to be developed. He's developed nicely for 3 consecutive seasons, which some people can't seem to understand.

Here are the teams to average 28ppg or better:

    Green Bay
    Denver
    Philadelphia
    New England
    Dallas
    Indianapolis

So, Tannehill didn't lead to as many points as 4 teams who are lead by veteran Pro-Bowl quarterbacks, and one team with the best QB prospect to come out since Peyton Manning? OH NOE!!! BTW, Seattle only averaged .3ppg better than Miami. So, take that for what it's worth.

Why is there this mentality with fans that the QB is the only factor to things like points per game or even the offense as a whole?? Other players? Coaches? does ANYTHING ELSE aside from QB contribute to Offense? WTF.
